Polyherbal cyberpolitics posting. Gay vegan living.

Avi is me in a hat and a short-sleeved flamingo-print button-up in a parking lot. I am mixed and 29 in the picture (30 now).

Background is a blooming palo verde bearing pendulous boughs laden with yellow blossoms almost completely obscuring the thin, skin-like green bark.

"Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit...

When I bought this titanium teapot as a gift to myself for finding a new job years ago I really felt bad about how much it cost— but I’ve decided it’s, in a way the ideal sort of expensive treat: absurdly durable, timeless, utilitarian, strange.

This one is going in my will. I hope someone takes it with them to space someday. (that is my new heirloom benchmark: how likely is this to be in the 1 ton allowance for those moving to the dyson swarm never to set foot on earth again?)

@futurebird beautiful! Does it affect the flavor? Do you typically just use it for bright greens etc?

Dear computer friends - as information workers on strike at , im trying to think of some digital picketing strategies. Ways of incurring additional costs and disruptions to operation that are within the bounds of the law. One of the biggest levers we have is grading, and UCLA uses a fork (?) of Canvas (bruinlearn). Does anyone have any bright ideas for how to run up a cloud bill? Something along the lines of uploading enormous files to course pages, asking students to download a directory with millions of files as a .zip, that kinda thing. Something thats an arms length shy of CFAA but something that could let our students and remote colleagues help with the strike. Any ideas? Boosts welcome. (I do not speak for or represent UAW 4811 in any way as a rank and file member)

Edit: dm me for my signal if you are curious about such a topic and are not necessarily volunteering any information in the affirmative or negative

cykonot,
@cykonot@mas.to avatar

@jonny the kali irc channel would be a good place to start /s

maybe the server automatically compresses certain types of data, and they didn't limit the compute / queue? Or takes some other automatic action that could be abused.

Edit: they probably dont charge for compute but that could affect availability? Idk good luck

cykonot,
@cykonot@mas.to avatar

@jonny kali linux is for pentesting and stuff. They may give good advice, but once you begin exploring hacker IRCs you may be tempted to take extremely effective action.

The /s itself was sort of sarcastic? 😅

How does genocide happen in 2024?

It doesn’t, of course. As Graeme Wood from The Atlantic explains, there are only tens of thousands of legally killed children, that’s all.

(Thanks, Graeme, we were all apparently very confused.)

See, y’all were getting worked up for nothing.

HOAs should have residents, not owners, vote. All they do now is let landlords write laws.

HOA reform now! Let residents vote! LANDLORD'S Associations are some of the most antidemocratic legal institutions in America today.

@jonny generate from same length-controlling variable, control access with something which automatically appends or trims, or... idk

cykonot,
@cykonot@mas.to avatar

@jonny well, do you control array creation? That is more ellegant than access control if you dont have to write too much.

You could also duplicate arrays before any manipulations, and change the dupes in any necessary ways or generate new ones if they are not satisfactory.

Embed them in a higher dimensional object? (Again, at creation. Just an array with an extra dimension to pool all the squares of a given size)

Edit: I cannot imagine the use of breaking the highlighted rule? So maybe idk

cykonot,
@cykonot@mas.to avatar

@jonny you could store the arrays in other arrays named for a given dimension

Honestly im not a json guy and was giving a language-agnostic answer. Apologies i could not help more.

Edit: I think dynamic generation or duplication>manipulation makes sense? But i do not know what your goal is.

cykonot,
@cykonot@mas.to avatar

@jonny my initial experience with json was absolutely cursed, sorry I am not super familiar with the tools built into it. Maybe there's another js library that will help you?

I’ve been in this business, writing software professionally, since I started my first software business at 16 in high school an an Apple ][. That’s 45 fucking years. It would never occur to me to steal other people’s code, let alone their likenesses, voices, or art.

Just eject these thieving “AI” companies into the sun. These people, and the VCs that fund them, are a cancer on the software industry.

Stack Overflow announced that they are partnering with OpenAI, so I tried to delete my highest-rated answers.

Stack Overflow does not let you delete questions that have accepted answers and many upvotes because it would remove knowledge from the community.

So instead I changed my highest-rated answers to a protest message.

Within an hour mods had changed the questions back and suspended my account for 7 days.

Diff view of a stack overflow question showing it being changed from the original text to a protest message, then being changed back again by a mod. Protest text reads: Why does OpenAI get to profit from our work? I have removed this question in protest of Stack Overflow's decision to partner with OpenAI. This move steals the labour of everyone who contributed to Stack Overflow with no way to opt-out. OpenAI has a history of flooding the web with inaccurate information and have explicitly stated that they will never pay creators for their work.

A future for the web is the radical idea that its bad to put all data in a single place owned by 3 companies and rented by a few hundred. The internet wasnt a mistake, the cloud was a mistake. Platforms were a mistake. A mistake where its not only possible but routine for "everyone's health data" to get stolen. https://infosec.exchange/@patrickcmiller/112341111375581551

I need to share my health data with like 3 people that arent me. Why on earth is that data in the same pile as literally everyone else's.
