Also a report that two NYPD thugs got a peppery surprise when they tried to arrest someone for jumping the turnstyle to beat the fare. As soon as they started hassling him, he pulled out his mace and blasted both of them right in the face at point-blank range.

Unfortunately, those two assholes must have had some "swim buddies," as the guy defending himself using mace was unable to escape. Though he went to jail, both cops went to the hospital, presumably as they never REALLY know what's in that can they just got hosed down with. Back on Jan 20, 2005 at GW Bush's second Inauguration, a number of DC cops went to the hospital after being hit with water balloons loaded with pepper spray. Again, they probably figured by taste and smell it was mace, but went to the hospital as a precaution against unknown additives.

NYPD is known to love pepper spray, but I doubt they love being on the receiving end of it.

Just saw a report that about 100 hard-pressed migrants managed to defeat Abbot's National Guard troops in a border skirmish and force their way onto territory claimed by the illegitimate settler regime known as the "United States." This wasn't at Eagle Pass but elsewhere.

NG troops held their fire, if even one shot had been fired it would have been our job to make them pay for it.

Naturally, fash media are screaming about this. It's all those settler bigots who whine about Indigenous people crossing from one piece of Indigenous land to another that need to be deported. Back to Europe they can go. Since settler borders were drawn over the objection of every nation originally on this continent, they have no legitimacy. You cannot "deport" folks who are so often more Indigenous than anything else-because they are already home!

By the logic France, Britain, and Spain used to carve up the whole hemisphere, I could make a "treaty" dividing Mar-a-Lago between anarchists and communists, and declare that members of Trump's staff were "legally" restricted to whichever half of Mar-a-Lago they were in when this "treaty" was made.

@DemocracyMattersALot This piece of shit (Kyle Rittenhouse) is due to speak at Kent State on April 16th.

In other words, a man known for shooting protesters is going to Kent State, the same place protesters were shot by National Guard troops occupying the campus in on May 4, 1970. Kyle Rittenhouse at Kent State is very much in the "spirit of Kent State" in the negative sense of it.

Five students were murdered and another paralyzed for life in the 1970 May 4 Massacre, which may have been one of the turning points of the entire Vietnam War. The NG was deployed in an attempt to suppress an uprising on campus (one of a great many) over the US invasion of Cambodia to support the Vietnam War.

Shortly after the massacre, the Weather Underground succeeded in bombing the National Guard's national headquarters in Washington DC.

Kyle Rittenhouse's visit comes as the National Guard is again being politicized, with ten state's troops being deployed to Texas to support TX Gov Abbot's rebellion against the Federal government.

Let's shut this speaking tour down, the way Richard Spencer's speaking tour on campuses was shit down in Spring 2018! That was a somewhat expensive battle as felony charges were filed, but it killed off Richard Spencer's speaking tour, effectively finishing what started at Charlottesville: the defeat of NPI and the suit and tie "alt-right."

To those who dismiss or worse condemn him, I ask this question: what have YOU done for Palestine?

Lots of people out there need to get their heads out of the sand and their asses in the grass. Whether your place is at the front or in the rear handling the logistics that make the front possible(unsung but sooo important!) , you don't get to sit out resistance to genocide, then condemn others for stepping up.

As far as I am concerned, Aaron Bushnell and Tort are two people whose names will ring through history, and who will be spoken of at campfires long after their enemies have been defeated forever.

I feel like the funny thing for me with the Tiktok ban is that a lot of Americans, on either side of the debate, don't seem to realize that Tiktok feels to Americans like every single social media platform feels to people outside the US. You're telling me the app is located outside your country and your government's control, and you don't know how its data gets handled in that country? That's every app, to me.

LukefromDC,
@LukefromDC@kolektiva.social avatar

@misty I have chosen not to allow ANY closed source or ad supported app on any device I own, not to allow ads or trackers from any site (and not to use Chrome at all)-and not to have accounts on any corporate social media site.

I have chosen to entirely reject the ad supported/data sale supported business model and everything that stands on it.

You won't find me on Tiktok-but for the same reason you won't find me on Facebook or Youtube. I oppose the Tiktok ban though, as it appears to be a naked maneuver by the US to ensure they are the ones doing the spying. Also, things I do use like Mastodon (especially this particular server) do not participate in shit like PRISM and could be next in line, though much harder to target.

A big age verification crackdown could mean you find me only on the darknet, as I will never cooperate with that.

We don't need Resolution Copper, and the Indigenous owners of the land have spoken. Their decision is final, the mine is forbidden. It is up to all of us to back up the Apache as they protect their land from corporate superpredators AND the customer base of the same.

The settlers cannot invade the lands of others, than insist on destroying those lands to prevent an ecological problem caused by their own tools.

If settlers want to mine, let them mine their own waste stream, not undamaged land. Let them eat their own shit.

As long ago as 1970, there were landfills on the US East Coast that contained more copper by weight than copper mines then being worked for profit. Probably true for many other metals too. Even gold now with all the computer stuff that goes in the trash to make room for the latest new models and annual new subsidized phones.

Here's another part of it all: suppose gasoline was banned, yet electric cars were not available. Suburbs would collapse into rings of towns most residents would not have to commute in or out of routinely. If even half the public is limited to walking and biking, nobody can put stores and jobs out of walking range of where people live anymore.

Just as the car by promoting sprawl did not shorten commutes from the age of foot, horse, and streetcar, it is doubtful commutes would remain lengthened for long after driving become impractical for most.

