It struck me today that #capitalism is something we have to survive. Because if we don't work and spend most of our waking time making money to put food on the table, we will be on the street and die.
Whereas #climate is the other big one we have to survive. But most of us spend virtually zero of our time and energy on the problem, largely because the levers of power to the solutions are not within our reach.
I think this is right. Capitalism reinforces a kind of feudal system in which those with capital do nothing and provide little service but rent-taking while everyone else toils in the conceptual fields dreaming of one day being a capitalist.
Few are empowered to do what is their gift but are rather told that markets will determine if anything they might do is of value. The system beats hope out of most, constantly churning jobs so it's hard to feel valued.
Most of us are too busy scrambling to make money for food or rent to stop and care about a planet the capitalists are content to let fall to ruin.
Democracy could and should be a counterbalance, distributing power not by wealth but by the notion that each person has intrinsic value. But we have let the capitalists gain control of what should be that counterbalance and they systematically disable any attempts to hold them in check.
We have given wealth a voice where it needed none. Money already speaks. It needs no voice at all in government. Democracy was supposed to be the rebuttal to wealth, not mere amplification of it.
New: "Sources tell ABC News that Meadows answered questions on both Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election and Trump's theft and concealment of national defense documents."
We all know Meadows is a criminal who was working to end democracy, end America. Mark Meadows a dirty seditious fascist republican. Death penalty for Meadows! Or there is no justice.
"In the US, supposedly a democracy where the decisions are ultimately made by “We the People,” we hear about the “public sector” and the “private sector” of our economy. What we call “the private sector” is really just the government “contracting out” the functions of managing society. Corporations are those contracts."
So even with these optimistic assumptions, I can't quite get to my destination, and there are no chargers between here and there.
So... even with an expensive EV, it can't do this trip. I doubt a cheaper EV would be any better.
The Canadian prairies are sparsely populated. It may never be practical to have everyone using EVs, no matter how much the #government wants to force it.
Welp, my extended vacation time has come to an end. It's been a fun couple of months, but today, I'm stoked to start at #CISA, aka the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. I'm very much looking forward to US #government service work.
While I've spent pretty much all of my career involved in #opensource, #public work in #cybersecurity, it's always been under the aegis of corporate sponsorship, so there was always some tension between giving away my work for free versus quarter over quarter earnings and profits and all that.
Now, I'm really leaning into living that #socialist lifestyle and taking a break from capitalism -- let's see how this #publicsector life goes!
CISA is a very, very young bureaucracy; it was founded in 2018, so we're just now figuring out how this whole "America's Cyber Defense" business works, and I'm excited to be a part of that.
Unfortunately, although I'm now a government official, I can't fix your parking tickets or get you out of jury duty. Please stop asking.
Daily podcast: Millions of home computers, entire governments and so many supply chain breaches I think I lost count. This week in data breaches is why we can't have nice things.
This is a request to all FOSS projects who only use matrix for communicating with the community.
Please consider bridging your rooms with IRC or XMPP.
India has banned Element, the most widely used Matrix client. I know it's just a client, but to be safe it's wiser to stay away from matrix for a while. So please help us in this regard.
Every spring, there are floods somewhere in North America. Maybe the Red River that flows up through North Dakota to Winnipeg and beyond. Maybe the winter snowpack is heavy and melts quickly in the Rockies, flooding out parts of B.C. Maybe torrential rains in Atlantic areas cause overland flooding throughout Quebec.
Ransomware operator Ragnar Locker have claimed responsibility for an attack against #Australian company from #queensland, Universal Cranes Pty Ltd. However the incident appears to be more widespread, involving all companies of the Smithbridge Group, including Universal Cranes Pty Ltd.
On May 18th the Smithbridge Group did acknowledge and post notice of a Cyber Security Incident, advising that:
“Smithbridge has been impacted by a cyber incident that has resulted in unauthorised access to our systems. This has impacted records held in our systems. It does appear that our data has been impacted. This may include personal information. The security and safety of all affected individuals is our number one priority.” The business also confirmed they had engaged the help of cyber incident responders and notified the OAIC, OPC and the Australian Cyber Security Centre.
The newest development is yesterday, 28th May, the criminals posted on their blog, screenshots accompanied by claims that they’d stolen 239 GB of data and have publicly published it on their darkweb blog site. The criminals say that Universal Cranes Pty Ltd refused to cooperate with them, conduct which is in line with Australian #Government recommendations, and so their data has been posted in retaliation.
It’s likely that now, since the data has been published more updates will be on their way.
If you're concerned or affected by this development Universal Cranes have provided advice and their contact details for further assistance:
The solution to hacks of the #Navy & other sensitive #government or business applications is to use nonstandard industrial computer systems with operating systems not intended for general use & for the platforms to avoid #Intel CPUs if possible. Add encryption & stir.
I wrote code to boot a supercomputer on one.
Our government is in bed with big corporations which should have nothing to do with our defense. It confuses size with safety. They're big by cutting corners & selling crap.
