Ok, here's a great internet find: @spacehey is an old school MySpace-inspired social network. It's a total blast from the past with layout, autoplay music, and visual headaches.
This thing Facebook did — running an MITM on Snapchat and other competitors’ TLS connections via their Onavo VPN — is so deeply messed up and evil that it completely changes my perspective on what that company is willing to do to its users.
I did a SpaceHey. Not sure what this profile is going to be like yet, but feel free to add me if you're on there. Feeling a bit like returning to the old MySpace days and trying to force myself to ramp up my digital creativity, so yeah.

@seachanger I've been wanting the #fediverse place to succeed for years 5 years prior to the twitter migration. My biggest driver was I was sick and tired of the evil that for-profit social media produces. #Zuck alone is responsible for the rise of 5 fascist leaders and 2 genocides. I was tired of them creating something based on community and connections and once they went public, killing all those things and slowly replacing it with showing ads and content in your face and making it impossible to see anything people you actually followed had to say. The people I follow and interact with now are the same as #myspace and #facebook before they went public, a league of extraordinary nobodies with genuine posts and not one's being as cheap, vapid and shallow as they have to be to appease the now non-existent algorithm to get famous or have "cred". Everyone is being their genuine awkward selves here. No one is hyper polished to the point of faking it. That creates vulnerability that makes real community thrive
Your job is not to defeat the Nazi in the marketplace of ideas. We already did that. Your job is not to persuade them, or convert them, that comes later, and is on their heads. Your job is to make them afraid. Afraid to be a Nazi in public. To speak Nazi. To do Nazi things. —Make Nazis afraid again.
This week on my #podcast, I read "Let the Platforms Burn," a recent @medium column making the case that we should focus more on making it easier for people to leave platforms, rather than making the platforms less terrible places to be:
If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this thread to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
> When I started seeing the disappearance of emotionally sticky nodes, I reached out to members of the MySpace team to share my concerns and they told me that their numbers looked fine. Active uniques were high, the amount of time people spent on the site was continuing to grow, and new accounts were being created at a rate faster than accounts were being closed.
I'm getting in on this hot new social network I keep hearing about. 70M users can't be wrong! Please do add me as your friend. You won't not be disappointed.
(#SpaceHey is an early #MySpace clone by a young student in Germany that is amusing the hell out of me. Wait, what social network did you think I was talking about?)
For those who remember MySpace, a dude made a full clone of it that WORKS and looks the same (and is pretty epic) over at https://spacehey.com. Check out some of those profiles! Wild. 🤣
I don't remember everyone sitting around navel gazing about which one would "win". We didn't need everyone to be in one place. We were all early adopters. We could handle using more than one website. All you normies need to chill out, let people try new things, quit trying to pick the winner. It's not a race.