If a few people stop driving and cannot afford urban $$$ rents, the rest of the land around them does not change, they have to deal with long bus or bike rides through endless sprawl. An end to practical car commuting for EVERYONE is entirely another matter. Suburbs collapse back into towns, residential-only zoning gets flushed down the toilet of history. We don't need all that copper...

Book burner press conference disrupted in Bartow, FL

On the 18th of March, so-called "Citizens defending Freedom in Florida" held a press conference across from the Polk County courthouse in Bartow, FL. They demanded that more books be removed from schools, announced they were filing a lawsuit demanding the same, and that they were demanding the Governor remove "uncooperative" school board members. The latter is an extension of his existing crusade against non-MAGA/non-Fundamentalist prosecutors in both Tampa and Orlando.

As these very longwinded fascists droned on and on, protesters shouted them down and disrupted them, demanding "Freedom to Read" and the right to let their kids read books other than those approved by the Church

Orlando Police threaten to arrest Palestine marchers for "fighting" after assault by Zionist.

Florida is a "stand your ground" state but you would not know it from how Orlando bike cops treated Palestine marchers at Lake Eola on March 16, 2024.

On that day, on our second lap around Lake Eola, an Israel supporter assaulted marchers but was apparently kept at bay by his own limited fighting skills. I did not see the initial incident but the aftermath was ugly. Not long after saying right into the camera that they were there to keep us safe, cops did something very different. The march was stopped, two people were being "questioned" by cops while they argued with one of the marchers. Unknown who the other two were. When one of the marchers told the cops they had been physically assaulted, cops responded that they only intervention they would make would be to arrest both sides for "fighting"-in a stand your ground state!

This is like the worst excesses of how some schools treat students harassed by bullies. This is intolerable in any school and is intolerable in the street too. Self-defense against physical violence is a human right. So it is at Lake Eola-and so it is in Gaza.

The cops did not proceed to arrest attempts, it seems their actual intent was to say "You are on your own. We stand with Israel and you are responsible for your own security." Message received: if Zionists assault protesters, the arrival of cops is the arrival of more Zionists. Thus the common chant in Orlando "OPD, KKK, IDF, they're all the same!"

Cops don't keep us safe, we keep us safe!

If your advocacy for Palestine and stance against genocide is conditional based on your career ambitions, you are not a real ally. It's really that simple. Genocide is a red line and if you partner with the people conducting genocide, that overshadows everything else you do. Period. If you don't get that, you don't understand what genocide even is. If it’s a choice between having solidarity with Gaza OR partnering with Raytheon and you chose Raytheon: you are on the side of genocide. Period.

@VPS_Reports Fuck corporate careers. My "career" is fighting for the people I care about and has been for over 40 years. My first time out was March 27, 1982 with 30,000+ people opposing Reagan's war in El Salvador.

As for pro-genocider's, an old rule about Nazis applies here: if ten people and one Nazi sit down for dinner at the same table, there are 11 Nazis at the table.

PBS segment on plastic recycling discusses a report showing that plastics don't actually recycle, that oil companies have known for decades it wouldn't work, and that recycling was always a PR distraction designed to avoid regulation and allow more plastic to be made.

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/the-plastic-industry-knowingly-pushed-recycling-myth-for-decades-new-report-finds

LukefromDC,
@LukefromDC@kolektiva.social avatar

@WearsHats Some plastics can be re-used, but we have made the social CHOICE not to keep recyclable objects separate. Paper cannot be mixed with anything else, both plastic and metal are contaminents. Even glass is tough to work with once colors get mixed. Forget mixed plastics entirely, and some plastic packaging even absorbs a bit of the contents. Aluminum, steel and of all things lead-acid batteries (95% recycled) are the big success stories. Plastic has failed.

Re-use though is another matter.

In some countries a tossed bottle or can (even plastic) cannot be used as a dead drop for spies because it will be picked up in minutes to be used again or made into a drinking cup. Glass bottles (although heavy and breakable) are the most reusable of all. Those old style soda bottles were a famously reused product, washed over and over again until the Plastic Counter-Revolution came along. You can do this with plastic but that is going to be single-user due to sanitary issues.

Before something happened in 2014 that made most house brand sodas taste bad to me (possibly an agricultural issue affecting Kola nuts), I used to get the big bottles of house brand soda for less than 90 cents. To take it on the road, I refilled smaller Coke or Pepsi bottles. I got months out of those bottles before they finally started to delaminate(they seem to be made in layers). Main downside was the bottom 3ed of the soda always went flat when used for slow sipping to match how fast I burn blood sugar. If the big bottles are the same brand as the littles ones though, cost savings goes to near-zero due to this loss.

Soda should be offered in premixed kegs at the store the way beer is, and a better grade of bottles sold empty. Most water bottles won't hold the pressure but that could be changed. Stainless steel or aluminum bottle, stopper with rubber seal, soda by the keg. No more plastic needed.

Now apply that industry-wide. Some plastics could be recycled if they were never mixed with any other plastic AND are thermoplastic not thermosetting plastics. Example: crash a styrofoam fixed-wing drone, you used foam to avoid imported tropical balsa wood. The foam could be dissolved or melted down and blown again-right back into the same molds plus enough more to replace any losses.

If not, aluminum "honeycomb" is also incredibly light and aluminum recycling actually subsidizes all other recycling.
