There's nothing like losing yourself in a good book -- a GOOD book, one well written with an interesting story that inspires you to think, wonder, imagine, and dream.

She runs through her day in the simple joy of being a child -- pretending, playing, imagining -- all the things that children do so well, and should be allowed to do with freedom. Let your inner wild child run free this week and go ahead, think a thought that defies convention!

Light and shadow form a dappled pattern on a narrow dirt path, cutting its way through a forest of trees. It's not a smooth path, but at least it's relatively level, and for now, easy to follow. Around the bend, things may be different. Life's paths aren't freeways; they are most definitely paths.

The setting sun casts a pink glow on the hills in the background, while wildflowers in the field stand straight and tall before folding their blossoms for evening. The landscape invites you to lie down amidst the foliage, look up at the sky, and dream.

On a blustery day in autumn, you can stay inside and watch TV -- because it might rain -- or you can grab a jacket, put a hat on to keep your hair from blowing around, and take a walk along a winding, wending country road. You'll feel a lot better after a walk.

The thing about walking your own path in life is that you'll look, live, and be unusual, not at all the way you're "supposed" to be, and insecure people who watch too much TV will not hesitate to tell you so. That's when you know you're being yourself.

There are few things worth getting genuinely upset about, and it's highly unlikely they are any of the things we're instructed to get upset about. We will never find peace if we are angry all the time.

The river moves calmly through its landscape, not in any particular hurry to get where it's going because, even if the pace is leisurely, it will still, eventually, reach its destination. A good thing to remember when we're tempted to rush through our day.

Summer. And childhood. There is time in each and freedom -- freedom from the schoolroom and its rules, and time to think and imagine and wonder. Even as adults, we experience summer, and can pick a flower, look closely at it, and dream.

When I was a kid, I used to take a lot of rambling walks through the country, and while as an adult I tend to plan my hikes, I still enjoy a good ramble. You never know what you'll see when you crest that little hill.

Too many people are waiting until they die to find paradise. And while life on earth is admittedly imperfect, if we're always waiting for "someday," we won't be aware of the glimpses of paradise we receive while we're still "down here."

High tide, low tide -- twice each day there are two of each, and the ocean and its coast reflect the constant change and movement of the moon's pull. There is always something to see at the sea, and it's worth taking time to see it.

These mountains remind me of benevolent sentinels, ringing the valley and watching over its meadows and its people. The voices of the Nez Perce, who used to live in this area, call out to the traveler today.

Country roads are not freeways, and you simply cannot drive quickly on them. And while this seems obvious, you'd be surprised at the people who try. Better, instead, to accept them for what they are and enjoy the leisurely way they take you through the landscape. More peaceful that way.

Mountains are always a reminder to me that the earth is a big place, filled with incredible landscapes, and it doesn't like to be dominated or controlled. We are more than welcome to live here as guests and family, but not as rulers.

Those who worry too much about fitting in don't focus on being who and what they truly are. When we are comfortable with ourselves, we don't look like a copy of someone else. And that's when insecure people call us "different."
