People talk about #GamingOnLinux like it's such a new thing…
There was a company 20+ years ago (Loki Software) that chiefly ported games to linux (commercially).
There was also a wine-based #Proton-like compatibility layer called (IIRC) #CrossOver. I think it was actually an "open core" system, where sales of the software helped fund #Wine and/or older versions/portions of the software was released as source for wine.
After 2 - 3 weeks of trying both @protonmail and @fastmail I have decided to fully switch to Proton going forward.
With Proton you get email, ProtonPass, Proton VPN and other stuff. You also get 500GB of storage instead of the measly little 100GB of storage that Fastmail offers. Notifications on Fastmail were also VERY VERY delayed most of the time, on both Android and iOS.
Proton Mail now offers "Proton Pass" -- Don't trust them.
As soon as it becomes popular, they'll limit the service, and make it part of their paid plan.
They like to get people hooked on their services, then raise their prices.
I was an early adaptor of Proton Family, before they surprised everyone by discontinuing the service, then starting it back up nearly a year later at a most costly premium. -- They did that to their paying customers. Don't trust them.
Wondering if I should switch from Mozilla's VPN to Proton's VPN.
Mozilla works flawlessly on Android and Linux desktop, but was a bit of a pain to configure on the CLI.
Anyone have strong feelings about #Proton and their #VPN?
(Not interested in any other providers, thanks. Yes, I understand the limits of what a VPN can do. No, I don't need to to work on Mac, Windows, or iOS. Yes, your joke reply is very funny. No, I don't want to run my own.)
Ok, so I asked you to give me all the questions you had for #Proton. I collected all of that, and asked all I could I fit in an 1h30 hour long interview with Andy Yen, the CEO of Proton.
He talked features, business model, #Linux support, #privacy, security, and everything in between, and here is the full interview:
"Earlier this year, the Spanish police Guardia Civil sent legal requests through Swiss police to #Wire and #Proton, which are both based in Switzerland. (..)
Wire responded providing the email address used to register the Wire account, which was a Protonmail address.
@protonprivacy responded providing the recovery email for that Protonmail account, which was an iCloud email address, according to the documents."
I'm trying to install #Proton Bridge on a fresh #Kubuntu install, and keep running into this problem. Any hints out there?
EDIT 1: my package manager can't find 'libsecret' or 'secret-service'. Installing 'pass' does nothing. And kwallet isn't supported, which is ridiculous.
EDIT 2: Apparently installing gnome-keyring solves this. @protonmail: Bridge still needs serious work on #Linux...)
For anyone who might have missed it last week, I wrote an article about why I switched from Gmail to Proton Mail and you can read it and hopefully share it with others via the link below.
@protonmail also suggested that I apply for the partner program, which I did but haven't heard back yet. Hoping to hear back in the next day or two and hoping that I get accepted.
protonpass is available for a few weeks now and i really enjoy using it on my mobile devices and on firefox. there is no "official" app for mac and desktop safari yet (proton claims that they have to heavily rewrite the extension to make it work with safari) so i installed the ipad version on my m1 mini and it works - in a way....
Beware of you play #EA games on #linux through #proton. EA banned my account permanently and they won’t lift the ban. I was not even playing, I was connecting to the server from the #steamdeck.
Huge thanks to @protonmail for accepting me into the Partners program today!
Super excited to be a part of this.
Remember, if you're looking for a more secure email service, Proton is the way to go and if you want to give Mail Plus a try for one month free, let me know and I can provide you with a referral link!
I've recently signed up to the privacy-preserving service Proton. All the email, calendar, drive, VPN, and other services seem to hang off the proton.me domain. I wanted to download the Android apps to my phone - without using the Google Play Store. The VPN app is on F-Droid but none of the others are. So, […]
Ugh, @protonmail is missing some serious quality of life features, such as the ability to add emails directly to a sieve filter (you can only select "Always move sender's emails" which just creates a whole NEW filter. That might not be a massive deal except that Proton only allows for 100 active filters at the paid level.
Not feeling especially inspired by this service after two months of use, to be honest. It's a pretty expensive option for a large drop in use experience over mainstream programs.
I remember now why I stopped #gaming when I switched to #Linux: gaming on Linux sucks. But blahblah #Proton good it works on my machine. One, I don't believe you. The experience on MY machine sucks so bad there is no way this works on any machine, but keep sipping denial juice. Two, sure it 'works', in the same way mowing the lawn with a pair of scissors works. I just want to press enter and play a game, not hack into the mainframe because a fullscreen game crashes GNOME and restarts my PC!
I'm in the process of migrating from Google Workspace to Proton Mail, but I've hit a snag that might make me stick to Google. I have several email addresses for business, and yet Proton puts all emails in one inbox, which doesn't make any sense. So I'll get emails related to my writing in the same inbox as those for film, as personal emails, and as those for other work? I expected separate logins for each email.
It's only a dumb rumor, but if this goes down we might as well turn off the lights on #gaming as we know it. Especially all the #Linux and #Proton goodness that #Valve has pushed forward.
OC Hey Apple, any chance you wanna maybe... contribute... to WINE?
FYI: ProtonPass on Mac/Safari (Apple Silicon) German
