Long before there was Silicon Valley and all its technocratic adulation, there were trees and mountains, meadows and blue sky -- places of beauty nature invited us to be in and enjoy.

And long after technocracy fails, the trees and mountains and meadows will remain. Still beautiful. Still inviting us to be in them and enjoy.

@mykhaylo indeed that is true -- technology has the potential to do and be good, as well as the opposite. Technocracy tends to lie in the latter category.

The ability to create is a gift given to us as human beings. With our hands, hearts, minds, and skill we are able to fabricate and bring forth things of beauty and goodness . . . or, things that are not. We do well when we determine to use our creativity for good, and refuse to employ it for evil.

@Deus I am glad. I enjoy creating the Santa works -- finding places where a likable, approachable Santa can be in real, believable setting and then painting him there.

All your promises,

You never meant to honor.

And you never did.

In the "land of the free," it's not a matter of blue vs. red or red vs. blue so much as Those with Power vs. Those Who Wish to Live Free.

The weather could go either way. It was one of those moments in which the storm hadn't quite decided whether it wanted to unleash itself in a torrent of rain, or slowly dissipate into a cloudy day broken by gleams of sunlight. Either way, the show would be worth seeing.

The river moves calmly through its landscape, not in any particular hurry to get where it's going because, even if the pace is leisurely, it will still, eventually, reach its destination. A good thing to remember when we're tempted to rush through our day.

I love Zion National Park in Utah, USA. Not the crowds, mind you, but if you're willing to explore the "back 40" of the park, the places not listed on brochures, you find all the majesty and splendor of the landscape, without the noise or crowds.

The ocean invites us to stroll its beaches, feeling the surf on our bare feet as we look out into the vastness of water and waves. This is a time and place for daydreaming, imagining, wondering, and experiencing peace.

The beauty of dance is that it frees our mind and body to move gracefully through space, releasing them both from the confines of worry, fear, and anxiety. And in freeing ourselves from these elements, we encounter joy.

Flowers aren't difficult -- they stay in the basket where they belong, waiting to be arranged into a spring bouquet. But cats . . . they never stay where we want them, such as in our arms or laps. Unless, of course, we don't want them there . . .

I have never hiked Angels Landing trail in Zion National Park, not because it isn't beautiful (I'm sure it is), but because it is crowded. The line of hikers working their way up looks like a looong line in the grocery store. Instead, I choose to hike trails that few people find because they're not promoted. But they're beautiful. And not crowded.

It is late afternoon on a sultry summer day in the country. The wheat fields surrounding the farmhouse are golden, glowing under the soon to be setting sun, and from where you're sitting, on the porch, it feels good to just enjoy the silence and the peace.

Years ago, when my wife and I were first married and had little money to spare, we were almost offered a free TV, but it went to my wife's older brother and his wife because, well, I don't know why. But to this day, we are grateful, because we never did wind up getting a TV. Instead, we focused on books, the love of which has passed on to our children.

Gold. It is indeed precious. But this particular gold isn't a metal, and it isn't limited to the hands of a few. Indeed, the golden glow of a quiet, calm sunrise can't be held at all, but is freely given to all to enjoy.

Well, yes, there is technically a trail.

It doesn't shout out its presence but rather, murmurs, or maybe even mutters, its existence. Now and then it goes completely silent, as you look around, befuddled, to see where it could have gone to. And it's over there. Sort of. Kind of.

But it is, technically, a trail.
