Shout out to @nigelharpur for buying my two songs on Bandcamp yesterday! I was having a day full of frustration and self-doubt as I work on my latest track. Thank you so much for reminding me why I do this; you made me feel like a rock star.
I don’t know how to feel about the #Bandcamp situation. It certainly doesn’t decrease my disdain for Epic Games, and I’m disgusted by Songtradr’s stance of “supporting the band camp community is our top priority but let’s fire half the staff.”
But what’s the alternative? Isn’t it the only well-known music platform that doesn’t screw over musicians? Are there other places where I can launch a vinyl release for no upfront cost? Control my pricing?
The whole SongTradr thing is not sitting well with me, but BC is the only place I release and I have no real contingency. Self hosting sounds like a nightmare, but perhaps that's where we are headed?...
It's after 10pm here on a Saturday night, and my music-finding post is finally done and posted! ⚡
I know we all find music in different ways, and I wanted to write a bit on it. These are my methods and tools. Comment away on your own methods and tools-- I'd love to see everyone else's process, too!
I’ve got a day off tomorrow, so instead of banging on about my music, I’m going to stay up late listening to yours.
If you’re an #indiemusician on #bandcamp or #soundcloud and you have a toot with a track you’d like to promote, link your toot in the comments and I’ll give it a boost.
[edit: If you’re a musician or songwriter here on Mastodon and have your music somewhere else, please share a link! This is about the artists and their music, not any platform!]
What would a decentralized #fediverse#BandCamp service look like? I'll obviously support bandcamp until the bitter end and I hope it ends up fine and this is all nothing to worry about. But I think it's an interesting question.
I have some ideas but I'm interested in hearing from others.
I hadn't heard of cranes til I stumbled across them on Bandcamp the other day. Their new stuff is too light/airy for my tastes, but these Peel Sessions from 1989-1990 that release in a few days-- the two songs up so far.. wow. I LOVE her voice.. the great kinda minimal music behind it, reminds me of Björk a little sometimes, but maybe with SLIGHTLY more edge and more 80s-ish guitar. Check it out, let me know what you think.
oh god Songtradr’s takeover of #Bandcamp has ended up being way worse than anyone expected much more quickly. tl;dr: Songtradr isn’t honoring the union, has locked out employees from critical systems, and is basically trying to steamroll everyone in the handoff.
Thanks, #BandCamp, for many years of connecting me to bands and musicians. I happily spent a lot of money on your platform. Now that Epic has sold you to songtradr which immediately fired half your staff, I will delete my account after I finished downloading all the music I bought over the years. So long and thanks for all the fun!
Channels on Funkwhale can be followed from Mastodon, anyone can start their own server.
Given the situation with #Bandcamp, perhaps Funkwhale might be a basis for an alternative? (I'm not a musician so I don't know how good a fit it is for artists and bands, but hope it is useful or could be developed?)
Who's got music they want me to check out? Send me your links!
Up to 15 mins worth of music, hosted on a service that allows payments and/or messages directly to the artists (self hosted, #Bandcamp, #Faircamp, @mirlo, jam.coop, SoundCloud, YouTube, etc but NOT Spotify, Tidal etc).
Oh and you have to follow me in some respect (I'll follow back! Looking for community, not "fans" or whatever).
Got home late enough from work night out that I didn't even listen to yesterday's taalem advent before just buying it and going to bed. But I'm sitting listening to today's advent entry now - "infidel part 2" by Nullkommajosefh, which hits a good number of my particular sound buttons. Drifty, tinge of noise, stray elements of mystery. #bandcamp#taalem#advent#NameYourPrice#drone#ambient#experimental#noise
HEY YOU! BACK TO LONDON IS OUT NOW:)
Just when I'm about to leave London. I'd like this optimism to carry onto my new path, and hope it can accompany the listener in their path. This song is a lullaby to calm down a scared and excited heart, a love song to new beginnings.
Solidarity alert! #Bandcamp has been sold to #Songtradr, and Songtradr's CEO has not recognized the the #BandcampUnited union and is not promising to offer jobs to all current employees.
