Cambridge claims that using recycled cement as flux in steel furnaces (which can use recycled steel and renewable electricity), the resulting slag becomes Portland cement again, usable in concrete. This can reduce global co2 emissions by 7.5%. https://www.cam.ac.uk/stories/cement-recycling

Can older gamedev share some wisdom on how crunch manifest in the early 90-00s era?

These days crunch feels like a “feature” of game industry:

  • yes, by market cap we are definitely one of the biggest video game companies.

  • but even within it, your choice is to either crunch to meet increasingly difficult deadline;

  • or see your project cancelled in 2-4 years, then either continue on with other big projects or get layoff.

Are the 90s’ crunch different?

obviousdwest,
@obviousdwest@hachyderm.io avatar

@bitinn I disagree w the third bullet. Companies w good product processes that avoid burning out their staff will outlive those that constantly crunch. A healthy long-lived game studio is not a single sprint to a single launch, it must be multiple titles over years. And you can’t afford to lose successful teams by pushing them too hard. Plus better team members will be able to choose studios that don’t suck like that. Thereby making those studios more successful.

This driverless Waymo came to a full stop in the bike lane ahead of us, even though there was plenty of space in the passenger loading zone a few feet away. I waited to see if the Waymo would ever pull into the loading zone, but I got tired of waiting after 5 minutes.

A photo taken showing the front of a Waymo that is currently parked in a bike lane. The Waymo is in the bike lane, but there is an empty space a few feet away from the Waymo that is painted with a white strip (indicating it is a 10 minutes passenger loading zone). The LCD screen on the top of the Waymo shows the letters "JC", which is the name of the passenger it is picking up.

    Honestly, the Supreme Court justices today sounded even more deranged and clueless than I even expected. They are just too worried about hypothetical future presidents to focus on the fact that we have a former president indicted for attempting to overthrow an election who is now running for reelection on an explicitly authoritarian, anti-democracy platform. 1/

    obviousdwest,
    @obviousdwest@hachyderm.io avatar

    @heidilifeldman You used the word courage. My wife used the word coward. I think that’s right. They really are acting like they are afraid of what will happen (to them) if they rule against him and if he were to win. That reinforces the idea that these are really mob boss trials, and our justices are compromised (willingly or not).

    Why didn’t the questions include one where the President assassinates a Supreme Court Justice for being corrupt in his eyes? Immunity for that? Would they have taken the case more seriously then? Considered the longer term consequences?

    I am so sick of paywalls. We have to find a more sustainable form of journalism. All general news articles should be free after 24 hours. Feature articles can stay behind the paywall. Those who want or need superfresh news can (and will) pay.

    obviousdwest,
    @obviousdwest@hachyderm.io avatar

    @shoq This war started when they made the ads so obnoxious. Overlaying the content, popups, sound on videos, flashing, etc. A couple of ads for relevant products in the gutter or headers would be fine. But they had to amp it up. So we had to protect our eyeballs. Same w tracker cookies. Couldn’t leave it alone; escalated; triggered. Sigh.

    we are rapidly approaching the point at which CAPTCHAs clever enough to keep the bots out are too confusing for the humans

    obviousdwest,
    @obviousdwest@hachyderm.io avatar

    @molly0xfff “bigger” is the wrong word. That implies what you thought…each bigger than its image. “Biggest” would have communicated to compare real-life sizes. It’s a kind of misplaced (assumed) pronoun problem.

    Is it just me, or has package tracking just...stopped working, lately? I mean, it's always been somewhat janky at the edges, but the last few times I've been expecting something, both USPS and UPS have simply not been able to tell me where, when, or sometimes even what the hell.

    obviousdwest,
    @obviousdwest@hachyderm.io avatar

    @lilithsaintcrow It could be anywhere in the information chain that the data is no longer being exchanged. Tensions between say Amazon and USPS could result in undocumented changes to the data APIs. DeJoy could be doing it on purpose to make USPS look bad. UPS may be in dispute w Amazon about the amount of business they get. Or, yes, it could be greed. Pay us, or we downgrade the feed.

    Trump's criminal NY trial will begin Monday with jury selection. Court will meet four days a week (not on Wednesday). Trump will likely be required to be present for all sessions (absent special permission to be absent). Cameras will not be present, but reporters will be permitted to report via text in real time from the courtroom and overflow room. This will be the first ex-president (or President) to face a criminal trial in U.S. history.

    While it is not completely impossible, the likelihood of anything further delaying the start of this trial is considered to be very low. Trump has lately been sending a barrage of filings to the court and appeals court to try delay; they have all been turned down quickly so far at this late stage.

But cross-country had a way of actually getting me outside and doing something. This was in The Pas, Manitoba.
