New research makes it possible to calculate the emissions generated by a company’s #cash and #investments (cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities). This research illuminates that this previously #HiddenEmissions source is substantial. For some of the world’s largest companies, including #Alphabet, #Meta, #Microsoft, and #Salesforce, their cash and investments are their largest source of #emissions.
Corporate cash and investments do not just sit passively in bank accounts accruing interest. Rather, this money is used to finance everything from energy development to construction projects to small business loans, all of which generate emissions that banks and companies contribute toward.
Since the #ParisAgreement was signed in 2015, the world’s 60 largest commercial and investment banks have invested $4.6 trillion in the #FossilFuel#industry.

Last week, I went to visit the Royal Gunpowder Mills at Waltham Abbey. There are 175 acres of parkland there, and it's a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Most of the trees are alders, which, apparently, provide the best charcoal for making old-school black gunpowder. They used to coppice the trees for this until new propellants came in, around 1850. Presumably, that's when this tree was last cut back.
