So now guess what? Elon's space junk is screwing up radio astronomy too.

New Radio Astronomical Observations Confirm Unintended Electromagnetic Radiation Emanating from Large Satellite Constellations >>> https://cps.iau.org/news/new-radio-astronomical-observations-confirm-unintended-electromagnetic-radiation-emanating-from-large-satellite-constellations/

Anybody surprised?

And the plan is to let him launch 30,000 of these monstrosities!

I recently got quite some flak for discussing what #Starlink satellites burning up in the atmosphere after their planned lifetime of 6 years could do to the stratosphere. Adding tons of aluminium and other elements as fine aerosol particles. Well. New research has just been published:

A mixture between fascinating and disturbing. Live animation of satellites in orbit. You can zoom in and check activated coverage too. https://satellitemap.space/?constellation=starlink

launch at 9:09pm PDT. Err. I mean, -- AFB. More satellites (meaning either better Internet or more junk flying around blocking your view of space, depending on who you are). These were more enjoyable before the dude running that company revealed his true nature.

Elon Musk is a sorry shit, but I’m kinda grateful to him for reminding everyone that critical infrastructure has to be managed by states rather than private companies.

While we are talking about Musk and Starlink, let's discuss the Kessler Syndrome.

Some evening not too long from now you may look up, and instead of the stars and a few Starlink satellite trains marching along, you might see a night sky filled with brilliant sparkles. You check the news and learn the International Space Station has been destroyed as well humanity's weather and other Earth observation satellites. What's happened?

Good piece in the NY Times about Elon Musk’s but it only lightly mentions WHY he is in this dominant position - is the only one reliably launching rockets at scale into right now!

  • United Launch Alliance’s (ULA) Vulcan Centaur is repeatedly delayed
  • Arianespace’s Ariane 6 has been delayed for years now

Neither may first launch until 2024, & then they have to grow to launch at the scale needed.

War ja schon immer eine große Frage, ob die Zielgruppe für #Starlink (geschweige denn die angekündigten Konkurrenten) überhaupt groß genug ist. Zweifel sind erlaubt.
Was meint ihr?

Der mit Starlink generierte #Umsatz hat laut einem Zeitungsbericht die Milliardenmarke überschritten. Laut SpaceX sollte der aber schon zehnmal so hoch sein.

plan to launch tens of thousands of new satellites. Experts are working hard to ensure this doesn't lead to a disaster that ends human access to orbit.

by Dave Mosher, Dec 27, 2019

", , , and reportedly even plan to collectively launch tens of thousands of internet-beaming over the next decade.

"SpaceX, founded by , has the most ambitious plans with approval from the US government to launch nearly 12,000 of its satellites — though it's seeking permission to launch a total of 42,000.

"Though Musk said Starlink satellites have collision-avoidance systems, one came relatively close to smashing into a European satellite in September [2019].

"The likelihood of satellite collisions and dangerous space debris will go up as more spacecraft are launched. Militaries that destroy satellites during tests or wars will make the problem even worse.

"Experts worry that debris orbiting Earth could lead to a '' domino effect that cuts off human access to for hundreds or even thousands of years."
