Highlights from working the primary election in #Boise yesterday: A woman demanding to know if we were using Dominion voting machines (no), a sweet foreign-born voter who filled in every single square on her ballot (she got it right on her second try), and a man who got really pissed because he couldn’t vote both the Republican and Constitution party ballots. He ended his tantrum by saying “We won’t still have a country by November!” But overall, people were extremely polite. #Idaho#election

I managed to squeeze in one more hike in the #Boise foothills before the weekend crowds descend. Many spring wildflowers and Lark Sparrows along the 6-mile loop kept me entertained. #Idaho#hiking#wildflowers
“'Leave it to the states' is the kind of messaging anti-abortion activists and their judicial helpmates love: It sounds clean, neat, reasonable. But when states enact near-total bans, when the federal government somehow loses its authority to block those bans even when they threaten women with serious illness — as Idaho is pushing for here —"
"The oral arguments over Idaho’s abortion ban and whether it trumps federal law that requires hospitals to give pregnant patients emergency medical case may have marked a new low for this court.
It was so bad that even Justice Amy Coney Barrett said she was 'shocked' by the position Idaho was taking."
[NYTimes]: Justice Alito raises the phrase “unborn child” in the federal emergency care law, suggesting it means “the hospital must try to eliminate any immediate threat to the child, but performing an abortion is antithetical to that duty.” The solicitor general says that the phrase “unborn child” refers to situations in which a pregnant woman goes to an emergency room and her pregnancy is in danger but her own health isn’t in danger. ... #idaho#scotus
[NYTimes]: Justice Sotormayor asks Idaho’s lawyer if it’s true that the state’s ban would prevent abortion in a situation where a woman would otherwise lose an organ or have serious medical complications. Idaho’s lawyer admits it would prevent abortion in those circumstances. “Yes, Idaho law does say that abortions in that case aren’t allowed,” he said. By Pam Belluck
Politico— #Idaho Democrats are running candidates in every state legislative district for the first time in at least 30 years, seeing opportunity in an extreme GOP agenda.
“The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that #Idaho’s ban on #gender-affirming care for #transgender minors can go into effect, overruling a lower court while the long-term constitutionality of the state’s law is still being litigated.”
An #Idaho lawsuit before the #SupremeCourt is challenging #EMTALA, the federal law requiring #hospitals to do "whatever they can to stabilize whoever comes through their ER doors with a medical emergency."
This has profound implications for #abortion care, and for this week's Amicus podcast, Dahlia Lithwick interviewed Dr. Dara Kass, an ER physician, about what's at stake.
375,000 NATIVE ANIMALS KILLED by One Program in 2023
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's notorious #WildlifeServices program just put out its required tally of #killings for last year: 375,045 native animals. The federal extermination program targets a long list of wild creatures, chiefly at the behest of #agricultural interests in states like #Texas, #Colorado and #Idaho.
According to the report — which almost surely understates the actual numbers —
NEW: #Idaho Supreme Court upholds the state's ban on using student IDs to vote, dismissing a lawsuit alleging that the rule violates young voters’ right to equal protection and right to vote under the Idaho Constitution.
After Decades of Imprisoning #Patients, #Idaho Approves Secure Mental Health Facility
The Idaho Legislature has approved funding for a 26-bed facility after ProPublica found that state lawmakers and officials ignored repeated warnings about the practice of locking up mentally ill patients who hadn’t been convicted of a #crime.
My sisters are my heroes, including the one that made this sign for a protest tonight. The Idaho “Freedom” Foundation is an extremely heinous and harmful group. #Idaho
This Influential #Conservative Group Is Making it Harder for #Idaho Districts to Fix Their Schools
The Idaho Freedom Foundation has gone beyond the #education culture wars by targeting local bond and levy #elections, which districts rely on heavily to build and repair #schools.
