https://jointhefediverse.net is now available "po slovensky"! More languages are coming. Huge thanks to everyone who reached out and offered to provide translation!
Between Twitter and Reddit imploding, and Meta soon launching their fediverse-compatible Project 92/Barcelona/Threads, there's a great need to make https://jointhefediverse.net available in more languages.
Would you join me and the rest of the volunteers and help out?
"Helsing is a new type of defense company. We believe that software, in particular #AI, will be the key to protecting our #democracy. Our teams design technology products that transform the operational capabilities of both new and existing defense platforms, to deliver faster and more accurate decision-making at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels.
Helsing is a pan-European, multi-domestic company with national entities in Germany, the UK, and France. As a result, we can access the widest pool of European talent for technology infrastructure and capabilities. Our domain experience means we are attuned to the most difficult problems faced by our governments. Helsing has had a pretty exciting ride so far, growing from 4 to 200 employees (140 of which are on the engineering team) in the course of two years.
Helsing, like most companies that make extensive use of #Rust, is able to do so in large part due to the amazing (and often #volunteer-based) work of the Rust community. [...]
To the community: thank you, thank you, thank you. Not only have I personally gotten a lot of value from being part of and contributing to the Rust community, but I have also seen the extensive impact of all you do at scale at AWS and now at Helsing. Without you all, we would all still be writing high-performance, security-critical systems in C++ and Java, and paying the price."

Heading home. So proud of us. At 4:30 pm—1h before event start—our tool hauler called: no power @ the storage space, can’t get tools, bike, & trailer. She drove to 2 board members’ houses to borrow tools & we got the word out to our leader corps to bring whatever they had. And we did it! We got 20 #volunteers w < 24h notice. Can’t wait to share the before/after pics w y’all.
I'm about to start volunteering IT support for a non profit org and realizing there are probably many well established best practices that are specific to non profits.
I will go to check for Google but might as well ask here, what are some of the key challenges involved in operating and maintaining IT infrastructure for a non-profit?
Volunteers, funding, regulations and vendors must come and go at a much higher rate than most orgs.
Very interested to see where this goes. #volunteer#it
I am still seeing people who should know better spreading the #misinformation that Mastodon is opposed to quote posts, reply limits, better search, etc. The reason those features haven't shown up yet is not ideological opposition: it's the fact that the Mastodon project's engineering staff is 2-3 people, while corporate social media platforms have engineering teams in the dozens or hundreds. If you have the skills and can #volunteer, please consider it!
My submission proposals for PyCon US 2024 were rejected. 🥲
Congratulations to all the speakers, especially first-time-speakers. 👏
Thanks to all the volunteers who worked to review all the proposals. 🙏
Have fun everyone in Pittsburgh. 🎉 https://us.pycon.org/2024/
🤯 Wow! I just learned that I will be honored at the Massachusetts Black and Latino Caucus' premier latino culture celebration-- the Latino Excellence Awards!
I am being recognized for my community service, and volunteering at home and abroad.
In these times where #violence is displacing millions of people, it's easy to feel helpless, and that all you can do is scream into the void we call #socialmedia hoping it will all stop.
But depending on where you live, maybe there is something you can do. #volunteer to help the #refugees in your area.
Even my mid-sized southern city accepted and relocated hundreds of refugees this year, and many of them need food, aid, language training, etc, and the orgs that help them are understaffed.
Day 3 of trail maintenance last week wrapped the water control by the new gabion net, then loads of tread work. Photos never show the magnitude of tread work but it was a lot of mudslide relocation (tons of dirt).
Tread work is my favorite, but it’s for sure the most back breaking. Takes a full week off from running to recover. Looks like a new project just posted for next week a little further up trail.
