Synth genius Wendy Carlos studied physics & music at Brown & Columbia. She helped develop the 1st Moog synthesizer & her 1968 classical album Switched-On Bach went platinum. She brought #music & tech together & composed soundtracks for A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Tron & more.
Carlos was assigned male at birth & transitioned to female. Unfortunately, many journalists focus more on her gender than her accomplishments that changed music forever. http://www.wendycarlos.com
For those new to Mastodon, here are some handy tips on getting the most out of your experience:
Follow a lot of people
Follow a lot of people
Follow a lot of people
Follow a lot of people
You can always un-follow them later, if you want to 😋
Also, click on and then follow hashtags that interest you, like #Music or #Books or #ClimateChange or especially #FollowFriday, and discover more good people to follow.
Plus: put these people in lists so it's less overwhelming. You can dip in to start the day with your Friends list, and maybe "Good vibes" at lunch and save News for the evening or weekend for example.
Set up columns in your client. For mobile, choose a client that handles list-making and list-viewing well.
(I recommend @megalodon on android. There are others, too).
Remember: you’ll do more for musicians if you delete Spotify, pirate all your mp3s and buy a single album every month on a platform with fairer percentages (Bandcamp, formaviva, heck even iTunes).
@mnl I really appreciate how Bandcamp promotes buying and owning music, making it attractive to do so over streaming.
I like seeing the album arts in my collection, I think it's fair being prodded to shell out after listening to an album several times, and the playlist feature only allowing music I own makes me want to pick up individual little songs here and there.
Then I began tooting my #music and a ton of #puns#jokes, and #memes. And you all responded so genuinely, and with such positivity, that I very quickly was made to feel at home.
My deepest gratitude goes out to the #Mastodon community, a #community that has literally improved the quality of my time on this spinning rock as it hurtles through space, towards a future that seems more uncertain every day. It’s unlike any other “social media platform” here.
Today, I celebrate the arbitrary milestone of five thousand followers, and I just wanted to say thank you.
Thank you for the favourites, the boosts, the follows, and the comments.
Thank you for your conversations, discussions, and corrections.
Thank you for listening to my music and sharing your thoughts on it with me, and for following along on your chosen streaming service. This has been amazing.
But, above all, I’d like to thank you all for making Mastodon the friendly and welcoming place that it is. My experience here is one of wonderful acceptance, and it has been truly humbling. There is nowhere else quite like it.
@dgar Congrats! I hope to get to 5k myself some day, something I couldn’t accomplish in over 15 years on the bird site. Your feelings about Mastodon echo my own so I’m very glad to hear it’s treating you well. Take care of yourself.
https://jam.coop now has a simple homepage to help you find artists and their releases. If you're an artist, we're ready for you to add and sell your music - get in touch here or contact at jam dot coop.
I am super proud and excited for this one you guys. Please give this a listen, if you adore music.
The next #music artist in the @ESPR portfolio will be the award-winning Alexis Morrast. A vocal prodigy and Berklee music academic, this winner of the legendary “Live at the Apollo Theatre” is the future of modern jazz music.
A 639-year-long piece of music being played in a cathedral in Germany has just changed a chord for the first time in 2 years - after letting that previous single chord drone out day and night - as crowds gather in anticipation.
@donutshoes@aeon_music That’s helping the top 20% (as usual!) but doesn’t really affect the remaining 80% that much, 1000 streams is worth less than 5 dollars on Spotify. In other words, they were always shitty with everyone who was not Taylor Swift, this hasn’t changed now.
now, you see none of that money and it gets rolled up to the top into a pop star's paycheck
???
Saw folks saying "you're not going to miss $5" without looking at the big picture. We're talking 100s of millions of $$ being funneled up to top earners and executives.
