Why only 7?
Why so little?
Why so late?
ETA of the "flotilla"?
The global economy and its consumers are still suffering from the highest #inflation in rececent decades, caused by the #Pandemic and the #Russian aggression in #Ukraine.
Why yes, I AM still getting deluged by trolls who are intentionally calling me Pro Genocide after my earlier post.
Thanks for asking.
Adding: I did not take a stand on anything other than to stop calling Biden "pro genocide," and saying that disagreement with his policies is fine by me & that I don't discuss that war in my feed... because of... this kind of reaction by trolls and others who are trolls in training, apparently.
#GeoPol
Oops, I do take stands against or pro both sides, as I feel appropriate.
The subject is too important and the conflict helps #Russia, #Iran, and the #Houthis, among others,
and makes matters worse for the #Palestinians, the #Jewish people globally, and the #Ukrainians, in particular.
Panama Canal #Drought Impacts Drug Traffickers’ Logistics
"A fall in traffic through the #PanamaCanal resulting from a lack of rainfall could affect the distribution chain of trafficking networks that use this maritime corridor to move drug shipments."
“Due to the El Niño phenomenon, the average accumulated rainfall in the watershed for 2023 is 25.6% lower than the average rainfall of the last 73 years,” according to the Panama Canal Authority on October 3.
With the prospect (already) of a pre-Christmas slow down in consumption (and potential #recession in the new year), #manufacturers are now facing a #supplychain crisis....
not only is the #SuezCanal already at risk due to attacks on shipping approaching the canal ('encouraging' some shippers to take longer, more expensive & slower routes), now the #panamacanal has been hit be a drought that is severely constraining its capacity.
There's going to be a lot more friction in global supply chains
For #FensterFreitag here's a view through the centre of the control tower of the Agua Clara locks on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal, taken a couple of weeks ago. The modern control tower itself is built with an eye for brutalism so it immediately appealed to me, and I was very pleased when we cruised through the lock to catch this view of it from our balcony.
#FossilFuel burning ships carrying fossil fuels need to burn a lot more fossil fuels because a canal dried up by the burning of fossil fuels is in the way of those fossil fuels getting to where they will be burned.
Okay then.
"Liquefied natural gas shippers increasingly are opting to travel up to two weeks longer and almost 6,000 nautical miles further to bypass the #PanamaCanal as transporters of other fuel pay nearly $4 million to jump the long queue."
"The possibility of a canal bottleneck turning into the “Pinch that stole Christmas” should be a catalyst for buyers, manufacturers and shipping companies to reassess their whole approach to supply and logistics. Centralising manufacturing and piling products into ever-larger ships makes less sense if transport bottlenecks diminish economies of scale."
"Unprecedented congestion at the #PanamaCanal could ultimately result in delays at Egypt’s Suez Canal, potentially affecting cargoes of liquefied natural gas, according to a top official at Greek shipping giant Angelicoussis Group."
"More than 40% of consumer goods traded between north-east Asia and the US east coast are transported through the #PanamaCanal.
In normal times, the Panama Canal has capacity to handle 36 ships a day. But as water has grown scarcer, the canal authority has reduced that number to 22. By February, it will be just 18."
The Forth and Clyde Canal in the north of Glasgow. Designed by John Smeaton and constructed between 1768 and 1790, it allowed goods and ships to move from the North Sea to the North Atlantic without having the pass through the treacherous waters along the North of Scotland. It was the world's first man-made sea-to-sea canal, making it the forerunner of canals like the Suez Canal and the Panama Canal.
Several ships are stranded at both ends of the #PanamaCanal due to #water#conservation measures during a severe drought. Vessel-tracking data shows over 200 ships are waiting to transit due to the canal's reduced daily limit of 32, down from the usual average of 36. The waterway’s entrances on the Pacific and Atlantic oceans are dotted with ships that have been backed up for more than 20 days. #climatechangehttps://youtu.be/t9Z4lNWmrX4
Sure there are fires on beautiful islands (#Maui, #Tenerife), #hurricanes headed to the desert SW US (#Hilary), and entire cities being evacuated due to #wildfires (#Yellowknife), but is your package from Amazon running late? That may be #ClimateChange as well - drought has lowered the level of water in the #PanamaCanal mandating ship's carry fewer containers and fewer ship's pass through the canal every day.
This is what #adaptation looks like - not tech solutions, nor panel discussions, nor sweeping new laws; rather a slow interruption of our cultural norms perforated with complete upheaval of our lives. Adaptation will be multi-generational (meaning civilization will degrade over generations) if don't start to #mitigate and #multisolve soon.
