Did you know that Tyrian , a worn by high-ranking people from the era onwards, was pretty foul?

The dye was made of which were left to rot.
A dyer would then crush them and dye garments.

This would leave both his hands & the with a fishy, unpleasant smell.

The dye was also used by Rabbis & was so offensive that the (a book important to ), would allow women to divorce their husbands if they became dyers after marriage.

There are no sea shells in the deepest parts of the ocean (at least not big enough for us to see). Shells are mostly made out of calcium carbonate, and beneath 4-5 km depth in the ocean (the Challenger Deep is ~10,902m) the pressure makes the calcium carbonate dissolve. Marine snail shells falling from above will never reach the seafloor – they’ll just dissolve on the way. Anything living in the depths will never see a snail, and only silica-based shells will survive.

Some funky fresh #ammolite fragments lookin' #chonky. These are cooler than baby goats in pajamas, but not by much. We goat-cha covered with all your gloomscrolling needs. Just watch these babies glisten and glimmer, and see if it doesn't raise your spirits. #Nature is beautiful.

Snails of Tokyo museum, two dextral, two sinistral. I'm in Japan to find sites where they are sympatric - perhaps the artist the artist found one already, or else, payed no attention at all to chirality

I played with my snails for a few minutes this morning, for the first time in a while really cause I’ve been away sick :( so have some long overdue . Niles has been super into his jade plant so I let him be, but Trixie and Chibi were playing piggyback in the palm of my hand.

A closer-up of Trixie and Chibi from the last photo.
A pic of the two snails, this time in my palm. Trixie is still on top of Chibi, peering down curiously.
Still stacked on one another, the two snails sniff out a carrot chunk.

Never seen that before 😮, one of the most unusual Cepaea 🐌shells I have seen. On my walk to work.

The snail has switched off pink pigmentation mid way through development, presumably due to environmental cue?

Will the colour return? We'll see - 🐌 now in lab.

We don't get a lot of snail photos here.

So I thought I'd share.

A couple of striped snails out for a morning stroll, on a tree stump.

a snail that lives with ants??

" Allopeas myrmekophilos was regularly found in colonies of the ponerine army ant Leptogenys distinguenda. The gastropods always remained inside the bivouacs of their hosts, where they were able to move around undisturbed by the ants. During emigrations A. myrmekophilos was always carried by workers in a manner identical to brood or prey items."

21/04/2024 - Like our new friend who we met on our travels today, a Copse snail, we took the day slow.

I was just reading a bit about them, Most snails in the UK only live up to 2 years but this snail can live up to 14 years.

With all that extra time you would think it would travel far and wide but it's said it doesn't cover more than 25 metres in its entire life! An easy pleased snail, nothing wrong with that.