Hello Mastodon! My name is Alex and I'm new to your beautiful platform :)
I'm a violinist currently based in Prague, I hope you will enjoy an original song as a little #introduction
I'm still trying to get how things work here, so far I'm managing with the help of @aural, who kindly brought me here and has been very patient 😁
See you around! https://youtu.be/ac5MvX_V1DY
Masto pals, looking for suggestions. My best friend is battling #cancer and, as a result of that and other conditions, it has become hard for her to play her heavy #guitars. She's looking for a lighter electric guitar so she can continue playing through her treatment. Not necessarily a short scale guitar, just a lighter one. Any #guitarist#musician have any recommendations I can give her on a specific brand or model? Boosts appreciated for reach 🤗🎸 #music
@mpirnat Oh wow, Mike, thank you for all this information! Lots to work with here in your replies. It's so great to read the finer details from someone's experience with an instrument. I will looking into these for consideration on her list. Thank you! 🤗
Hello I'm Paul aka BirdsOfPraise, I've been on fedi since maybe 2016 or something. I like #music (making and consuming), #nature (being therein), stand up #comedy, #fringeTheatre, etc etc.
I live in #Leeds UK, I'm a big ol' #queer and I do web dev work for the #BFI
This is currently a single-user instance so I would appreciate a few boosts for visibility!
Just heard beloved Boston WGBH music presenter Brian O'Donovan — on an encore broadcast of his "Celtic Sojourn" — discussing old guard vs. new guard in Irish traditional music. He capped it with this perfect line from Gustav Mahler:
"Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire."
Spotify officially demonetises all tracks with under 1,000 streams
This is just an insanely bone-headed move that is so pointless.
These artists don't even get paid that much money, and yet Spotify wants to cut off their revenue.
I'm done with Spotify. In fact, I think I'm flat-out done with music streaming services. All of them are exploitative. back to buying digital albums for me.
@soheb They totally screwed up music, and the podcast business model. Some of my favorite podcasts are going, gone directly because of them. NEVER EVER
My debut EP is FINALLY ready for your ears! It's an emotional, melodic journey through love, loss, and personal demons, but wrapped in a catchy, cathartic rock & roll package.
I think you're gonna love it!
It's available at #Bandcamp 10 days ahead of streaming platforms, and each $4 purchase also bundles in the original demos of each song. Turn it up, sing along, and rock out!
Oh this is just wonderful. Read this and listen to Paul playing Claire de Lune to an 80 year old elephant and the world feels better #Piano#Elephants#Music
@MoiraEve just listened to this and thought you might enjoy it too - the amazing story of how the #Jazz saxophonist Tony Kofi came to music and taught himself how to play! 😊
Calling all #music fans! 📢 (Un)inspired by the non-comprehensiveness of the #1001Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list, we're making a Mastodonian 1001 Albums list! 📝
Tell me THE album(s) you think everyone should hear, any genre/language/year, and I'll add to the list (reply here or DM; let me know if you want the submission to be anonymous). And even if you don't add an album, check out the list - maybe you'll find your next fave. :ablobjam:
Hey all, for our Mastodonian 1001 must-hear albums list, I've added a note in the description with the number of albums currently in the queue, which I'll keep updated for a sense of where we're at.
Once I've cleared the current backlog, we'll be getting pretty close to 500 albums!!! :amariokartyoshi:
Thanks to all who have already sent in submissions, boosted, liked, and checked out the list! You're all wonderful. :blobaww:
So far 80+ Mastodonians have added 750+ albums from 85+ places/peoples to our own version of the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list.
Wanna join in? Tell me THE album(s) you think everyone should hear, any genre/language, and I'll add it (w/your handle; let me know if you want your instance mentioned too).
Hello friends. Just our recurring note that we don't know what the weekend entails for you but hope our community of artists and friends can help get you through it as a healthy distraction, calming focus, or pure enjoyable discovery.
Do you need it eclectic? Super comfy? Extra loud? We got you across three channels of independent music and spoken word.
And the evergreen reminder of the power you have to help keep the world and the fedi filled with wonderful wild and weird independent art.
If you enjoy something you hear, read or see do try to take a moment to drop a kind word to the artist. The word itself, the effort and resonance are all rocket fuel for our creative cousins.
Material support for our creative friends is truly amazing, but even more of us can afford a kind word and that rocks huge!
