I am NOT a compsci geek.

BUT I have managed to switch to #LinuxMint on a 2010 MacBook Air and it's a revelation. It auto-updates, it's fast, easy and the most relaxed time I've had with #Linux so far.

So, if anyone out there is thinking of switching, give it a go!

(oh, and if you're on Mac, you may need #BalenaEtcher to help the process)

Went through a few hiccups with the boot manager but I was finally able to install Linux Mint alongside Windows on my main laptop.

Why did I do this?

A few different reason...

I like Linux Mint.
I like the security.
I like that it doesn't sell my info.
I like that its customizable.

But the REAL reason I installed it?

I was bored. (ADHD)

Is that so wrong?

Glad I switched, fully, to a few months ago. I'm not a programmer or techie, and struggled with Linux in the past, but compared to a decade ago, the installation was really easy & it the user interface has improved dramatically.

For reference, using

Fediverse, hear my plea. I have an HP Omen 15 and was thinking on switching to due to the progressive enshittification of windows and the garbage. I know Laptops are tricky. What Distro would you recommend? Would Linux Mint fit the bill? I'm more of a KDE/Cinnamon person that a Gnome person FYI

@berniethewordsmith Yes. Linux Mint would be a fine choice. It's simple, lightweight and easy to use. Should run well on your laptop.

Taking my new (to me) ThinkPad 450 out for its first stroll. Using it while waiting for the car to be serviced. , , , all working like a charm. Keyboard and touchpad are almost perfect, battery life is super long. Screen is a little dim but hey. For under $100US I'm not complaining. This is exactly why I got it and set it up with linux, etc. Oh, also doing some journaling with and it seems to be syncing to my home computer with . Just about perfect!

@LouisIngenthron I have installed four(?) different distros in the last week, and they all went in fine except vanilla , which I don't know how I screwed it up, but I did. , , and were all just as easy as was once upon a time: click "ok" a bunch until you hit a welcome screen. Notably absent was the requirement that I sign into their exclusive service to even use the software.

Just saying. Your mileage has clearly varied.

I love the fact that when people referring to distros hear “it just works out of the box” the first thing they think of is . Say what you will, but this is a huge win for Linux as a whole, because that’s how you bring people over to our side.

I finally got around to installing Linux Mint on the old 2016 HP laptop that was my son's when he was 12 (he's now 20). It runs beautifully. My first time using Linux Mint and it is beautiful. This is my first step in abandoning Windows--so far, I can say it won't be missed.

Spent the day installing to an old Acer of my sister in law's brother (I've converted everyone to in the family). Acer's firmware was very buggy, so it took tricks to load grub.

Installed them a few apps, and they will be super happy with their new (old) laptop. Previously, 10 was dying on that laptop, it was that slow, as it was swapping furiously! Mint loaded in about 1 minute, which is good (considering the very slow hdd).

I'm not a "Linux Guy" really but I started re-evaluating it lately, and I think it might not just be for the Tech Weirdos anymore. It can absolutely be a daily driver for a lot of game developers now!
