Released in 1988 on the album 'Fisherman's Blues', The Waterboys' iconic song blends Celtic folk, rock, and country. Its expansive sound features fiddles, mandolin, and soaring vocals, painting a vivid picture of life by the sea. This timeless classic marked a shift in the band's direction and remains a beloved anthem.
Second album by this SW Virginia area trio. Soon One Morning is firmly planted in Old-Time Appalachian tradition, but concentrates mostly on original material. Standing out in particular is "Floyd Allen," Ralph Berrier Jr's masterful retelling of an area tragedy with a sweet and unexpected major/minor chorus change-up. Mike Gangloff's lengthy and elegiac instrumental "This War Is Killing Me" glides along on a sad melody passed around between resonator guitar, cello and fiddle. Many tracks are anchored by Gangloff's unusual gut-string baritone banjo. Two solo instrumentals on the CD add balance between the vocal numbers - Isak Howell's "Have You Been To Alabama?" is a subtle fingerpicked workout, while Gangloff's "Ironto Special" is a considerably more exotic-sounding modal construction on the big banjo. Elsewhere, there's an upbeat essay of "Pallet On The Floor," a relation to "Poor Boy Long Ways From Home," which appeared on the groups debut North Fork Flyer album. Among the traditional numbers, none is more striking than the group's charging and rough treatment of "Oh Death," with Gangloff and Berrier spitting out the call and response vocal which gives the album its title.
Rough-edged folk delivered with a minimalist arrangement – a voice, a guitar, and some poetry. Like most material in this genre, your enjoyment is going to be directly tied to how much you enjoy not just the format but also the particulars. The lyrics are clever, well constructed and engaging, so if they click with you, this will likely find a home in your heart.

In 1710, it was claimed that music of Swiss #Alpine herdsmen & the Guggisberglied (a #folk song), led Swiss soldiers to desert. The singing of the same resulted (allegedly) in capital #punishment.
One doctor thought that the low air pressure made the Swiss sick with longing & would lead, if not returned home, to their eventual #death.

W tym tygodniu słuchałem dużo i wśród tych sesji były mocne przeskoki, np. pomiędzy szaleńczym grindcorem i... Postmodern Jukebox, którzy wypuścili nową płytę. Dodatkowo, wsiąknąłem znowu w kilka polecajek starych zespołów, które już wszyscy znają, a ja dopiero teraz się zachwycam. Albo i nie.
Anaal Nathrakh - zaczynamy od razu z mocnym uderzeniem, bo to, co można usłyszeć u Brytyjczyków na niektórych płytach, to rzeźnia, szaleństwo, elektrowstrząsy i nie wiadomo co jeszcze. I o ile wiem, że na najnowszych płytach panowie poszli w kierunku niekoniecznie przez wszystkich akceptowany, to ja w tym tygodniu powróciłem do czasów, kiedy grali industrial black metal połączony z grindcorem i cholera wie, czym jeszcze. Co ciekawe, już kiedyś słyszałem Analne Wiatraki (tak, wiem, że ich się tak nie tłumaczy, ale tak mi się to podoba, że nie mogę się powstrzymać) i trochę mnie rozczarowały, ale czas weryfikuje pewne kwestie. Przede wszystkim polecam albumy "The Codex Necro" i "Eschaton", ale ostrzegam - to nie jest muzyka dla wszystkich. A sobie sam się dziwię, że wytrzymałem ten ładunek industrialu, bo fanem nie jestem.
Outre - bardzo ciekawy zespół i to z naszego rodzimego Krakowa. Black metal, który jest bardziej ciężkostrawny niż zwykła łupanina, przypominająca trochę Deathspell Omegę, a także islandzkie podejście do ciężkiej muzyki. To nie jest coś, czego się słucha dla hitów, ale można się wciągnąć ze względu na klimat. Warto sprawdzić.
Mysticum - przed chwilą pisałem, że nie bardzo podchodzi mi industrial black metal, a teraz będę pisał o legendach tego nurtu z Norwegii. Ściana dźwięku, agresja, przemoc, trochę "kosmosu", szczególnie na albumie "Planet Satan". Dobrze się tego słucha.
Windir, album "1184" - zauroczyłem się. Wiem, że to jeden z kanonicznych zespołów folk BM i jest tutaj trochę festyniarskich klawiszy, za którymi nie przepadam, ale ten album jest magiczny. To taki BM, w którym jest dużo melodii, które brzmią nieco "tanio", ale tak buduje to klimat, że hej. Później spróbowałem jeszcze płyty "Arntor", ale niestety, to już nie było to. Szkoda, że zespół skończył tak, jak skończył (wokalista zamarzł podczas burzy śnieżnej).
Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox - tak, jak pisałem, ten kolektyw wypuścił nową płytę, ale generalnie polecam ich twórczość, szczególnie, jeśli ktoś lubi muzykę wczesnych lat Stanów Zjednoczonych i jest zauroczony stylem Pin-Up. To drugie jest mi obojętne, ale aranżacje są świetne. Uspokajam - nie, to w ogóle nie jest metal, wręcz przeciwnie. Ale czasem trzeba zaznać też trochę innej kultury.
Swarn - agresja, przemoc, gniew, pożoga, napindalamy na całego. Tak można scharakteryzować tę deathmetalową kapelę z Estonii. W tej muzyce nie ma absolutnie nic oryginalnego, ale to, co mają robić, robią dobrze (tzn. spuszczają wpierdziel słuchaczowi). Na minus fakt, że utwory się zlewają i nie ma tutaj ani grama innowacji pomiędzy nimi, ale wynagradzają to biegłością instrumentalno-wokalną.
I'm really excited! I've just purchased tickets to see Eddi Reader in concert at The Perth Concert Hall. The gig is on Sunday, April 21st, 2024. This will be the first time I've seen her perform.
