One of the things that I truly miss in @kde is a modern and actively-maintained diff tool. Gnome/GTK has Meld which despite of ugly GTK style, is a very decent diff tool which also allows comparing "blank files" which user can copy-paste snippets from elsewhere. has kdiff3 and kompare, both of which feel and look dated and old-school.

@Mehrad @kde Kate has a git diff integration. It only works for git projects.

@daniel @cullmann If you cannot create yourself a bug report, could you please share some Infos here?

Which windows do you have? Can you see if Kate's RAM use increases over time? Does it depend on interacting with Kate or also happens when the app is open in the background only?

A loud part of the Fediverse (majority or not 🤷) is afraid of federation with . I disagree! For many organisations, this is a chance to escape the and improve compliance. They can have a data-protection friendly presence in the and still have followers who choose to have their accounts on platforms. I hope that (a) Instagram accounts get also access to Fediverse content (b) they implement moving servers. 😉

Hands up if you think public EU money being awarded by @NGIZero / @fsfe should be subject to a transparent process where we can see all internal discussions/comments/reasoning concerning funding decisions including who made them.

I detailed our last funding application myself here but it only tells half the story:

https://ar.al/2022/07/29/nlnet-grant-application-for-domain/

I think the focus should be this degree of transparency in the public procurement of services from large-scale IT vendors . The spending is magnitudes higher.

This would normally mean that facebook can reuse the cookie across all websites using .org. Is that even allowed by browsers? Any experiences on this topic?

I publish today the free software (pre-release; MIT license) – a plugin for static websites for easy self-hosting of maps.

I proved to myself that privacy-friendly self-hosted (as opposed to in the cloud) for displaying locations on websites can be accomplished in a few days with minimal resources. In the future, I will consider this as my new baseline when looking at Art. 25 (data protection by design and by default).

Those of you caught up debating the technical minutiae of federating with Threads are missing the forest for the trees.

This is about one thing: Affording social capital to/normalising/legitimising Meta/Facebook/surveillance capitalism (and thereby delegitimising those who oppose them).

Hey, if the author of Mastodon thinks Meta/Facebook/Instagram/surveillance capitalism is socially acceptable there must be something wrong with you if you don’t.

So thanks for that, Eugen.

(Yes, I’m livid.)

rriemann,
@rriemann@chaos.social avatar

@aral @davep

Do you assume that will reuse third-party Fediverse account data for e.g. surveillance? The and the Irish data protection authority asked Facebook to rely on consent as a legal basis. One can now wonder how free this consent is if you otherwise need to pay 100€ per year or so. However, Facebook has no good leverage to seek this consent from those third-party Fediverse users. Hence, should we rely on instead of limiting APIs?

rriemann,
@rriemann@chaos.social avatar

@shadowsminder @john380 @davep @aral

Consent must be informed and specific under . Any Fediverse server may use consent or legimate interest to display public Fediverse content on their server. However, it is not clear to me how consent for or legimate interest of repurposing data for behavior analysis/ads could be justified.

Every home server can also decide their API terms of use that Facebook would need to respect. (Disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer)

rriemann,
@rriemann@chaos.social avatar

@davep @shadowsminder @john380 @aral

Individual blocking of by Fediverse users could be interpreted as withdrawal of consent and objection to processing on the basis of 's legitimate interest under .

For me, this is quite obvious. The last words have the courts if Facebook would have a different view. Facebook would need to make such processing transparent in their privacy notice.

Cool KDE Plasma Tip: Quickly access task manager apps with [Meta] + [number]

@kde's task manager usually lives in the panel located by default at the bottom of your desktop (see attached image).

Quickly open or display apps shown in the task manager by holding down the [Meta] (aka "Windows") key and hitting one of the number keys at the top of your keyboard.

Reach the first app on the left with [Meta] + [1], the second from the left with [Meta] + [2], etc.
