So I was working on a computer for my mom earlier. It's dual booting Debian with KDE because she wants to learn Linux, and I figured KDE resembles Windows. Anyway, I was setting up shortcuts so she could find all of her files she normally uses, but there's one problem. appears to do something weird. There's an empty file called "OneDrive", that appears to be a pointer, but the OneDrive "folder" isn't present. Anybody know where OneDrive "actually" stores files?

gerowen,
@gerowen@mastodon.social avatar

@kkarhan It's just weird; it "says" in Windows that the actual path is D:\OneDrive (it's stored on a separate drive), yet when viewing that drive in Linux, OneDrive is just a file with a size of 0 bytes, so there's some weirdness going on there, some metadata attached to it to obfuscate away the real location. It probably has something to do with how it handles some files being physically there and some of them are only online, but still get displayed when you open the folder.

At an archery tournament and her flight is over, so we've got hours to kill before I have to drive the bus back to our home county. So we're playing some Portal 2 co-op on while we wait.

Today my daughter mentioned that her friend at school has an app called . I investigated. It shows explicit content even after telling it I was only 9, it requests permission to "Make and Manage calls", and goes far out of its way to avoid DNS blocking. From connecting to randomized Russian domains to not even making DNS requests at all (hard coded IPs?), I eventually gave up. I've blocked the website, and my kids can't install apps without approval anyway.

The first video that came up was a girl on her hands and knees twerking.
There's a notification at the bottom of the screen as soon as you install the app. If you click that icon, it takes you to a screen that requests permission to make and manage phone calls.

is testing federation for a few selected profiles. I'm now following @mosseri! It's one-way for now, but it's exciting. It's a step towards the interoperable social web that we've been advocating for 🙂

@Gargron @mosseri That's cool. I can't see any of their posts, but it'll be cool to see when it actually rolls out.

@mori_au I just don't get the hype around trying to hack your way into iMessage which is a proprietary walled garden. If Apple wants to keep it proprietary then just tell people on iPhones to use Signal. It's open source, cross platform and has been audited by third parties. If they don't want to use Signal to talk to you, then obviously they don't actually want to talk to you that bad.

It’s hard not to say “AI” when everybody else does too, but technically calling it AI is buying into the marketing. There is no intelligence there, and it’s not going to become sentient. It’s just statistics, and the danger they pose is primarily through the false sense of skill or fitness for purpose that people ascribe to them.

gerowen,
@gerowen@mastodon.social avatar

@Gargron I've been telling people this forever and they don't want to hear it. They're so enamored with the science fiction of "AI" that they don't want to believe that these companies will lie for money.

I was shocked witnessing someone logging into their bank on the phone in public recently:

  1. Their phone’s big display was at full brightness so everyone around could see what they were doing.
  2. They typed their password in, so no password manager. Unsurprisingly the password was weak: 5 lowercase letters and 1 numeric character.
  3. They didn’t have any kind of 2FA set up!

How on earth is this still happening?! 🤦

It’s fucking nuts that service providers can just remove your purchases like this without refunds.

@gamingonlinux Playstation did the same thing to me way back with movies I had purchased directly from them.

With modern consoles you don't "own" anything, you're just renting a license to content for as long as they feel like making it available.

3.5 dropped on the stable channel last night and today alongside a firmware update for Valve's official dock. This updates the Arch base along with new graphics drivers, new firmware (UEFI/BIOS) for the itself and more. It also adds support for HDR, variable refresh rate and several bug fixes.

I did some testing with Death Stranding and the HDR looks great, though it'll take some getting used to. Lighting aside, the colors seem to pop more.

A photo showing the update progress for dock firmware.

    @Gargron @polygon I'm having to break the habit of removing tracking bits because I've noticed journalists at press.coop have been adding a bit to the url showing that readers arrived there from Mastodon, so I want them to know that their Mastodon feed is generating traffic and therefore revenue, that way they'll stay here.

    Just ran down to and noticed that in , the parties are not represented by the elephant and donkey on the ballots, they are represented by a log cabin and a chicken.

    gerowen,
    @gerowen@mastodon.social avatar

    @deborahh It's one ballot and just has the parties labeled. Here's the photo I actually took but the ink on these copies was so blurry I googled for a better quality image because I couldn't tell what the Republican image was supposed to be.

    Our ballots have an option for "straight party" where you can just click a party and it'll auto fill all the entries, then you get prompted to just look over and review them before submitting them.
