I have been trying to create gardening experiences for incarcerated folks in New Mexico. Last year, incarcerated people, both adolescents and adults in various residential facilities established multiple gardens. Spent some time in a village in Kenya teaching with the Peace Corps. Profile pic is taken at the hallowed grounds of Azovstal, where the last stand of the defenders of Mariupol, took place. Canada’s largest private high school recently organized a genocide solidarity trip in which students cooked for Israeli soldiers. In a sane world, the school’s charitable status would be revoked.

It is rather ironic that Canadian high school students would travel to Israel, and cook a meal for IDF soldiers, just as the IDF is restricting the food supply for Palestinian children, to the point where children are dying. Teaching students to ignore oppression, and reward the oppressors, is quite the achievement. Of course, this is the miniscule version of what our American President is doing. He just rewarded IDF war criminals with 16 billion.

Social media disappointments:

  1. Journalists are still actively participating at exTwitter, thereby actively supporting Musk, who is helping extremists bring down democracy and, by extension, a free press.

  2. Reddit got away with stomping its volunteer moderators and users, and its execs are cashing in on an IPO that in a more just world would have flopped.

  3. Writers I respect decided to stick with Substack despite arrogant, extremist-friendly investors and leadership.

On the positive side: journalists helping fund Twitter by continuing to bring their followers there, qualify for an honorary brownshirt, as a supporter of a Twitter that gives a platform to the fascist "Daily Stormer", and Nick Fuentes, who denies the holocaust took place, and promotes the genocide of Jews (Wikipedia). Normalizing anti-semites is a recipe for disaster.

I could see, how the US may have never supported Ukraine, perhaps arguing that Russia was Europe’s problem.

I could also see, how the US would have supported Ukraine even more.

But what I really do not get, is the inconsistency of supporting Ukraine for two years with USD 68 billion, and then immediately after that investment decide not to follow through.

This is an absolutely meaningless use of tax dollars.

These MAGA republicans are dedicated to fighting democracy in the US and across the world. Fortunately, there is a bi-partisan majority in favor of the bill, and the discharge petition would probably already have reached 218, if the Senate hadn't bound it with military aid for Israel. About 40 Democrats are looking at more funding for bombs for Israel as unacceptable - while it's mass slaughter of Palestinian women, children, and non-combatant men continues.

You raise an interesting premise. There certainly is a strong, patronizing British colonial flavor to the Zionist project in Palestine. I tend to focus on the lamentable history of genocidal behavior documented in the Jewish Old Testament. One nation after another was wiped out. Israel now seems a fundamentalist entity which is now taking no prisoners. Our Catholic President Joe Biden has signed us up for a genocide, as hard as it is to believe.

I was just informed by one of the admins that I have 14 days to leave functional.cafe after I called a troll doing genocide apologia in my comments a zionist ape, where should I go? What servers don't bow to the complaints of ?

Functional.cafe are claiming I'm simply a multiple offender of their rules, which i will admit is true ever since they changed their rules, but I would like for it to be clear. They changed their rules in October specifically to accommodate Zionists complaining about my posts, the very day a tagged post of mine blew up and became among the most shared BDS posts on the activity pub network. I initially agreed to CW political posts, but as 's in has accelerated, killing all but one of my students in Gaza along with most of their families, I've concluded that hiding this behind content warnings is itself bowing to mild repression for the sake of satisfying the demands of the most extreme oppression: genocide.

I've seen plenty of pro-genocide posts in the local server feed. I dont think they are being asked to leave or even getting their posts censored, as mine increasingly have been (even removing posts with many likes from months ago, apparently on demand).

I'm sad I'll be losing all my past posts, especially those about and that I occasionally rediscover. Where can I go that won't turn similarly sour? My time with the may be up tbh. After being blocked and soft-blocked by nearly everyone I was buddies with in the community (for years!) for being an anti-genocide Jew, and now this, its quite clear that even spaces that act like they stand for universal liberties above all are actually willing supporters of the most oppressive regimes and ideologies on the planet. At least insofar as they are in origin and character.

Immediately in the wake of Biden's call to , raising the scary specter of the US actually complying with its own aid conditions meant to avoid arming war criminals, as many have begged for months, Israel announces it will open the Erez crossing for 1st time in 6 mos.

I predict it'll help some, but won't shift in Netanyahu's genocidal aims or plans to starve . His govt will still do everything it's doing at other points, to thwart entry of food, water, & medicine to .

JeffreySmith,
@JeffreySmith@mastdn.social avatar

@chargrille

As I recall from studying psychology, rewarding a behavior makes it more likely to reoccur. So whatever words come out of our President's mouth, if Israel under Netanyahu has killed 13,000 Palestinian children, and Pres. Biden still wants to give Israel 18 billion in aid, that works out to rewarding Israel 1,384,615 dollars for each child they've killed. That seems less of a way to dissuade Israel from murdering more innocent children, but rather a recipe for genocide.

reminder that if Netanyahu & the US gets away with this in — targeting journalists, targeting hospitals and schools and refugee camps, starving millions of children, mass murder on the scale of tens of thousands, shutting down press, internet and information, killing humanitarian workers, preventing crucial aid convoy, firing on people receiving aid, and planning resettlement of regions based on ethnic identity — these methods will be normalized & advanced by other western nations & govts

Our democracy is paying the price for tolerating the Bush administration's refusal to abide by the Geneva Convention forbidding torture. If the formulators of the torture policy had been held accountable, it would have made it less likely for Netanyahu and Biden to engage in mass murder of non-combatant Palestinians.

Smaller tomatoes: cherry types, golden nugget, and Stupice do well in containers in New Mexico. You'll want a bucket at least 12" deep. The unremitting heat/sun got to the Stupice last year, but if you have some cloudy days, the Stupice is cold tolerant, productive, and tasty. A larger bucket, like a five gallon, will allow more fruit to be produced.

JeffreySmith,

The Stupice is an heirloom from Czechoslovakia so it should be okay in the north. My area in New Mexico is at 6500 ft, so it handles quite cool nights, but as it has broad leaves, the UV can be an issue this high.

Fine growing area: I love to check the Isleta farms by you for hay for my goats. Since your UV is lower the Stupice should be good. The Golden Nugget has quite small leaves and loves the NM sun and heat.
