Did you know that Britain is starting to install power cables from solar farms in the Sahara to their island nation? Well, now you do
The ship that is going to install that 10,000 miles of cable isn't even built yet though so it's going to take some time to do at 100 miles at a time once the ship's constructed and the cables are manufactured
Anyways, that's quite a commitment to procuring clean electrons. I expect the cable factory and the ship end up being good investments
Germany is getting closer to starting to pump CO2 underground to keep it out of our already polluted atmosphere.
Habeck, a member of the environmentalist Green party, recalled opposition to carbon storage when it was discussed in the 2000s. But he said “the technology has been developed further ... and from my point of view it is mature and safe," and that it is now being used elsewhere, not just in research projects.
This was published on March 1, 2024, which is in the future.
Consider yourself lucky, time traveler!
But actually, #CarbonCapture is bullshit, and subsidies for captured carbon for enhanced recovery will soon breathe new life into fracking that uses CO2 instead of water. A company in the Southern Tier of NY is trying to do that now.
My latest story, a long time in the making, is finally out so head over to Pellicle Mag and see what a "delicious, crisp, refreshing, weird apple-y beer" has to do with carbon capture and alcohol-free brewing.
"#Shell’s Massive #CarbonCapture Plant Is Emitting More Than It’s Capturing
A new Global Witness report found that it has the same carbon footprint per year as 1.2 million gas-powered cars."
“The #PathwaysAlliance has not provided our #FirstNations with any reports or data assessing the potential risks associated with the storage of carbon adjacent to and beneath our reserve lands,” says an Oct. 13 letter from the First Nations to Pathways.”
But read the small print and 400m tCO2e is a carbon capture fantasy.
As Greenpeace have put it, “While it sounds like a big number, this target uses some creative accounting with promised carbon capture to hide much lower actual emission cuts”
I know, I needed to edit this post for adhering better to the #PascalCase convention.
Also, it fit in nicely with my re-boost today of the #BigOil fiasco background, inspired by the new allegations that even 👉#Shell's #CarbonCapture plant might be a complete fraud, as it possibly even emits way more #GreenhouseGases than it captures!👈
We call for the development of a new restorative pathway scenario. It would involve significantly bending not just some, but all of the curves in figure 1 with a minimal need to rely on #CarbonCapture technologies. The scenario would also focus on reducing the consumption of primary resources to keep environmental pressures within planetary boundaries."
For the record, Hugo Drax was the name of the billionaire #JamesBond villain in #Moonraker whose solution was to kill off most of humanity and send his chosen few into space
Drax will extract money from consumers & taxpayers (yes, often the same people), for their massive roll-out of a at-best un-proven technology in the fight against #climatechange; no doubt boosted by #COP28's championing of this elaborate con.
This is a relatively thorough account of everything that is bad/will go wrong about plans for carbon capture in inland #California and yet it's presented in the context of, they're doing it anyway
Will storing CO2 in old oil fields slow global warming? First #California plan nears approval
"At least two earlier versions of the proposal planned to capture CO2 and inject it inside aging oil wells to flush out more petroleum. In 2022, however, the state Legislature passed a bill banning #CarbonCapture projects from boosting oil production."
But there are still risks around leaks and pipeline ruptures, especially near population centers.
When I worked in a coal-fired power plant as a teen, I saw them strip mine the #Alberta prairies. The bottom ash, and some of the fly ash would be hauled back to the pit before being covered over. I think of that process when I see #bigoil talk about #carboncapture. After burning everything in sight, they try to capture some of it and bury the remains, and say “good as new”. There are better ways. Our goal should be to disturb nature as little as possible.
