So is really all that?

Just discovered that when people write markdown on Mastodon, it gets rendered as such on

Here's an example:

https://mastodon.laurenweinstein.org/@lauren/110305793358452322

@lauren wrote a post with a title that was encased in four asterisks (*)

In Calckey, the title became animated -- making the whole post seem that much more scary.

If you want to see a live demo of how this appears in Calckey, check it out here:

Just realized that I'm working on a lot of Fediverse projects:

  1. , a federated audio/video P2P streaming server

  2. , a fully-managed Fediverse hosting service

  3. An "unnamed" federated crowdfunding platform

  4. An "unnamed" onboarding platform for the Fediverse

  5. A local Fediverse server, vancity.social, 's home on the Fediverse

  6. A general server, calckey.social

  7. An art server, calckey.art

  8. Testing of various clients and platforms...

OK, so I took the leap and spun up my own instance.

I was deliberating whether to go with or .

Calckey won.

Why?

Because the Mastodon install was "follow these quick 45 steps in a Terminal".

Which breaks at step 44.
(I am not interested in advice as to how to resolve this, thanks.)

Calckey was "run this one script and answer a couple of questions"

Right now, it's just me, all on my lonesome.

I might open it later but at the moment I'm enjoying my own company.

I would appreciate boost to help with federation tho.

Have a great day everyone.

is testing out post imports from Mastodon.

Which means that if you're migrating your Mastodon account to Calckey, you can take your posts with you.

While Mastodon post imports are currently in beta, it's available on calckey.social.

To access it, go to Settings > Export/Import Data.

See screenshot.

One of the interesting things I've seen on the fediverse:

blahaj.zone run both a and instance under the same domain/community. (I learnt this by running into @ada on lemmy, who is also @ada on calckey)

See:
https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/
https://blahaj.zone/

I don't know how effective it is in practice, but it sure seems like a great way to foster more diversity and richness in the fediverse experience, especially if some integrations can be built, like mutual ids.

Waiting for the next version of to be released! Looks really good. If more mobile apps come with support, I think it’ll be a serious competitor to Mastodon and many people who bailed in the early days of the twitter migration would probably find it a better fit.

I've been doing some testing tonight with the Calckey software, as their flagship instance has reported that we've not been taking action on reports they've been sending us, however no such reports ever made it to us.

As far as I can currently tell, reports can indeed be remotely reported to us from a Calckey instance, and while they look a bit different on our end, they are still coming through and things we can do something about.

Push now available for users using the .
If you update to iOS 16.4 and "add to home screen", that version (called a PWA) will have full notifications and background/offline support!

For those with the PWA already added, you may need to go into Settings> Notifications> and enable push notifications.

Yay !

Enfin bref...

Do you think instance administrators should contact each other before making any decisions like defederation or suspension of a user account ?

atomicpoet, to fediverse

After developing social media software for 15 years, a lesson I continue to learn is that it’s not developers who decide what the killer feature of an app is.

That decision is made by people who use the software every day.

Take . When I started working with @kainoa, I definitely saw the potential in it., and I appreciated MFM. But nothing could have prepared me for the sheer creativity that would be unlocked.

Now for any social media app to gain traction, it’s not enough to be “me too”. You need that critical feature that draws people in.

I suspect that MFM animations is what will draw people over to Calckey (and other *key apps).

And by the way, I’d you’re on , you might want to click on the post I’m quoting—prepare to be astonished!

Heyah, / hivemind. Does anyone know how the / of stands right now? Its features look promising and I'm becoming interested as I read more, but I'd rather not jump into a place where there's not good accessibility and yet either from the web UI or from third-party apps. Any and all thoughts welcome. Thanks.

According to @mastodonusercount, there are now 12 million accounts.

This is good news for the growth of the , but there's a caveat.

Other than on mastodon.social, Mastodon sign-ups are slowing down. In my own estimation, the majority of Mastodon servers aren't experiencing any growth -- and many are losing users too.

At one point, https://joinmastodon.org was critical for driving sign-ups amongst many Mastodon servers. But from what numerous admins tell me, sign-ups from there have slowed to a trickle.

With https://home.social closing down soon, I fear this is a harbinger for more big server shutdowns. That is, unless something is done.

However, Mastodon isn't the entirety of the story.

It looks like *key apps are spurring more user adoption.

is now the 2nd most used Fediverse software after Mastodon.

And within a month, has nearly doubled in size -- despite the flagship server (which I admin) overcoming a few key challenges.

Of course, the arrival of will change everything. How? I don't entirely know.

But now with 12 million Mastodon accounts, it's time for the next chapter of the Fediverse.

damon, to random

In short oder the Fediverse is about to experience massive change and growth. is growing quickly and about to undergo a metamorphosis. Mozilla will be opening up a Mastodon instance and Barcelona will be joining the Fediverse in a month or so. There is a big shift happening irrespective to those that aren't ready nor willing to accept it.

Usually, I'm the one explaining the to other people, but this time I'm a little confused.

Do I need to create an account to use or can I do it from my or account? I see you can follow communities, but can I interact with them the same way as I can with a Lemmy account?

(now, I guess it's better to create an account anyway if I don't want all the posts from all communities I follow to show up on my Mastodon/Calckey feed)

Die Zahl der Twitter-Alternativen wächst und wächst. Während die meisten das Vorbild ziemlich stark nachbauen, gibt es aber auch Versuche, weiterzudenken.
