Personal Justifications for different phone life cycles

Yesterday, I was reading a thread that asked what's the point of buying a new phone as often as as people do. In the comments there were a variety of answers, but what interested me is that there were a wide variety of answers for how long each person liked to go before upgrading. So I've attempted to come up with justifications...

Can anyone point me in the direction of persons pursuing self-sufficient lifestyles? The could be mental, physical, or other and the self-sufficiency could be from a , or perspective.

Looking for social media accounts, books, blogs, youtube or people doing this kind of thing outside of modern socials that would be happy to have a conversation about it.

In a society where unsustainable products are increasingly frowned upon, why are sustainable options more expensive?

Shouldn't a 1litre handwash refill pouch cost considerably less than single use plastic pump dispensers filled with the equivalent volume?

Is there such a thing as a hidden sustainability tax?

It’s official: July was the hottest month ever recorded on Earth. The US is =finally= acting on transitioning to a clean-energy economy, thanks to Biden’s infrastructure bill, but we really REALLY need to get on the stick with this. There’s no time to waste. , folks. Not seven years from now; now three months from now. One thing I'm trying to improve upon is my use of washing sponges. I did use compostable ones for a while, but they smelled awful very quickly and had to be thrown out.

I’m now using a Sisal brush which works well for most things, but miss having a scouring sponge. Can Sisal ‘sponges' be cleaned with white vinegar and dish soap or use another method to kill bacteria?

I missed this last month: France has launched an initiative to reduce textile waste by paying people to repair their clothes instead of throwing them out.

Starting October, people will be able to claim between €6 and €25 of the cost of mending clothes and shoes. The money will come from a €154 million fund and is meant to support businesses in offering more apparel repair services.

Cool stuff! 🧵🪡

Sustainability tip: instead of using and reusing plastic utensils, just go to your local thrift store and buy real forks, spoons, knives (they're usually 50 cents or at most a dollar each), and wash them. They're affordable enough you don't have to worry about losing them, no plastic leaching, and they don't break when you try to use them!

This morning, a VPS hosting a small e-commerce site (powered by WooCommerce on Ubuntu 22.04) experienced another out-of-memory issue. A colleague (one of the developers) urgently called me, asking to upgrade the VPS due to excessive load.

I pointed out (again, as has often happened in recent weeks) that a VPS with 32GB of RAM (!!!) and 16 dedicated cores (!!!) should not run out of memory with just five simultaneous visits to a small e-commerce site. We host much larger and busier websites on much smaller VPSs. There's likely a WordPress module with a leak, or some interaction between modules causing this issue.

The response: Okay, but just add more RAM and power to solve it.

The illusion of "infinite resources" in the Cloud has led to poor development habits. Sometimes I wonder how much energy and resources we waste (and pollution we generate) due to a lack of basic optimization.

If you care about your website’s CO₂ emissions, but still eat meat, you have been greenwashed.

Datacenters already are one of the greenest industries (electricity-wise) and rapidly improving. AWS and Azure will be carbon neutral by 2025. GCP has been neutral for 6 years and will be carbon-free by 2030.

These U.S. Cities Have More Parking Lots Than Housing - They paved paradise again and again and again.
by Frank Jacobs, Big Think May 17, 2024

"...On average, about one-fifth of all land in city centers is dedicated to parking. But what’s the actual harm being done by all that parking space? For one, city centers that are more “parkable” become less walkable. In other words, fewer things are casually accessible.

...Americans’ attitude toward driving is changing. The share of high school seniors with a driving license has dropped from 85.3% in 1996 to 71.5% in 2015. The rise of shared, multi-modal, and (soon, they keep promising us) autonomous mobility will further reduce the need for driver’s licenses, individual cars, and massive parking facilities in city centers.

Perhaps it’s time for American cities to become denser, more lived-in, more walkable—and less “parkable.”
