https://mapstodon.space is approaching its first anniversary: the instance opened its doors on Nov. 4th, 2022!
From hinc sunt dracones one year ago, the contours of our carto community seem quite mapped now as there are 1965 users registered. How cool is that 🎉
Should we try to make it 2000 in 15 days? We'll celebrate anyway, but the challenge is fun! Let's bring those bluebird latecomers over to the mammoth! 🐦🛤🐘
I've finally done it. This is the moment you've all been waiting for. Please welcome to the map style...
TRAIN TRACKS!
A lot of other maps use a light grey line for trains, and in some (coughGooglecough) it's hard to tell what they even are. So I decided to take a different approach and give them their own color. Also unlike most other maps, I gave distinct styles to light and heavy rail.
Take a look at your nearest station and let me know how I did!
And to be honest, I'm quite in awe by the growing quality of the timeline.
It keeps maturing and is now an open window on a rich and diverse content focused around cartography and geospatial, with its fair share of freshening off-topic posts.
Thank you all for your presence and for sharing such interesting stuff! Can't wait for the next 8 months!
Just had another wow moment while checking https://mapstodon.space's timeline: so much rich and diverse content, in many different languages, with a fresh and spontaneous balance between on-topic and off-topic conversations, and nothing but good vibes all around!
Thanks to everyone for making our little corner of the internet friendlier and more interesting everyday :)
I just found out that an engraving on a 27000 years old mammoth tusk, from the Gravettian culture, was considered by some as a map - making it the oldest known to date.
Imagine … taking a train from Brantford to Goderich … or from Glencoe to Strathroy … or from Palmerston to Elora … or, well, to just about anywhere (CN passenger rail system 1958) #transit#trains#urbanism#maps#mapstodon#transport#ontario
Some months ago I posted a 🗺️ story I wrote about how we all carry a map inside. Little did I know this would get me my own personalised #SplashMap and that I would get invited to a podcast about maps! Maps! Thank you @geomob, thank you #mapstodon for hosting such a friendly community.
This is the podcast episode https://thegeomob.com/podcast/episode-219@stevenfeldman really made me think about why I did what I did... And if you want to tell me about your own inner map, please tell me all about it here 🙂
