Whatever is going on right now in #Russia, I do note this: #Twitter is now useless at tracking this. Junk accounts everywhere, no verified accounts, swarms of sketchy bluechecks.
The ONE thing that place was good at was breaking global news. But not now.
Yup. I just came from there (NYT). However, neither #Twitter nor #Facebook ever did substitute as news sources for me. I’m a #newspaper#subscriber all the way down.
#Kansas' top law enforcement agency will now lead the criminal investigation that led police in the city of #Marion to #raid a local #newspaper last Friday.
"Corporate journalism both failed to respond adequately to the GOP’s attacks on the press over the years and to recognize that scrutinizing policing would bring the same kind of authoritarian backlash.

"The fall of local #journalism has been precipitous — a source of heartbreak and concern for many. I’ve spent two years photographing newspaper offices across my home state of Kansas. In #Marion, these concerns — about community, division, #democracy and #FirstAmendment rights — have collided." #GiftArticle https://wapo.st/45c7Jk4
“I'm doing this because I believe that newspapers still have a place in the world and that the worst thing that a newspaper could do was shrink its reporting staff, stop reporting, fill itself with non-news when there's still #news out there.”
A small #newspaper was investigating the chief of #police. They it was raided by the police.
Whew! NYTimes charging $60 for 4 weeks for paper delivery. Switching over to my local library (which has free, online access to a lot of papers... hooray!) I like (real) paper, but not at that cost. I do need more #newspaper for the animals cages, though, but at a more affordable rate. (Recently re-subscribed to the LA Times, however).

“An attack on a newspaper office through an illegal search is not just an infringement on the rights of journalists but an assault on the very foundation of democracy and the public’s right to know,” Bradbury said. “This cannot be allowed to stand.”
Hungary, 1976. Nothing nicer than reading the morning newspaper on a warm day. It's weird though how the over-the-top-of-the-glasses look always seems to appear like an admonishment of some sort!

Marion County attorney withdraws search warrant against Kansas newspaper; returns items - County attorney sites 'insufficient evidence' for search, seizure (KHSB 41 Kansas City)
From the Marion County attorney (full text at KSN.com):
"On Monday, August 14, 2023, I reviewed in detail the warrant applications made Friday, August 11, 2023 to search various locations in Marion County including the office of the Marion County Record... I have come to the conclusion that insufficient evidence exists to establish a legally sufficient nexus between this alleged crime and the places searched and the items seized. I have asked local law enforcement to return the material seized to the owners of the property."
This offer for the digital edition of the Toronto Star looks pretty good. Only $2 per month for 2 months -- then $19.99 per month for the rest of the year. Much cheaper than the $4 per paper issue.
The paper does a fair bit of investigative #journalism, so it's worth supporting to help keep investigative journalism alive (the #journalists can't do it for free, plus they need the legal protection a large newspaper can provide).
I have to infer that the #Bezos#newspaper, #WashingtonPost, is getting out ahead of a truly terrible story about #GoodReads ... Corrupt reviews and bullying are a bad enough story to kill the platform, but still -- Reading this piece, I feel like there's something worse wriggling under the covers about to come crawling out. (Paywalled.)
