We need to have a talk
on #Mastodon about how people will never be fully free to change instances until they can also import their previous posts/toots to their new instance.
This would likely be a game-changer feature for many :mastodon:🔁:mastodon:
Here are the best Mastodon apps for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
'Mastodon has seen a big spike in new users over the last week as people look for new social network options. One of the great things about Mastodon is the thriving ecosystem of third-party apps for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users. Head below as we round up some of our favorites'
#Threads site drops soon. What is your #Meta hot take? PS, no bad faith arguments about their data harvesting practices, youll just get blocked. If I wanted my data sold, I can sell it myself. It's MY data to sell
I will still fail to understand why people are willing to flirt with platforms such as Bluesky and/or (potentially) Threads.
The Fediverse in general isn't perfect, no one should claim that it is. However, if you are willing to take the time to evaluate the instance that you sign up on, then you can expect to be protected most of the time.
It wasn't a random decision to jump over to tech.lgbt after mastodon.lol fell by the wayside.
I was looking for the following:
An LGBT related server that had healthy membership numbers
Permissive but fair policies
Responsible with their defederation list
Protective of their users
Signed up to the covenant
I believe that this instance 99.9% of the time gets these things right. My time here has been an overwhelmingly pleasant experience.
This place+fediverse may not attract the same numbers that corporate social media does. However, I really don't care, all the people I want to interact with are right here!
Ok, this was a ton of work, but I finally salvaged the #Bluesky threads, posted on my old account (on the #Mastodon instance that shut down in June) and put a reconstructed version of them on my blog:
Someone I know elsewhere asked me to explain #threads and #meta and even wondered if threads was just a #mastodon front end - and also what all the drama was about:
il sunto: mi sento di consigliare a tutti gli utenti di mastodon.uno la migrazione verso altre istanze.
Nelle mie intenzioni, questo thread sarà l'ultimo a trattare l'argomento, che non mi andava di riaprire ma sentivo di fare (nel post spiego meglio il perché)
Alright, I must admit, this is a nice move by @Gargron and the other main developers. Thank you for sending this email out for those who may not see or hear about the news.
Hey, I just wanted to also publicly (federatedly?) announce that the registrations on DragonsCave.space have recently reopened! So if you'd like to be on a cool #Mastodon instance full of disabled folks, with a cool name, and which calls posts "roars", here's your chance!
We've been invite-only for a while now. The last influx of Twitter users overwhelmed us eventually. But since we've now had a third admin for a bit (she's absolutely awesome! We love you, @Estrella !), we'll hopefully be able to handle the extra activity this change might bring.
Edit: But anyone signing up is still expected to read the rules first! If you don't prove you have, there is a very high chance we'll reject you!
To all Black people who read this: these bastard cops are obviously wrong when they unlawfully arrest us—AND…WE MUST STOP ARGUING WITH THEM. PLEASE. If we remain alive(!) we can always take it up with attorneys later. Yes, I know: whether we comply or not we STILL get killed. #LASD#California#BlackMastodon#Mastodon
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept releases bodycam video of their violent assault of a Black senior citizen outside a grocery store. @alfro352 Hello , saw your message from live feed. To search use #Mastodon or something you enjoy. Same with your messages if you introduce yourself #自己紹介 and add your hobbies, then people who will look for similar hobbies will see your message! Good luck exploring Mastodon!
There's very little privacy on the fediverse today. Mastodon and other fediverse software wasn't designed and implemented with privacy in mind. Even the underlying #ActivityPub protocol that powers the fediverse has major limitations. But it doesn't have to be that way!
Meta's new #Threads product means that it's critical for the fediverse to start focusing more on privacy. Of course, #Meta's a threat in many other ways as well; that said, the privacy aspects are important too.
For one thing, if Meta does indeed follow through on its plans to work with #Mastodon instance admins and others "partners" who to monetize their users (and their data), people in the region of the fediverse that's not Meta-friendly will need stronger privacy protections to protect their data. And Meta's far from the only threat to privacy out there; changes that reduce the amount of data Meta can gather without consent will also help with other bad actors.
More positively, there's also a huge opportunity here. Privacy's even worse on Facebook and Instagram than it is in the fediverse. So If the fediverse can provide a more private alternative, that will be hugely appealing to a lot of people.
Any way you look at it, now's a good time for the fediverse to take privacy more seriously.
The bulk of the article focuses on threat modeling, a useful technique for identifying opportunities for improvement. It's a long article, though, so if you don't want to wallow in the details, feel free to skip ahead to the section at the end on the path forward and the specific recommendations.
And if you're already bought in to the idea that the #fediverse
should focus more on privacy, and just want to know how you can help make it happen, it also suggests specific actions you can take -- and there's a section with some thoughts for #MastoAdmin

This is still a draft, so as always feedback is welcome. And thanks to everybody for the feedback on previous drafts!
Couldn’t any instance or app do this already? Like #peertube does videos in a way that isn’t necessarily fully federated with #mastodon. We get partial functionality everywhere and some places will have some extra things. If it is popular enough, then add it to the standard and let everyone who wants it add the functionality.
I'm working on https://schizo.social again. There's still tons of basic client stuff I could work on, like logout, or rendering boosts, but my goal is to build a client for managing multiple #Fediverse accounts; things like syncing following/mutes/etc. Not really trying to build a client you'd use to read. I want to implement #Calckey login, but calckey.social is down. Maybe I should start with handling multiple #Mastodon accounts first? #schizoSocial
I want the thumbnails to open the full version in a modal, with next/prev arrows to navigate between multiple images attachments.
I'll probably use a <dialog> but I kinda wonder if there's a way for me to shoe horn a #viewTransition into this cause I want to play with the #ViewTransitions#API.
Maybe clicking the date can open an individual post, and I can use a #ViewTransitionAPI to navigate to that...
#Threads will not interact or be otherwise integrated with #ActivityPub for some while
"“Soon, you’ll be able to follow and interact with people on other fediverse platforms, such as #Mastodon. They can also find people on Threads using full usernames, such as @mosseri.”"
Note: "soon"
A whole hell of a lot of people got this all wrong, mostly because it's a hot dopamine fix to push the idea and get tons of Boosts on it
