    @LeviKornelsen cultural interchange gave the plains indians horses, which was a massive shift in lifestyle for them. Not a long lived one, but still.

    @LeviKornelsen Mayan cultures, Mound builders in Mississippi valley, I think the Iroquois though don't hold me to that.
    A long stretch of the Silk road was. Does Ancient Greece count?

    @LeviKornelsen @miriamrobern @linnaeus How do you define city?

    Da_Gut,
    @Da_Gut@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen @rdonoghue @miriamrobern @linnaeus So it includes Mayans without a doubt then. Maybe the mound cultures - they had trade (with mesoamerica at one end) but not enough is known of their governments to be sure.

    I finished reading the 5e D&D Oz book last night. Quite frankly, I kind of struggled to finish it. Don't get me wrong, it's clearly written and the art/layout is beautiful, but it's dull, especially when describing the city state's neighborhoods.

    Our trees love our homemade compost. This is a redbud tree with a garden bed around the tree where we planted some marigolds.

    Your plants and trees will love your homemade compost and worm casting. It is worth the work.

    @compost @BroadforkForVictory
    One of my favorite things about redbuds is the number of bees - especially bumble bees - that they attract. Being one of the earlier blooming plants, and prolific with the blooms, they are often covered in bees!

    Listening to the English audiobook of "A Man Called Ove" by Fredrik Backman narrated by J.K. Simmons. While I enjoyed Tom Hanks in the English film adaptation, Simmons would have made a truly FANTASTIC Ove / Otto. I don't normally do audiobooks (I have a book group that I really need to finish the book for) but this one has been nice.

    @seanbala @bookstodon I need to see both movies of that. I've seen part of the foreign movie, none of the Tom Hanks one.

    I encountered that book by getting with no knowledge of it out of a little free library.

    @Da_Gut@dice.camp avatar

    @n0madz @bookstodon no. Nettle and Bone is not horror. It’s a darker fairy tale with some horror overtones. It’s got her trademark whimsy and is darker than most of her fantasy books. The hollow places is one of her horror works.

    So I've been using Mastodon through a web browser since I got here more than a year ago.

    What are the benefits to using a dedicated app instead? How do I know which is right for me?

    @starhawk On my computer I use the web interface with 5 columns setup. On my phone I use an app. I don't think there is an advantage on the desktop to an app.

    Guide Dogs UK has a very important announcement for anyone with tattoos, a beard, an unconventional hairstyle, etc. You are needed to play with puppies.

    "We’re issuing a national appeal for volunteers with distinctive characteristics to help socialise the next generation of guide dogs. Our new research shows that 1 in 5 (20 %) of dog owners revealed their dogs have shown signs of fear or confusion when encountering unfamiliar physical attributes." https://bit.ly/3PgRTOc

    A woman with blonde and brown hair and facial tattoos and piercings wearing Guide Dogs branded navy blue scrubs whilst holding and smiling at a young black Labrador guide dog puppy. There is a grassy area and fence in the background.
    A man with a long beard and long hair tied in a ponytail wearing navy blue branded Guide Dogs scrubs holding a young yellow Labrador guide dog puppy and smiling. There is a grassy area and fence in the background.
    From left to right sitting in a row, a man with numerous blue coloured facial tattoos, a woman with facial tattoos and piercings and another man with long hair and a very long beard – all are wearing navy blue Guide Dogs branded scrubs. The first man is holding a toy for two young guide dog pups (yellow Labradors) to play with. The woman holds a young yellow Labrador puppy in her lap and is also holding a stuffed duck. The last man is holding a young yellow Labrador guide dog puppy on his lap, whilst holding a stuffed toy that the pup is playing with. There is a grassy area and fence in the background.

    @yingtai Boosted, even though I'm not in the UK. I knew a parrot breeder once who tried hard to find different folks to socialize the baby parrots. Especially males - ethnic males were particularly nice, for that same reason. Men in general she valued, because its a lot easier to get women to socialize anything. At least in the rural south. :)

    Politicians, corporations, AIPAC… all so afraid of the truth they got congress to fast track legislation to ban TikTok because the youth say Free Palestine.

    It’s not a foreign interest that's pushing pro-Palestine content which is undermining US foreign policy. It’s the people who are no longer falling for genocidal propaganda and have been watching the truth play out before their very eyes for months on end. We would be seeing the exact same thing on meta if they would stop silencing people, deleting pro-Palestine accounts and posts, and falsely translating Arabic to fit their imperialist and genocidal agenda.

    This is about suppressing information and stomping dissent. It’s about censorship.

    Maybe it’s at a higher volume now, but none of this is anything new. Content and information about protests, fascists, and police brutality has been censored for a while now. Anyone paying attention in 2020-21 saw how much censorship there was. Posts getting removed that didn’t evade any of the terms on said platforms, leftist creator accounts and journalists being banned from platforms, etc. Anything that undermines the interests of corporations and capitalism is going to be perceived as a major threat- especially when they gain traction and wide support from the actual people.

    Things are not looking great.

    Da_Gut,
    @Da_Gut@dice.camp avatar

    @alissaazar It might be the immediate impetus (I don't know), but there has been a push to ban Tik Tok for years. I know I was hearing a push for it at least 4 years ago.
