"After traveling 4,500 miles, I have spent less than $5 on electricity. Five dollars! That’s less than a cost of a mocha latte something at Starbucks. That is astounding."

Science and industry were well aware of the dangers of leaded gasoline when it was first introduced in the 1920s. But adding tetraethyl lead to motor fuel made internal combustion engines work better. And that made it possible to turn the automobile into a mass market product. The result was the biggest mass-poisoning in human history. Bestselling author Steven Johnson joins us to mark the 100th anniversary of the invention of leaded gas. Episode 112 is here:

NEW EPISODE: Fixing America’s Car Culture with David Zipper.

We talk with @davidzipper -- one of the hardest-working analysts on the transportation scene today -- about the excesses of the auto industry, our road fatality crisis, the absurd way speed limits are determined on American streets, and whether we might ever be able to swap out our bloated SUVs for electric golf carts.

"...the city of Paris has made enormous investments in public transit, built hundreds of miles of bike paths, and closed many streets to cars. Car trips within the city dropped by almost sixty per cent between 2001 and 2018, car crashes dropped by thirty per cent, and pollution has improved. The city is quieter and calmer; test scores go up as the air around schools cleans up."

"In 2021, half of all trips in the United States were less than three miles, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Making those short trips on an e-bike instead of in a car would likely save people money, cut their emissions, and improve their health and happiness."

"Studies have shown that a mere 10% shift from car drivers to bike riders has resulted in a 40% reduction in traffic congestion. Even if you never touch an e-bike, you would benefit from supporting their increased use."

"Instead of giving the biggest incentives to the biggest batteries, government policy should focus on electrifying the vast majority of daily trips, which start and end at home and could easily be handled by vehicles with 100 miles of range or less.... That means incentivizing e-bikes, plug-in hybrids, and other small battery electric vehicles, not holding fleet electrification hostage to the 5 percent use cases."
