In this week's #Linux, #OpenSource and #Privacy News video, we have #Fedora#KDE proposing to drop X11 when Plasma 6 is out, a nasty vulnerability in #Android and its fingerprint reader implementation, #Meta receiving an enormous $1.3B fine from the EU, and Intel proposing a new x86 architecture that would drop bare metal support for 32 and 16 bit:
The spread of #antibioticresistant#bacteria is reaching new heights, quite literally. A first-of-its-kind study conducted by researchers from Quebec and #France has revealed this kind of bacteria can spread through clouds.
Oh, I see.
However my #Android smartphone also has a virtual/touchscreen keyboard.
You might ask at your local #Apple store. For someone in-the-know, you take your iPad with you
Finally figured out how to play an alarm only through headphones on an #iPhone and NOT through speakers (for example when sleeping on a train and you don’t want to miss your stop but also not annoy others):
Open #iOS#Shortcuts, create an automation with a timer and have it play a music track that’ll wake you up. Turn off “ask before running” and “notify when run”.
Connect your headphones, set a good volume, and have a nap.
(Just don’t forget to disable it or else it’ll go off the next day too)
@esther Thanks! On #Samsung phones you can use a Bixby routine or "Modes and Routines".
For #Android phones in general, there are also third-party apps like Easer and Automation in the #FDroid#FOSS (#FreeAndOpenSource) repository; see f-droid.org .
(Haven't tried those two.)
Or more simply though less musically: you might be able to set a vibrating alarm without sound. 📳🔇
Or the alarm clock might have a setting to vibrate instead of playing sound whenever the phone is on vibrate or silent.
...however an #android, which would classify her to be, is for me a "biorobot" of sorts.
Wiki says "..."artificial person", the eponymous Friday, genetically engineered to be stronger, faster, smarter, and generally better than normal humans. 👉Artificial👈 humans are widely resented..."*
I take artificial as "made from scratch" / "produced" and not just "enhanced," e. g. like...
...(s)he (it?) is not a human being anymore but #humanoid or, at best, an #android.
(Despite her good looks. 😉)
This shows that we will run into all kinds of ethical troubles in the next decades before #overshoot will render these musings mute.
And, no, I gave not read
"Glasshouse" by Charlie Stross, but I should look into it.
(Presently reading "The Origins of Totalitarianism," and am quite dismayed about reality/history.)
Thanks.
#Security#Nerds and #Experts of #Mastodon, I have a #Question for you.
.
.
I am attempting to de-#Google my digital life (as much as is possible at the moment). I got myself an #Android#MobilePhone that does not have Google services installed on it, and I am using #FDroid, #AuroraStore, #APKPure, etc. to get the apps, and using the #AppBrain#AdDetector and #DuckDuckGo's #App#Tracking#Protection (#Beta built into their mobile browser).
.
I am doing my best to use #minimal apps, and only getting ones that are not security focused when necessary. I am not logging into Google, or any other #BigSocial/ #BigData services except when necessary.
.
My question is, are there any #SMS / #Texting apps that allow you to login on the #Web and #sync messages to your phone (even if only on the same network), and a #keyboard that has #VoiceToText that does not use Google or #Microsoft? I am currently using #SwiftKey, but only until I figure out the #T9 app I am using with the KB (HYBRID phone running Android 11).
A cloudy day snap from the "poorest premium phone camera" I reviewed of last year. When even the weakest cameras on our phones can turn out shots like this, I think we're in pretty good shape for mobile photography.
I will unfortunately for the foreseeable future be using an #iPhone as my daily device due to the fact I recently had a heart health scare where I collapsed in March and now we’re thinking it was due to my heart. So I will be purchasing an Apple Watch Series 8 due to it passing FDA and having EKG and other heart sensors over my current series 3. If Samsung, Google or others manage to do this I may completely switch to #Android but for now I’m stuck. #health#medical#infosec
A streaming app with zero ads built in react native with scrapers built in python. NoFasel requires no extra premissons or accounts and is free to use forever
Why is mastodon showing me as having 40 followers and only following 40 people? I follow many more than that. In other news this site still really doesn’t work for me. 😒
Further proof you don't actually own your phone: #Android begs you to delete files you downloaded intentionally to make room for "data" put there automatically by apps. This "data" can be cleared by you, but not without also deleting your logins. You're actively punished for using your #phone.
I hate mtp on #android.
Transfer of photos (~3000 of them or about 15gb of data) took almost 2 hours. The same transfer to SD card takes 20 minutes. Luckily dolphin can resume transfer in case of an error and errors did happen. About 10 of them.
Can you imagine doing the same on windows?
Self-respecting people who care about their #privacy have a difficult time choosing between #ios and #Android, but there's a better option (@GrapheneOS*).
#Android ⚠️ #ATTENTION
Are there any non root Android apps or tools to figure what app scheduled a pending alarm?
On my phone I see alarm icons in the status bar, possibly scheduled at odd times by some astronomy or space app as reminders of celestial events. Yet nothing relevant shows up in their settings. And the alarms never fire.
