Fascinating how #Threads by #Meta is hitting nearly 100 million users in such a short time.
Watching some of the algorithm churn to your feed it's clear it's pushing celebrities and brands.
It's a little sad that people and organisations have jumped on Threads so quickly when ignoring or hardly posting on #Mastodon, but if.. and I mean IF Meta fulfil their promise and truly join the #fediverse, then we can follow those same people as we wish without a Threads account, ads or loss of privacy.
One of the fun things about #Mastodon is that I don't have to follow anyone when I'm on an interesting instance.
It doesn't really make sense for me to follow someone with that account. But with the mstdn.games local timeline, I still see relevant and interesting #Gaming posts all the time. That's great!
I know I'm becoming a better #mastodon user when I see some recent #twitterMigration account carry over engagement farming garbage like "who's with me?" and rather than reply to let them know how gross that is, I just block and move on 😏
This is a fascinating piece of technology from #Ellipal which is a BIP39 offline seed generator for 12-24 words. Which has always been a point of question I had with many #cryptocurrency wallets and I think offline generation is best especially for phone wallets. I'll get more into it on #tiktok and #twitch and post it as well to #peertube if i can remember #infosec#cybersecurity
There is a link in my bio to ellipal if you're interested in the item I'm reviewing above. It will be in the Cryptocurrency section under Hardware Any purchases help support my #fediverse hosting costs and content creation #mastodon#streamer
OK fine my resolve to stay away from #Threads lasted all of 2 days. When I realised it was available in #Malaysia I decided to sign up to execute a spying mission for the #Fediverse. 🤭
Apparently Asia doesn't care about privacy and data the way EU does so #Meta has boldly released it to us.
Anyway the good stuff: I can see the people I follow.
Ps: Yes I follow a lot of #cats. Can you blame me?
Conclusion: My brain imploded after a mere 10 seconds.
I have gotten too used to controlling my feed on #Mastodon and #Threads makes me puke in my mouth a little.
That's enough navel gazing for the day.
Still dislike it with the fires of a thousand suns.
@liztai that's true... It would be great to keep the fediverso free of nonsense content. I see a lot of nonsense content at #threadsapp, it becomes really boring. I love #mastodon
I’m probably sticking with #Mastodon until there’s a more stable server available, but #Calckey is pretty awesome. Longer limits, betters lists, antennae (sorta like extra, tuneable timelines), and MARKDOWN! And still compatible with all the same #Fediverse/#ActivityPub services. And you can even migrate your follows, pretty cool.
I also love my particular instance, #SocialCoop for more than just tech reasons, so I’d probably not just leave here for markdown, but it’s been cool to check out.
Giving #kbin a shot. I used both reddit and twitter, so it's nice to have access to both reddit style federated content such as #lemmy and microblogging like #mastodon with just one account. Plus I joined early enough on the https://www.fedia.io instance that I could get a username that's short and too the point. Pretty cool so far 😀
Here are meta-results: the engagement on Twitter, Threads and Mastodon for my last post about engagement on Twitter, Threads and Mastodon. Now with more Excel features!
@alex OK sure but do we really want the corporate behemoths to continue to control social media? Are we going to chase the shiny dopamine-inducing object? I will stay on #mastodon.
Notice how "This airline screwed me" posts just don't fly on Mastodon? Yes, accidental, silly pun but there is something about this place that bitching just don't work as well. I think this is good? Yet there are things to be done in this world so I still want information, insights, and paths to action. Just saying the "OMG factor" seems dialed down.
@thomasfuchs
I have a slightly different take. Shaming is VERY relative. Your shaming is my abuse. One of the original attractions I had for #Mastodon was that it made shaming much harder than Twitter. There is room to discuss relaxing those rules but this whole experience has shown how systemically making shame harder can have real effects on the community.
After only two months after the release on #flathub the OpenAndroidInstaller #flatpak installs surpassed the number of other downloads! 🤩 I hope you're all having fun with it while we are working on the next release 😊 #customROMs#lineageos#android#foss
This is an important PSA for folks looking to make any place more inclusive. Do you want to be liked by everyone? Or do you want to make progress?
I don't know anyone that has both been successful in transforming a non-inclusive place, and hasn't been accused of sounding hostile.
It takes a huge amount of energy to dance on eggshells, and I don't have time to do it. So I don't. I'm a big boy. I crack sidewalks when I walk. So eggshells would have no chance anyway. 🤷🏿♂️
@mekkaokereke really good points here. Something important to most organizations that got on the Bird Site was the blue check, right? It identified them as being "really" that org or person.
On #Mastodon & #Lemmy every org or person has the opportunity to start their own instance and federate with everybody. What higher level of control & verification of their identity & message could there be?
Let's portray the #fediverse correctly: an opportunity for people & orgs to control their identity & message on the #Internet without relying on Zuck, Dorsey, or Musk or any for profit to provide that control. They'll join up in droves.
I'd expect every government, corporation, non profit, & wealthy celebrity to hire a Fediverse ... guy, buy a server, and get federated. Probably cheaper than whatever they're spending on social media people. Smaller groups could band together for the same purpose. The Fediverse offers control in a way these other sites just can't.
Hello. I torpedoed my Mastodon server by accident, so all my old toots are gone, as well as my follower list. If you were following me, though, I think you still are (yay for decentralisation).
@grace Fascinating #Mastodon#federation question. Assuming you didn't issue a self-destroy, the remote instances will still have records of following you, but how can your instance actually send them the posts if it doesn't remember about it any more? Does it matter whether someone else on those instances follow you?
