Finished The Terror season 1. A grim, gripping series, with impressive art direction and wardrobes, convincing performances, and Ridley Scott as an executive producer. Recommended.
I haven't seen The Terror season 2 (yet) though. It's a separate story, and I noticed that it has received lower ratings. But I enjoyed season 1.
Because it's coming up again - DMs are NOT "PRIVATE messages" they are "Direct Mentions" or "Directed Messages" or something. Think of them like that, please.
Not encrypted, and not secret.
Yes, your administrators could read your DMs, with a little bother. And NO, we don't want to, can't be arsed to, really have better things to do, etc.
Keep in mind, your mail service admins can read your email, too. If you use Gmail, their algorithms are constantly doing so.
There's an important #fediTip#feditips related to this, though, that everyone should remember.
Anyone you MENTION in your DMs can also read that message, so don't think you're sending something private to the person you mentioned first if you tag someone else. Possible even including a link to their post or profile includes them.
If you really want secure and private, exchange phone numbers or use something like Signal maybe. Or go outside, find your friend + a coffee and head to a park.
Okay #FediTips I need some help. I'm on some kind of list for spam, getting hundreds of notifications like this a day -- at first it looked like different accounts from the same server (so I blocked the server), but now I'm seeing it from different accounts on different servers and lots of server blocks later, my notifications are still swamped. What options do I have?
Why aren't pictures loading on my timeline any more? I have to click through to see anything, otherwise I just get the blurs. #FediTips#Masto#Mastodon@trumpet
@Gargron and the team really need to do something about sign-ups on Mastodon in general.
There is no reason why after all of this time that Mastodon doesn't have some kind of captcha or something similar for when users sign up.
This process really needs to be refined and made better, as in, way better, because right now it's absolutely awful and is part of the reason why we're getting these waves of spam bots.
I have blocked a bot that just boosts every post in the TTRPG hashtag, yet it is still able to boost my posts (I can see it in a logged-out browser). Is there a way to force it to stop?
(No one follows it and it gives me false hope when I see a new boost. Yes I have muted it. Yes I'm obsessed with numbers.)
Sakurajima Tip: We know that there has been some drama lately. If you need to ignore it or filter it for some reason, Mastodon and Sharkey has a filtering feature to allow you to control what you see on your timelines.
Filters can be set by going to Preferences and click filters. Click add new filter, select the scope to apply the filter, the behavior (hide with warning or hide completely. Then specify phrases or keywords to hide. They are case sensitive, unless you uncheck the Whole word option.
The same can be done on Sharkey by going to Settings and go to Mute and Blocks. Under Hard word mute, specify phrases you want to hide.
With these filtering features, you can take control of what you want to see and not see on the timeline.
Have multiple accounts. Servers vanish & updates break stuff.
Sync your follows (that's the people you follow).
Don't get enclosed in one implementation (Misskey vs Mastodon) because what matters is the people you meet and how easily can you convey your message.
Misskey forks are ideal for markdown stuff.
Don't prescribe what you use each account for, let the use come to you, you'll end up following some pattern after a while. Officialise your pattern if you want to in a pinned comment (e.g.: I'm using X account for this, Z account for that...feel free to follow either or none).
Admins owe you nothing at all, respect them, they are letting you use their home while they pay the rent.
Tip generously the client software you use, that'll be the difference between motivating the coder to fix, patch, improve it or them letting the project rot.
PRIVACY: Assume anything public is visible from everywhere and that tech bros are milking all your public content as if it was a free gold mine.
PRIVACY: Always set autodelete to the minimum you can. You are not your content, people will recognise YOU by your brain, not the one viral toot you wrote months ago. This isn't virality-powered toxic & commercial social media.
Don't be a reply guy/lady. Think twice about your tone when replying to complete strangers.
Followers-only does not guarantee your toots can't be siphoned by Meta & Co. They could very easily have an employee trying to impress Zucky following you with a bot account just to get your juicy followers-only toots.
Be mindful that Misskey forks don't come (yet) with autodelete.
Assume you'll make mistake and be ready to say "I'm sorry", nobody cares here who was right, only that we LEARN right.
Maintain a VIP list & sync it across accounts. The most interesting thing I've learn from this is I can easily follow a conversation from a different account because I can see the person replying to me on the VIP column (advance mode in Mastodon) from a different account.
I'll edit and write more if they come to mind, feel free to contribute below. #feditips
Today I have a #feditips or #feditip for y'all because it's something it took me waaaaay too long to figure out how to do right. Until Mastodon makes it more clear or automated, here's how you get Lists to work for you:
Dann erscheinen solche Posts in Deiner Timeline. So siehst Du Beiträge zu Themen, die Dich interessieren, auch von Leuten, denen Du (noch) nicht folgst. Auch ein guter Weg, neue Accounts zu finden!
I waited a decade & half? for an edit button on a major corporate media silo (#Twitter). When it finally arrived it required a monthly fee, and by then I had already left some time ago!
There are tons of clever people making things all the time on the #Fedi. This is part of it's strength. The #Fediverse actually innovates much faster and also in more interesting iterations and directions than the monetization driven corporate social media silos. Decisions made for users, are better for users, than decisions made for shareholders.
There are a lot of different interesting front end projects. These let us access our home servers via an app or an alternate webpage front end.
#Icecubes#Mona#Tusky#Elk are a few examples of #Mastodon front end projects. Many of these have some unique features that vanilla webpage Mastodon doesn't yet.
We can always access our servers by just typing their address in to an internet browser to get the regular webpage frontend too.
Everything is all connected, these are just a few examples of additional ways of navigating & experiencing. So we can use several routes, depending on need, mood or device. Regardless of which frontend we use, our account(s) remain the same so it's safe to experiment and try things out. #Help#HelpThread#Welcome#New#Newbies#NewHere#FediTips
