How NASA gets a turkey to space for holiday meals.

Eater reports: "It’s not just the challenge of creating food that will survive the journey, but all sorts of logistical issues unique to dining in a state of near weightlessness."

🚫🎄!

Not into this holiday because it's not your faith or you are alone? Please share ideas of things we can do to make it a better day and something we can improve on next year, if not today..

Other ideas/feedback needed, please!

Here we go..

.. Virtual truth or dare games (apply ethics, practice safety without identifying where you live, etc) ie: audio clip singing posts, audio clip of asking neighbour for a cup of sugar, do a moon walk, call and old acquaintance/describe the outcome, etc
.. Photo challenges
.. Unique dinner pics
.. Prepare & share scavenger hunt ideas
.. Find, do and share something artistic
.. Share a gratitude list
.. Make/share a goal or bucket list
.. Make & share a vision board
.. Do a Tye-dye challenge
.. Host a zoom party with strangers--use new/emails for privacy
.. Make kindness rocks, photograph where you left them
.. Do a sidewalk chalk challenge
.. Discuss/promote ur favourite artists, musicians, writers, poets, books, etc
.. Have an upcycle challenge and share pics
.. Create an online discussion game: rewrite movie quotes,
.. Share a personal life hack ie I use a pen's pocket clip to old nails in awkward spaces (also safer lol)
.. Discuss time capsule items and bury them at a local beach in a metal container.. Fun for ppl with metal detectors to find yrs later
.. Make a virtual wish tree (thread?)
.. Volunteer challenge
.. Create a movie watching group, use a countdown to all stream at the same time.. Discuss in a zoom mtg, concurrently?
.. Discuss ideas to help someone in your neighbourhood and report back with accomplishments
.. Use secure privacy apps like signal or threema to form friendship groups

My grandma would make these sugar cookies every year for Christmas. Until a couple years ago I didn't have her recipe and would try others - but none were even similar. When I got the recipe I discovered the secret was lemon zest and nutmeg!

Now I make these annually, and WOW they're difficult. She always made them thin and crispy, but you almost have to roll them out on an ice block to accomplish that. Totally worth the effort though.

My grandma has been gone a decade but with the smell of these it's like she's here again.

My grandmother passed this year. She is one of the women who taught me how to sew by hand as a child specifically and how to be a self-sufficient craftsperson generally.

For my 8th birthday she gave me a quilt, like she did all of her grandchildren. I've minimized and thrown everything away to start fresh moving somewhere else several times in my life and it's one of the only things I've managed to keep around. All of my cousins stowed theirs away somewhere, or have them on display in some way or another, but mine has been keeping me warm since I was 8 while I've patched and mended it along.

This Christmas my mom gave me a pin cushion my grandmother made and she was taken aback that I went straight to using it and sticking pins in it instead of preserving it and displaying it. It's going to be my new main pin cushion.

Not everyone shares this sentiment, but I think the best way to honor any craftsperson is to use their gifts and creations, and use them well.

I don't want my grandmother to be a museum piece, carefully handled and sealed away like she left the world: in a distant hospital bed. I want her to be there with me every time I make use of all the knowledge and self-empowerment that she shared, like she lived.

Too many are living lives estranged from their families (or certain family members). One of the most painful rejections is to be shunned because of who you are and/or who you love. My heart goes out to all of those hurting this time of year...May you find "family" that celebrates you!

@KetoPlus

Today's Chia Chow Chat post (http://chiachow.net) which I don't typically share here but today is different...

Dec 24, 2023 - Christmas Eve. Also Sunday, pizza day. I have one more GF pizza in the freezer, which I will eat today, and then will start making my own crusts again. I have absolutely NO after-effects from the GF pizzas, and they are easy. I do OMaD (and IF of course) on Sundays, and my pain/inflammation remains under control. Today and tomorrow I will be doing things a little differently, tomorrow being Christmas, and there will be plenty of food at our family celebration! But my family is always willing to accommodate my (and Pete's, he's mostly heavily plant-based pescatarian) diets, making sure there are things we can also eat. And we bring stuff for ourselves as well. I will be making cookies that Pete & I can both eat, he will be taking his salmon salad for himself. And my plan, since OMaD won't be possible tomorrow, is to do a good fast after today's pizza, then tomorrow as small of an eating window as I can manage, avoiding, of course, the foods that cause me problems and the really carby ones. (I'm going to enjoy my family time and the grandkids and not track what I eat.) And then, as usual, I will go very low carb, super-carnivore for the next few days afterward. This is what always works for me when occasions like this arise.

How do you handle special occasions such as big holidays?

Damn! I feel like a finalist on GBBO after that. Let’s hope these turn out. I tried an “easy” cinnamon roll recipe a few years ago and they were not good. These are set to rise overnight and bake up hot & gooey for Christmas Day morning.
