Electro-engineers of fedi, what software can you recommend for developing ?

Mainly looking for circuit design, but interested in anything.

I don't have fancy needs. I don't need circuit simulation. I DO need a proper component catalog and to be able to wire up two things directly without the thing bitching about overlaps or whatever.

Something forcing me to figure out the geometry of all my connections when defining what is connected to what is worse than useless for me.

Le mois dernier je me suis intéressé aux logiciels #FOSS (libres & open source).
FOSS donc ⤵️:

redhatworkers, to RedHat

When Red Hat was a smaller corporation, it was common to see the following quote — attributed to Mahatma Gandhi — used internally and in external marketing:

"First they ignore you.
Then they laugh at you.
Then they fight you.
Then you win."

Interestingly, this quote didn't originate from Gandhi at all. It originated from Nicholas Klein, a trade union activist addressing the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America.

Photograph of a Red Hat office showing the misattributed quote painted on the wall.

Does it want to do that in a way that improves the while also being good for the ecosystem? (yes, it does)

Then this is the book for you! Check it out!

YES, you can develop, support open source/Free Software (FOSS) projects as an unpaid hobby, just for fun.

YES, you can develop and support projects as (big or small) part of your paid job or as freelancer.

YES, you can develop and support FOSS projects by asking for donations.

And yes, all of these approaches can exist at the same time. YOU decide. FOSS is about freedom, not about money or not.

And NO, you owe no-one an explanation or justification on why you do the way you do.

🤩 Aren't you just delighted by all those proprietary software apps for the #Fediverse?

😮 Don't be. Each time you choose proprietary you help turn the fedi slowly in the direction of the usual corporate hellscape that the rest of the Web already is.

😨 And then we end up in an online space where for years we can complain to each other how we squandered an opportunity and how #capitalism won once more.

🎯 Use #FOSS apps instead, created by the public for the public.

🌻 Keep the Fediverse open.

All Your Base Are Belong to LLM

"The output from an LLM is a derivative work of the data used to train the LLM.

If we fail to recognise this, or are unable to uphold this in law, copyright (and copyleft on which it depends) is dead. Copyright will still be used against us by corporations, but its utility to FOSS to preserve freedom is gone."

“Improved build validation, increased moderation, and the long-awaited switch to libappstream” by @barthalion

Heads up to app developers: Flathub’s automatic build validation is more thorough now, and includes checks for issues we previously would have only flagged manually. There’s a chance that if your app has been passing continuous integration checks previously, it will fail now; here's why, and what to do about it:

Have you seen the Stack Overflow Developer Survey results for 2023?

Of the 83,830 folks surveyed, Matrix is the #1 chat tool in terms of current users' satisfaction. It's also rated as the most desirable among the open source tools listed, but there is a lot of room for improvement in awareness there.

Let's build on this in 2024! 🚀 https://survey.stackoverflow.co/2023/#section-admired-and-desired-synchronous-tools

I said everything is better with a mascot, right? 😁

I learned that Tyson Tan, the artist that, among other things, did the KDE and Krita mascot, also designed a mascot, Libbie, for LibreOffice, but the mascot contest was cancelled because stuff wasn't "professional enough" or something. BUT all his art was available, thus, I took inspiration by this (outdated) project https://github.com/sdomi/libbieoffice and set my own Libbie Splash & Icons with his artwork.

Download and info in reply.

Folder with the LibreOffice shortcuts. Each individual icon has been replaced with a different-coloured depiction of Libbie, each showing the corresponding colours of the original application.

Something that bugs me so much when people complain about the complexity of Mastodon or decentralized services, is that they've done it already.

Email. It's just like fucking email.
You choose a provider, you get an address, and then you share that address with others.

That's it. That's all there's too it.
You change email providers? You share your new address.
