Hi, we're a tech startup run by libertarian Silicon Valley tech bros.

We're not a newspaper, we're a content portal.
We're not a taxi service, we're a ride sharing app.
We're not a pay TV service, we're a streaming platform.
We're not a department store, we're an e-commerce marketplace.
We're not a financial services firm, we're crypto.
We're not a space agency, we're a group of visionaries who are totally going to Mars next year.
We're not a copywriting and graphic design agency, we're a large language model generative AI platform.

Oh sure, we compete against those established businesses. We basically provide the same goods and services.

But we're totally not those things. At least from a legal and PR standpoint.

And that means all the laws and regulations that have built up over the decades around those industries don't apply to us.

Things like consumer protections, privacy protections, minimum wage laws, local content requirements, safety regulations, environmental protections... They totally don't apply to us.

Even copyright laws — as long as we're talking about everyone else's intellectual property.

We're going to move fast and break things — and then externalise the costs of the things we break.

We've also raised several billion in VC funding, and we'll sell our products below cost — even give them away for free for a time — until we run our competition out of the market.

Once we have a near monopoly, we'll enshitify the hell out of our service and jack up prices.

You won't believe what you agreed to in our terms of service agreement.

We may also be secretly hoarding your personal information. We know who you are, we know where you work, we know where you live. But you can trust us.

By the time the regulators and the general public catch on to what we're doing, we will have well and truly moved on to our next grift.

By the way, don't forget to check out our latest innovation. It's the Uber of toothpaste!

What keeps pulling me back into browsing every once in a while is the lack of good , , , and accounts.

I’ve searched for accounts to follow using all these tags and found only very few, and none of the power users I follow on Twitter. There is still a wealth of knowledge on Twitter that does not offer yet. If you know anyone please recommend them so I can

A question for everyone whinging about “#BigTech”:

Almost every “tech #oligarch” began with a scrappy #startup supported by customers who were fans of their work, building them up to what you now hate.

Every case is different, but in general did too much success change them or do you just hate too much success?

Big personal news: after 25 years at CNET, I’ve joined Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a startup developing zero-carbon power plants to help fight climate change. As head of content, I'll work to make knowledge of fusion mainstream as the technology proves itself worthy. Questions? Hit me up! These tech layoffs are absolutely terrible to behold. The turmoil, the second degree suffering, the anguish. It should teach us all a few lessons. Despite what our instincts might tell us, sometimes it pays to reject generous offers from these companies and settle for something less opulent but more meaningful and secure. It's possible. Be mindful when accepting offers from VC funded outfits. Scrutinize their numbers & business model just as they scrutinize you.

⟨ " Our economy is dominated by five aging tech giants – Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft. In the last twenty years, no company has commercialized a new technology in a way that threatens them. Why?

We argue that the tech giants have learned how to coopt disruption.

They identify potentially disruptive technologies, use their money to influence the startups developing them, strategically dole out access to the resources the startups need to grow, and seek regulation that makes it harder for the startups to compete. When a threat emerges, they buy it off. And after they acquire a startup, they redirect its people and assets to their own innovation needs.

These seemingly unrelated behaviors work together to enable the tech giants to maintain their dominance in the face of disruptive innovations. " ⟩

In addition to the tactics noted in the paper, the manner in which incumbents use standards development organizations and industry consortia to slow-roll anything that disrupts their existing product lines, and try to re-direct anything disruptive to something that they can (barely) incrementally implement is something that is not appreciated enough!

Startup idea:

Build a web site with up to the minute data on all the streaming services, and their associated partnerships.

Customers go there, click on all their streaming services and partnerships, they have access to.

Get a report back that shows how to get what I want for the least amount of money, taking advantage of those partnerships.

This exist? 🤔💰

Swedish startup Modvion is building the world’s tallest wooden wind turbine.

The towers are made from laminated veneer lumber, produced by glueing several massive layers of wood together. The startup says the material has a higher strength per weight than steel and is 30% lighter.

The tower will stand 105 metres and is being built for local energy utility Varberg Energi for its wind power site near the town of Skara.

April 2022: Digital freight broker Convoy announced a new round of funding, valuing the start-up at $3.8 billion.

Privileged, white, ex-Amazon exec, Convoy President and Chief Operating Officer Mark Okerstrom bragged, “One of the great things about our model is we’re able to thrive in all areas of all points in the cycle.”

Oct 2023: Okerstrom announces death of company and deflects blame: "the markets crushed us."

During the 13-minute all-company video call, the executives cited declining freight demand and venture capitalists' belt tightening.

So, let me get this straight: Demand for the company's product went down and it was unable to successfully beg for more money.

Seems like the company should have built up an emergency savings account, or moved in with relatives, or cut out those daily Starbucks, or scaled back on that avocado toast, or had more realistic expectations.

But, yeah, the market crushed you.

An idea for a startup 📌

Hey minds, I would like to discuss with you an old idea

Game Map with interactive panoramas, like Google Street View for 3d games

⭐ Let's think how it can be done, write in the comments

This could be an API for game developers to add a custom content creation mode to the game. Creating a routes where the camera will take pictures. And what to do with old games?
