Some people say they don't want to join the Fediverse or Mastodon, because they think the UI sucks. As a front end developer, a designer-kind of a person who creates user interfaces, I agree. Most of the web clients on the Fedi are horrendous, even Mastodon by default. There's lots of room for improvement.

We should really focus on how to make it more pleasing to the eye, more modern and more pleasant. This should not be a nerd network, just for geeks to geek out. This is not IRC or BBS.

As long as Mastodon for instance looks like it's designed by a back end engineer, contains font-awesome icons, looks like 2010, and stuff like that, being open and free is not good reason enough for many. I'm not bashing it, Mastodon is not the worst out there, in fact in my honest opinion Mastodon user experience is far better than Akkoma or Calckey for example. It's also more accessible than many modern UIs, for example my visual impaired wife prefers the Vanilla Mastodon UI over my modifications, she has some small tiny improvements of her own like distinguishing the colors in the action buttons as they have no proper contrast in any of the default themes. But that's it. She likes it as it is. So it cannot be that bad. However, it could be better overall.

doesn't mean the product should look like it's created in a basement by a math teacher. For some people Mastodon UX is sufficient (it even is for me, I like it enough and it doesn't prevent me from using it), but it should be WORLD CLASS. I don't say the answer is but it should be something much more modern and minimal than the current default UI. Pixelfed's developer is a designer oriented, Pixelfed is indeed an example of an awesome Fediverse app experience throughout the web and apps. That is how it should be.

Just my 2 cents.

What's the best place to host a single page client-side app in 2023 on one's own domain with SSL?

Is the answer still “GitHub Pages”, or is there something better?

Question for the @frontend community:

What benefits would you say Web Components have over a framework's components, besides not being tied to a framework?

If there was an element that changes it's content when users interact with other elements on the page, what name would it have?

PLEASE NOTE: I am not suggesting that this element needs to exist; I am only asking what it would be called. I'm building a CustomElement, I just want it to have a name that makes sense.

Vote and suggest others in replies. Please boost for reach!

What are your top features you played with, got excited over as they were supported in one browser... then years passed & support hasn't improved?

Mine:
@property Chrome-only for half a decade
filter() Safari-only since 2015
element() Firefox-only since forever

C++ will be taken over by #Rust.

What will be the Rust-equivalent for #JavaScript?

I mean #TypeScript is a very good first step, but it's basically the C++ for C.

So in short:
C => C++
JavaScript ≈> TypeScript
C++ => #RustLang
JavaScript => ???

I think it will be a looong way to go, but maybe, maybe we'll see more and more #WebAssembly in the #frontend, but not quite sure yet.

#WASM #ProgrammingLanguage #CPlusPlus #C

In HTML, don't use type="number" use type="text" inputmode="numeric" instead.

number silently restricts input, inputmode provides the number keyboard on mobile without any of the downsides.

Error messages are far more helpful than input restriction - this goes for maxlength too

I'm looking for a Senior Frontend Developer / UX Engineer role somewhere people are put first.

I have over 7 years of experience working in the public and private sector.

Specialisms include accessibility and design system architecture (of note I helped ship the GOV.UK Design System).

I'm passionate about building interfaces that work for real people.

I'm at my best when I'm able to influence design and solve problems.

I am London based but looking for remote friendly or hybrid working, so anywhere works!

Please boost for reach :) :boost_ok:

Forget CSS, people don't even know HTML.

Here's why I'm saying this: I've looked through demos made for last week's : https://codepen.io/challenges/2023/june/2 in order to get a better idea of how people want such a control to look and work.

And here are some numbers: 😭

I recently thought about the different ways you can "have" a place in the Internet:

  • Bare metal
  • Dedicated server
  • Virtual Private Server (VPS)
  • Shared Hosting
  • Serverless
  • fly.io
  • Netlify, Vercel, etc

In need of some !

I want my front page to simply be the latest blog posts, showing the post up until the "More" (as in read more) block.

The problem, is that if I show the entire post, it doesn't cut at the more block. And I can't set excepts to be longer than 100 words.

I've tried to edit this last bit my editing functions.php, and by installing the «Advanced Except" plugin.

Any advice? Boost appreciated as well.

Question to #ScreenReader, #LowVision, #blind & #accessibility folks:

How do you feel about duplicate links in articles, blogs, whatever? Meaning: A certain word is a link (let's say "HEALTH") leading to an external website.

Would it annoy you if this word was always a link and it's mentioned for example 20 times in an article? Or would you rather have it only once to make it easier to scan for links?

Is there a related #wcag success criteria?

Challenging question for folks. I have a grid with a header and content, the content is scrollable. I need to add padding that's equal to the height of the header to the content. I need it on the first render as well. I feel like I saw some hackery that allowed something like this, but curious if folks might have any ideas.

The pleasure of finding a new role property, then wondering how best to use it.

Yesterday I found role="mark" in the search for something to indicate to AT that the text is in a highlight panel.

Understand not to over use on page but is this the best role or aria attribute to use?

Thanks!
