Electro-engineers of fedi, what #FOSS software can you recommend for developing #hardware?
Mainly looking for circuit design, but interested in anything.
I don't have fancy needs. I don't need circuit simulation. I DO need a proper component catalog and to be able to wire up two things directly without the thing bitching about overlaps or whatever.
Something forcing me to figure out the geometry of all my connections when defining what is connected to what is worse than useless for me.
When Red Hat was a smaller corporation, it was common to see the following quote — attributed to Mahatma Gandhi — used internally and in external marketing:
"First they ignore you.
Then they laugh at you.
Then they fight you.
Then you win."
Interestingly, this quote didn't originate from Gandhi at all. It originated from Nicholas Klein, a trade union activist addressing the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America.
It's an exciting week here in #OpenSource author land. Yesterday was the fifth birthday of my first book, and today my second is available in beta/early release! 🎉
Introducing Business Success with Open Source!
Is your company using open source in any way? (yes, it is)
Does it want to do that in a way that improves the #business while also being good for the #FOSS ecosystem? (yes, it does)
🤩 Aren't you just delighted by all those proprietary software apps for the #Fediverse?
😮 Don't be. Each time you choose proprietary you help turn the fedi slowly in the direction of the usual corporate hellscape that the rest of the Web already is.
😨 And then we end up in an online space where for years we can complain to each other how we squandered an opportunity and how #capitalism won once more.
🎯 Use #FOSS apps instead, created by the public for the public.
Out of 6 languages recommended by the NSA, 4 are patended bvy multibillion comanies who can pull the plug on them at any time (and Oracle already tried that).
C# - PATENTED by Microsoft,
Go - PATENTED by Google
Java - PATENTED by Oracle, NOT FREE
Python - not too shabby
Rust - not too shabby
Swift - PATENTED by Apple
"The output from an LLM is a derivative work of the data used to train the LLM.
If we fail to recognise this, or are unable to uphold this in law, copyright (and copyleft on which it depends) is dead. Copyright will still be used against us by corporations, but its utility to FOSS to preserve freedom is gone."
“Improved build validation, increased moderation, and the long-awaited switch to libappstream” by @barthalion
Heads up to app developers: Flathub’s automatic build validation is more thorough now, and includes checks for issues we previously would have only flagged manually. There’s a chance that if your app has been passing continuous integration checks previously, it will fail now; here's why, and what to do about it:
Have you seen the Stack Overflow Developer Survey results for 2023?
Of the 83,830 folks surveyed, Matrix is the #1 chat tool in terms of current users' satisfaction. It's also rated as the most desirable among the open source tools listed, but there is a lot of room for improvement in awareness there.
They've just launched their funding campaign for it on Crowd Supply, and have immediately blown past their goal, so it seems certain they'll be able to make them. But being totally open source software and hardware, you can also just go make your own!
I said everything is better with a mascot, right? 😁
I learned that Tyson Tan, the artist that, among other things, did the KDE and Krita mascot, also designed a mascot, Libbie, for LibreOffice, but the mascot contest was cancelled because stuff wasn't "professional enough" or something. BUT all his art was available, thus, I took inspiration by this (outdated) project https://github.com/sdomi/libbieoffice and set my own Libbie Splash & Icons with his artwork.
