I'm working on a doc with estimates for releases schedules (private and public) and feature timeline. It'll be an evolving doc but wanted to give more clarity in terms of expectations for everybody!
I'll share the doc EOD (PST).
But basically, private beta will start ramping up end of month. Initially supporting #kbin instances. But adding #lemmy support midway.
In the past week or two, I've been making a lot of updates to my Kbin userstyle, idkbin, to account for all the new features Kbin has been getting. This weekend, I had a bunch more motivation to work on it, so I decided to make a bunch of additions to the userstyle and make the next version 1.3.0 (as opposed to 1.2.7, which...
"'The threadiverse', aka #fediverse group servers like #guppe, #lemmy and #kbin are all based on the premise that each community is hosted on one instance, but users and posts can come from all over. So it's like any normal #phpBB-style forum, except you use your own user instead of having to register and check everywhere.
Makes sense to me, and I'm not saying that they should do it any other way, but this is exactly how mailing lists work."
Came across some #threadiverse compatibility issues in @toddsundsted's Ktistec project posted by @rahul (← this account is a #Ktistec instance) and it made me think: I would love to have a fediverse compatibility "issueathon" where we make a super list of everything that we expect to work across the fediverse and where all the issue are at.
What's the status of federation between Lemmy/KBin and Misskey/Sharkey/Firefish/Iceshrimp? I just tried loading several Lemmy and Kbin posts in Sharkey and it doesn't work. I remember having the same issue with Firefish, and I vaguely recall hearing awhile back it was something related to authorized fetch. Have their been any recent developments on that front? #FediQuestions#FediverseQuestions#Threadiverse#Lemmy#KBin#Misskey#Sharkey#Firefish#Iceshrimp
If you’re interested in checking out a #fediverse-based alternative to Reddit, come check out infosec.pub! It hosts a number of communities including one I’ve stood up for #cybersecurity / #infosec!
Speaking of #lemmy Tomorrow Reddit shuts off 3rd party access so many of you will be going Hoshit! and looking for where people migrated to on the #threadiverse.
Lemmy and Kbin both look like crap compared to reddit right now (they weren't ready for reddit to implode yet) SO once you've signed up on an instance (same basic idea as mastodon) head over to https://wefwef.app
21 users on https://dmv.pub! Let's get more! Anyone can join, but if you're in the #DMV#WashingtonDC#Maryland#Virginia area, I'd really love for you to join, contribute, and discuss local news and events! The more content, the better!
Seems like an interesting effort. A developer is building an alternative Java-based backend to Lemmy’s Rust-based one, with the goal of building in a handful of different features. The dev is looking at using this compatibility to migrate their instance over to the new platform, while allowing the community to use their apps...
So over the next few weeks it's time for me to become a true #fediverse user and not just a Mastodork. The two areas I want to get into first are #pixelfed and the #kbin /#lemmy#threadiverse. I've started looking into both but would love opinions from experienced users about good instances, best practices, etc if anyone feels like sharing
"Twitter and Reddit may have only lost a few million users to Mastodon and Lemmy so far, but these are nation-sized numbers, comparable to what Scandinavia is to the United States of America. The incumbents have allowed the fediverse to reach critical mass. It's only gonna get bigger"
The administrators of BeeHaw are considering moving on from Lemmy to a yet to be selected platform, citing a multitude of issues with the current state of development on the Lemmy project.
“We need a better site to link to than join-lemmy.org. It should concisely pitch lemmy to everyday users and suggest an instance for them to sign up at. Don’t get into the weeds about federation or choosing instances or selecting apps. Just select a sane default and point people to it. Rotate defaults to avoid overloading a given instance or making it too powerful.”
