These Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) and Very Large Online Search Engines (VLOSEs) impact our lives greatly.
That is why we have designated 17 VLOPs and 2 VLOSEs to meet the full range of new obligations under our Digital Services Act (#DSA) within four months.
This will empower users, protect minors, reduce disinformation and increase #transparency.

Clarence Thomas Acknowledges Undisclosed #RealEstate Deal With Harlan Crow and Discloses Private Jet Flights
The new filing comes after ProPublica’s reporting on the #SupremeCourt justice’s beneficial relationship with the billionaire GOP megadonor. Thomas also reported three private jet trips provided by Crow.
Because these posts scroll away, I have posted something on DataBreaches.net about the discrepancies between what Raptor Technologies has told school districts and WIRED and what we know about the incident -- and what we don't know yet:
📢 Happy New Year, happy my birthday, and happy time for another #TekSavvyquarterly transparency report.
TekSavvy is the only ISP in #Canada (AFAIK) to publish a quarterly Transparency Report documenting the requests we got from law enforcement agencies, how we handled them, and what we disclosed to them.
Today, we’re reporting on Q2 of 2023, and I’m summarizing that report here. 🧵👇🏼
The other day, a list of the "most broken" local authorities in #Scotland was released, and garnered much media coverage (eg the #Herald report below). It's reported that it was compiled by "the New Britain Project as part of their Broken Britain study, and released today to coincide with the Scottish Goverment's budget". Those of you who followed my on #Twitter might recall that I have a bee in my bonnet about the #transparency of think tanks/... https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/23998545.north-lanarkshire-broken-council-area-scotland/
My latest column in this week's Common Weal newsletter is a long one but possibly the most important I've written.

Judge Rules Texas DPS Must Release Withheld Documents Related to the Uvalde School Shooting
The ruling marks the first step toward disclosing the extensive collection of police documents, though the state agency could choose to fight the ruling by appealing the decision.
The #UPC is not a very transparent system. Party submissions are not automatically publicly available - they have to be requested. The first two such requests have been rejected. It seems that a real interest in access by the requester needs to be demonstrated. This is a huge shame (albeit that this does appear to be what the current rules of procedure envisage)
#Virginia Law Allows the Papers of #University Presidents to Stay Secret, Limiting Public Oversight
A provision in state law exempts college presidents’ “working papers and correspondence” from disclosure even after they step down — as we found out when we asked about one ex-president’s role in campus expansions that uprooted a Black neighborhood.
"I think we’re seeing glimpses of interest because some members in the GOP are tired of the way a few big money donors play politics. But that doesn’t mean they actually have the courage to take the issue on."
Whenever you’re on the Internet, your ISP may collect information about you, even if it’s just the IP addresses you are assigned.

Hands up if you think public EU money being awarded by @NGIZero / @fsfe should be subject to a transparent process where we can see all internal discussions/comments/reasoning concerning funding decisions including who made them.
