Progress will cure. Progressive in all senses, socially, culturally and scientifically.

I'm an engineer, I love space exploration, I have no shame in that. However I do appreciate the bounty of science has been abused by capitalism to create endless pointless shite that is suffocating our beautiful planet.

Banner picture is the ship in the iconic movie Silent Running which made me cry as a boy and left the deepest of impressions.

#ClimateDiary Kidney disease is high and rapidly worsening in coastal Bangladesh due to rising sea levels increasing water salinity as well as extreme heat. For many, like 65yo Khatun, dialysis is too expensive.

The whole of Khulna, once a thriving city, is affected by saline intrusion due to frequent floods, cyclones and tidal surge.

“The global climate crisis is essentially a water crisis,” says Dr Mohammad Shamsudduha at UCL.

Totally agree. Alas few see this incredibly deep sense of self entitlement among conservatives. During the early Covid period in the UK our conservative government did a feeding frenzy of self enrichment via in-club PPE contracts for businesses they only just set up and with no history selling PPE. Procuring sub standard or sometimes even absent product and selling at massive mark up.

As someone else said; Money is conservative's only god and only country.

Are the attacks on Anglea Rayner driven by snobbery, or to be clearer; classism?

Well when we compare her political treatment & the DWP's now toxic position on unpaid carers, with the lightness of touch when dealing with the wealthy (either in politics or when found to have broken tax-related laws), I think we can safely say that distinctions of class as drivers for public/official attitudes are ver much alive & kicking!

For sure, the "all politicians are just as bad" narrative is a powerful conservative propaganda message indeed.

A message that gets extra propagation as progressives generally hold each other to such high standards.

However in Angela's case I'd still assert the greater reason she's criticised so is that she's a woman. Misogyny runs even deeper into the establishment political psyche than class.

Sadly it works. An in-law of mine who I ended up showing my frustration to over the weekend just parroted all this conditioned outrage against utter trivia as his justification to vote Tory later in the year.

Mostly he's a reasonable person.

Brexit meant the super rich would have less tax risk for their off shore hoards. That is all that ever mattered to the Tories.

Some kippers probably believed in the fantasy but for the Tories it was a cynical calculated sinking of the UK to save the rich tax and make a load of hedge fund cash shorting their own country.

There’s a weird phenomenon in nature: the ant death spiral or, less morbidly, the ant mill.

Basically, if a group of army ants loses track of the pheromone trail they’re following, they just start following other ants. If those ants happen to double back and pick up the pheromone trail left by the lost ants, then they start following each other in a big circle.

They will then follow each other in an endless circle, trying to find their way home, until they die of exhaustion.

This is an example of an emergent phenomenon. By following an incredibly simple set of rules, a complex behavior emerges from interactions that the individual ants would never behave this way on their own.

And it’s an incredibly maladaptive emergent behavior. These ants don’t “want” to fruitlessly March themselves do death in an endless circle, but, by following that simple set of rules for survival, they end up destroying themselves.

TenPastTwo,
@TenPastTwo@mas.to avatar

Also that the evolutionary advantage to ants of being able to mobilise enmasse to follow a scent trail is so crucial that even though it sometimes leads to ant mills which can destroy entire hives, it still remains.

I also think in the US (and a slightly lesser extent the UK) that the far right have subsumed the traditional mainstream conservative parties. People feel that to call out what was the historical mainstream is too radical, something that only crazy fringe people do. In most of continental Europe the far right have their own parties so it's not seen as so radical to call them out.

Life's to short to read or reply to tankies and armchair anarchists who think it's morally superior to sit out elections and make it easier for fascists to take power.

Voting is imperfect. Representative democracies are compromised. The systems are rigged. None of this means we shouldn't use every lever at our disposal to try to shift things.

TenPastTwo,

I actually think it's the final stage of gaslighting, once someone sees through all the other projections and smokescreens and sees conservatives globally for the greedy hateful planet wrecking treasonous fascists they've become, then the final gaslight is to convince those who came that far that resistance is futile, voting is pointless and hope is gone.

Here's something I've been thinking about lately:

Does society need psychopathic behavior? Does it exist for a Social or Natural Evolutionary purpose?

I have edited the questions somewhat to emphasize behavior and not a person themselves.

TenPastTwo,
@TenPastTwo@mas.to avatar

@RickiTarr

I wonder if some societal models are more or less susceptible to psychopaths? A small peaceful materially poor community in say a harsh environment where people must work together to survive would have high immunity to freeloaders of any sort including psychopaths. Where materially wealthier or more warring societies would have more opportunity for psychopaths to work the system so to speak. Capitalism happens to be a system particularly favourable to psychopaths.
