I hate to say it, but there's a long running #donation#scam campaign regarding #lgbtq people in the #kakuma camp in #Kenya. I was contacted privately in the typical fashion (just "hi") by @ mawa@mastodon.world. Don't fall for it. If you want to help with the real dire situation, the attached reddit link has information and true donation links.
If you encounter #scammers, please #report them. And please #boost this for more awareness. https://www.reddit.com/r/lgbt/comments/wacwlw/regarding_kakuma_camp/
Study comparing health and genetic differences in settled and nomadic groups of the #Ariaal of N. #Kenya. A mutation associating to #ADHD may be favourable for the nomads.
'In modern children diagnosed with ADHD, the genetic mutation generally correlates with restlessness and distractibility. And in those Ariaal children who had settled into sedentary Western behaviours, the gene was linked to poor health and distracted classroom behaviours. But in those Ariaal who still practised a traditional nomadic life, the gene mutation was linked to strength and better nutritional health.'
NEW: The Indigenous Ogiek tribe in Southwest Kenya has successfully fought a decade-long legal battle to stop the Kenyan government from illegally evicting them from the Mau Forest and flipping the land for an alleged carbon credit trading scheme.
Yet, the Kenyan Forest Service has ignored rulings, going as far as setting fire to Ogiek huts this past November.
⚠️Confirmed: Metrics show a significant disruption to internet service across #Kenya with national connectivity now at 77% of ordinary levels; the incident comes amid a major power outage, the country's third such incident in a year 🔌📉

#Blackwater founder and 4 others on trial in #Austria over export of modified crop-spraying planes
By The Associated Press
November 16, 2023
BERLIN — "Five people including the founder of the Blackwater security firm went on trial in Austria on Thursday, accused of exporting two #cropspraying aircraft that were allegedly refitted for #military purposes without required permits.
"The trial in Wiener Neustadt, south of Vienna, stems from an investigation into a local company, #AirborneTechnologies GmbH, which fits out aircraft with sensors and other equipment.
"Prosecutors say that two Ayres Thrush agricultural aircraft were equipped with armor, extra tanks and a special camera that could be used for marking and illuminating targets. They say one was sent to #Malta in 2014 with #Kenya as its declared destination and landed in troubled #SouthSudan, while the other was sent to #Bulgaria in 2015.
"The defendants are accused of violating Austria's law on war material by exporting such equipment without permission. One of the defendants, an Australian pilot, is accused of flying the two planes across Austria's borders, while the four other defendants allegedly participated in the deal. They are Blackwater founder Erik Prince, two managers at Airborne Technologies and a trained pilot who allegedly was an adviser.
"All pleaded not guilty as the trial started, the Austria Press Agency reported.
"The next court session is scheduled for Dec. 14 [2023]."

“The iconic acacia tree in front of Mount Kilimanjaro”
The plains surrounding Kilimanjaro (the “lowlands”), are located between 600 and 800 meters above sea level. The climate is very hot and dry.
The vegetation is mainly composed of savannahs made up of numerous plant species, including the famous umbrella thorn acacia, a thorny tree that can reach up to 21 m high.

The saddle-billed stork, or saddlebill (Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis) is a large wading bird in the stork family, Ciconiidae. It is a widespread species which is a resident breeder in sub-Saharan Africa from Sudan, Ethiopia and Kenya south to South Africa, and in The Gambia, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire and Chad in west Africa.
This is a close relative of the widespread Asian and Australian black-necked stork, the only other member of the genus Ephippiorhynchus.
While many might assume that the birds are a constant annoyance to the majestic buffalo who carry them across the plains of Kenya, they would only be half right.
A classic alliance in the animal kingdom is often seen in the African Buffalos. Birds often sit on the back of buffaloes, pecking in open wounds, picking vermin from the host's fur, and even looking deep into their ears and noses for food - typically a win-win situation for both.
There are many lakes along the length of the African Rift Valley, which runs from the Red Sea in the north to Mozambique in the south. Kenya’s eastern Rift Valley has a string of eight lakes.
The Rift Valley is subject to ongoing plate tectonics and crustal movement that can affect the lakes. The recent rises, though, are directly associated with above-average rainfall. The lakes have been even higher in the past, and with rainfall in the Rift Valley Basin being on a rising rainfall trend, higher lake levels can be expected in the future.
Lakes Nakuru, Bogoria, and Baringo have risen to their highest levels in decades, inundating roads and building infrastructure, yet they also are not as high as they were in the early part of the last century.
