No need to worry. My suggestion is to begin with a straightforward and user-friendly Linux distribution. Once you become comfortable with the command-line interface and other functions, you can switch to a more advanced distribution. Personally, I utilize the Ubuntu LTS desktop as my primary operating system for completing my tasks. As I am occupied with work, I don't have much time to experiment with the latest technologies. However, your experience may differ.
@nixCraft#Ubuntu was my first intro into using Linux based distros years ago. Used #LinuxMint for a bit (good for transition away from Windows), tried to like #Fedora, went to #Debian for a long while, and now I use #PopOS on a #System76 machine. Recently starting use #OPNsense (a #FreeBSD based router OS). Lots of flavors to fit your needs and tolerances!
I think I learned a lesson today when attempting to migrate something unproven: For the love of baphomet, test! And test again! I really want to get #mastodon going on #freebsd so I am going to use a spare domain I have for testing stuff called fugazied.com. It's appropriately named. 😹
Installed #Ubuntu on second desktop & then windows 10 on rarely used laptop. At least I have it if needed. I have old(ish) PCs but they run really well with #linux 🐧 #linuxmint
@Em0nM4stodon #linuxmint, for many years. It proved to be very reliable and easy to use. I use it on my main computer after having left #windows behind.
I think I got my #Grandfather so far, that he is willing to install #Linux with me on one of his Machines. I would choose between #KDE Neon and #Linuxmint for him. Or am I completely wrong? What do you think?
P.S.: He is not like the stereotype grandfather who has no idea about tech and conputers, so it must not be the most simple way, but also not the most complicated.
I guess a #debian based distro will be fine...
Oh and no *buntu #distros!
@SingingNala I have. At the time, I cound't even get it to install on #LinuxMint due to the number of errors the compiler was throwing.
If its been updated, I may try it again though.
I've setup a few installs of #LinuxMint#Debian Edition (LMDE) for family, friends, and myself. I really like it! Mint's Cinnamon desktop comes with sensible defaults, is easy to customize, and intuitive to use for new and old #Linux users alike.
My new open source operating stack consists of #almalinux , #debian, #linuxmint, #freebsd, and #openbsd. Each of these 4 operating systems have their distinct advantages and place. I love the #foss life.
In this week's #Linux and #OpenSource news video, we have a plan to add support for HDR and Variable Refresh Rate on Linux, chips from AMD that surpass Apple Silicon, and more dominant position abuse from Microsoft, plus updates on #LinuxMint 21.2, some new #GNOME apps, progress on #KDE Plasma 6, and more!
And also, I'm trying to replace the "walls of scrolling text" with more focused snippets so it's a bit more entertaining to watch! Let me know what you think!
@mp362@RockyC Thing with Nemo, for me, was that I couldn’t get used to the sorting options of (dot) files and folders. But then again #Linux allows you to plug in any file manager you want! It just baffles me how much good #FOSS software is out there.
#LMDE6 will also be released this summer based on #debian Bookworm. I just wonder when this will be the flagship distro (in favor of current Ubuntu-based #LinuxMint).
Gotta try #xfce as well one of these days. Where did I put that USB stick 🥳
I’m thinking of putting #Linux on my old Windows computer but I haven’t tried Linux since my college days. I used to dual boot and all of that and then I just stopped. Will #Ubuntu work on a possibly7(?) year old computer?
