If you only read one article this year, it has to be THIS by @Mer__edith, the president of #signal :
"AI is a marketing term, not a technical term of art. [...]
This is also why it’s imperative that we recognize mass surveillance – and ultimately the surveillance business model – as the root of the large-scale tech we’re currently calling “AI”."
"Lavender applies the logic of the pattern recognition-driven signature strikes popularized by the US ... with the mass surveillance infrastructures and techniques of #AI ... Instead of serving ads, Lavender automatically puts people on a kill list based on the likeness of their surveillance data patterns to the data patterns of purported militants – a process that ... is hugely inaccurate. Here we have the AI-driven logic of ad targeting, but for killing." @Mer__edithhttps://www.helmut-schmidt.de/aktuelles/detail/die-rede-der-zukunftspreistraegerin
:quotesL: Because we leverage Microsoft’s #Bing technology to power some parts of this feature, the Microsoft Privacy Statement will apply to any personal data you may input into the input box for the AI-powered takeaways feature, as well as any personal data included in any Bing provided results :quotesR:
"There’s standard Silicon Valley hubris in the ‘move fast and break things’ mold, and then there’s whatever this is
"Trying to steamroll one of the most famous movie stars alive, one who is notably not afraid to take Disney to court (and win), and then lying to everyone about it ... well that’s another level altogether.”
AI story: one of my peers used chatGPT to help her write a presentation and we saw lots of errors. She will no longer use an #AI. Lesson learned 🥸👏 AI are garbage for research
#AI and #MachineLearning models are shifting a number of core assumptions on which the various Web stakeholders have been relying on for years.
In this presentation at the @w3c member meeting in #Hiroshima 🇯🇵, @dontcallmeDOM reviews the systemic impact and possible mitigation the Web community should consider to ensure the long term prosperity of the #Web in the face of these changes.
The reason the billionaires, governments, and corporations are trying to make Generative “#AI” fetch happen is because #ModelExplainability doesn’t exist.
They don’t want to foment transparency, accountability, or individual agency.
Yesterday, I replied to a question in the Godot forum with a wrong answer (since I misunderstood the question at first). Today, if you google "godot delete pattern", that answer will be displayed as a "featured snippet" right on top. 🙄 (The correct answer is in the same thread, but so far Google hasn't picked up on it)
I think #Microsoft's #recall feature is such an interesting case study of #AI, for what it stands for, the reactions to it, its potential, and what underlies it in the end. Even more so, it's a fascinating case study in how small interventions (and yes, I think it's a rather small intervention) can have much bigger and weirder effects than we think.

This tiny PC is now packing the most powerful laptop chip AMD makes!
Funnily enough, Microsoft threw AMD and Intel under the bus.
NONE of the current selling "AI" PCs qualify for the "CoPilot" branding.
Who knows, maybe you don't want that new Microsoft Recall feature on your system anyway?
Generate a photorealistic image of two adult women, one of Caucasian descent and the other of South Asian descent, both engaged in the action of sharing a joint. They both are dressed in casual clothing, having a relaxed vibe around them. Embellish the image with a psychedelically enhanced colourful mosaic background giving it a surreal, dream-like atmosphere. #AI#GenerativeAI#OpenAI#BigTech#SiliconValley: "Company documents obtained by Vox with signatures from Altman and Kwon complicate their claim that the clawback provisions were something they hadn’t known about. A separation letter on the termination documents, which you can read embedded below, says in plain language, “If you have any vested Units ... you are required to sign a release of claims agreement within 60 days in order to retain such Units.” It is signed by Kwon, along with OpenAI VP of people Diane Yoon (who departed OpenAI recently). The secret ultra-restrictive NDA, signed for only the “consideration” of already vested equity, is signed by COO Brad Lightcap.
Meanwhile, according to documents provided to Vox by ex-employees, the incorporation documents for the holding company that handles equity in OpenAI contains multiple passages with language that gives the company near-arbitrary authority to claw back equity from former employees or — just as importantly — block them from selling it.
Those incorporation documents were signed on April 10, 2023, by Sam Altman in his capacity as CEO of OpenAI."
“If you’re looking to understand the philosophy that underpins Silicon Valley’s latest gold rush, look no further than #OpenAI’s #ScarlettJohansson debacle”
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Act at work. In addition to clean energy solutions being good for the planet, low-income and minority communities typically bear the brunt of everyone else’s pollution and also rely on public transportation the most.
