Hi, fedi folks. I have decided to stop donating to mastodon.online, which I no longer use, and contribute to the firefish project. I do not use the firefish.social server, but @kainoa, they still needs an ongoing funding source for their continued efforts. Sometimes, I criticize capitalism but don't want to be just a cheapskate. I want to create a society that rewards those who make great systems. #firefish#calckey#selfhosting#donatenow
My #pixelfed posts doesn’t show up in my #calckey account. My #bookwyrm posts doesn’t show up anywhere. I tried #gotosocial and it only gets posts from about half the accounts it follows.
It is hard to advocate a federated network when it doesn’t. #Fediverse
I wonder if it's not the difficulty or features that keep some people from joining the #fediverse, I wonder if most people are shy about making overt political commitments.
Because to be sure, using #Mastodon or #Firefish is a defiant and overt political act. It says a lot about what a person thinks is important, and what they are willing to be inconvenienced by in order for us all to achieve something as a society.
Speculation: Once a political statement has been made though, it's probably more damaging socially or psychologically to abandon it. Leading people to be shy of politically progressive acts that might fail to get to critical mass.
I don't know about #Firefish, #Calckey and #Misskey being inconveniencing. Maybe - if user considers most of its features a bloat and they have to put up with this anyway because of the #PeerPressure ("Don't sit on #Mastodon and #Pleroma, they don't even have essentials!") - then it must be inconveniencing. But I'd say it describes the same trap a lot of mainstream "Everything" platforms get into pretty well. It's barely a position to be in terms with such sites, IMO - yes, they are less of a detriment than Instagram Reels, but it doesn't send a message.
Political enthusiasts will find their way on the various platforms, no matter how obscure. And this in itself is the message.
Question about Mastodon: I've heard about these other apps that people use mastodon with? Ivory? Calckey? A bunch of others? Do I have that right? I only use Mastodon on my laptop because having it on the phone is too much. Is there an app you think I should be using here to find friends and maybe get my music out there more? Am I even asking the right questions? #mastodon#app#ivory#calckey
Hello #fediverse! I've migrated from evil.social to this comfy #Touhou-themed #Misskey instance at makai.chaotic.ninja, so if your instance hasn't notified you yet of my new fedi account, please follow this account and boost/renote for more visibility! :)
You can still keep following my old one if you want, but note that I won't be using it anymore (it's practically a redirect now).
My time in evil.social was short, but I enjoyed it. Thanks to the admin of evil.social for keeping the instance alive, and best wishes to your #Calckey/#Firefish (I still find the rebranding weird lol) instance But Makai really is the home of this evil spirit. ;)
Someone wonders why Nazis populate a Christian website.
I post the snopes link to Hitler declaring Nazism a Christian movement in 1928 to explain the appeal (for other users who are unaware)
Said OP acts like 1) I should know their Geneaology & that they are descended from Holocaust survivors (its not in their profile) and 2) as per #1, I deliberately affronted them with the Hitler quote.
@hannu_ikonen
For a moment in november-ish I thought I was against quote-toots. Having had quote toots for ages on #firefish / #calckey it's not the feature, it's the users. Quote is useful sometimes, used considerately it's a good tool.
@kainoa 's suggestion to export and re-import my #CalcKey#firefish settings didn't work. My @pseudonym account still won't load home time line.
So I'm creating a brand new @pseudonym2 account.
If you see a follow from me there, feel free to follow me back. I'll work on getting the avatar and such back up, and perhaps there will be a way to set up an auto redirect between accounts.
At least this time reimporting posts shouldn't spam my followers, I hope.
I need any resources, guides, HOWTOs, man pages, codices, papyrus scrolls, clay tablets, and anything else you might have, by yourself or others, on the topic of running a Fediverse instance.
People using #calckey aka #firefish. What mobile client are you all using? I'm trying out a firefish account and I like a lot of what I see. But I'm sorely missing a good Android client (like #tusky). I'm trying out #milktea , which is ok, but not in the league of @Tusky for sure.
Any suggestions?
What is the finest granularity at which a #Mastodon admin can operate? My understanding from the docs is that it's the user, as opposed to #MissKey/#CalcKey/#FireFish that have admin filtering actions that can operate at the single post level. Is that correct? #askFedi
It's interesting sitting here on an old version of #Calckey seeing someone on #Mastodon server telling their fellow user that posting to unlisted will opt-out of #search when I can see Unlisted posts in my antennas quite easily though I believe this has been rightly rectified in the newest versions of [#Firefish / #Iceshrimp but need to confirm]. Being hidden from the Explore tab on Mastodon is not the same as being unsearchable across the fediverse. Frankly, there's little understanding even among admins across the #fediverse about what's a Mastodon / Mastodon API function that is federated to other Mastodon servers but doesn't translate well outside of Mastodon on other #ActivityPub connected platforms like #Misskey and it's forks, #Hubzilla and #Friendica, or rapidly growing platforms like #Lemmy and #Kbin. Kbin also scrapes posts from across the fediverse and puts them into its own magazines.
Unfortunately simple, up-to-date documentation doesn't really exist to explain the realities of federation vs what your admin said was the reality. AP was not built with privacy in mind, and 'security through obscurity' was mostly a Mastodon thing from when folks thought either the Mastoverse was almost the dark web, or the whole fediverse [which has never been the case], and Google et al weren't interested in scraping it.
Unfortunately we have a cadre of devs across all fedi platforms who'll give glowing lip-service to both the fedi and ActivityPub histories of being built by queer or other minority identities but still won't work on giving folks the granular #privacy and #safety controls that weren't included in those protocols, and whose feature roadmaps now just look like bird site 2.0 funded by the milquetoast liberals in political tech who provide their seed money.
Beyond Mastodon and GoToSocial, every other fediverse project treats posting to public as opting in to search and indexing. Indeed, this is pretty much how the ActivityPub protocol handles such too.
Does anybody knows how I could reuse a username that was deleted on #Firefish ? I assume I would have to go by the DB but don’t really know which what to do :neofox_confused:

#akoma and a plethiora more of them… you can have all the features here, which are you missing on mastodon… but people love to complain about missing features than trying another software… #mastodonisnotthefediverse
Just took another look at #Firefish, which used to be #Calckey, and it looks like the #accessibility has gotten much better since the last time I looked. I think I'm going to create a new account there and play with it a little bit. I can't handle too many accounts though, so if I like it, I may move over there. #a11y#blind#fediverse
@mj
Seitdem Mastodon.
If you’ve heard that people have problems with the head of mastodon (gargron) this recent little incident might be an example. (github.com)
