Had a dinosaur encounter this morning at Griffith Park

(That’s a gopher in the heron’s beak, snapped up right out of its burrow)

The blue heron closer and from a better angle, looking well fed and regal, though the effect is offset by picnic tables and a trash can in the background

@blogdiva has me on a roll.

This documentary was nearly lost to history because the unreleased 16mm disappeared in the 80s.
Ten years ago my dad found a copy on tape among his old files.

Hey y'all, Dani here. Where my bird people at? Flock to me. Or at me. Send me all the birds and bird people. I'm old and trying to figure out how to use this thing. Don't yell at me. I'll figure it out eventually.

Spent the afternoon hiking around Deception Pass State Park, and walked past a madrone full of chestnut-backed chickadees doing adorable gymnastics to glean insects from the leaves

Hey there Bay friends! In case you needed something to do this spring, the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History is again offering the California Naturalist course. I highly recommend considering advancing your skills with this fun and enlightening class. Feel free to hit me up with any questions, since I'm certified, as well!

Took my camera to Griffith park on Saturday to finally get some images of the acorn woodpecker colony that lives by the merry-go-round, who have apparently never seen a hole they wouldn't try to use for acorn storage

The bag on the left are the insects that have made it through this year's sessions, whereas the ones on the right are goners. 1 session discovered that the pins in the jars move 🙈
This is one of the longest sessions to prepare for due to the need to replace these invertebrates throughout the year, naturally. The dead are collected during our travels of the world then dried in silica before mounting.
Anyone local want to give me their dead?

Sorry, not sorry for filling your timeline with my garden photos this morning. Got to see some amazing colors & activity with insects (even in the chilly air) yesterday as I meandered through the spaces.

The Virginia creeper is going strong! Look at all those wonderful little holes & trails from insects in the leaves! Makes my heart sing, especially with the plethora of moths flitting out of my way while walking the paths.
