An oddly specific #AskFedi, but Mastodon is the kind of place where I feel comfortable making a request like this, so here goes.

My request is for a female ethicist/moral philosopher (not necessarily a current or former professional philosopher, but someone who has at least a PhD in ethics/moral philosophy) who is a trans-inclusive feminist to DM me to advise me on a moral quandary I'm having relating to reproduction (not an urgent one, I should say, not remotely). I'm at the point where I cannot resolve the problem myself, but I don't feel like any of my female friends or family are capable of the kind of perspective or moral clarity that I need here. It's quite a big ask, I know, but for the first time in my life I need the services of a professional.

Boosts are much appreciated. Thank you.

I made a called Astrograph. It's inspired by the typography on ship hulls and by fonts like Microgramma and Eurostile! Check it out and be sure to grab a copy if you plan on christening any starships any time soon.

Forget April Fools, this font is the real deal.

i'm at a talk about post referendum australia by cherie sibosado

cherie was a kimberley delegate signatory of the uluru statement from the heart

some signatories have since died and didn't see the referendum, perhaps a blessing

the referendum here in broome was...hard. the kimberley has 40% indigenous population, cf australia's 3% overall.

in WA, the political warfare for the no vote came in the wake of a few big political things, indigenousleaders exhausted from a slew of recent events

campaigning in derby on voting day, cherie called it by 10am: this town is going to be a no. derby is the town down the road, the previous regional centre. a white woman felt compelled to stand over cherie and her husband to tell them as a 6th gen australian, she's voting no

on monday cherie organised a healing and grieving gathering in broome. if we get 30, she thought, that will be awesome. over 100 showed.

Looking for cover artist referrals (boosts welcome). Pay is $600 USD for a novel cover.

What I want:
Mr. Maybe and Dr. Don't is a non-traditional MG fantasy, with swords and magic and unusual woodland magical critters that need some art design. Whimsical without being farcical.

(In an ideal world the artist would also contribute some interior art, e.g. b/w frontispiece and/or chapter images. Price negotiable for that.)

Microsoft has endorsed KOSA, the legislation that the GOP wants to use to cut off access to information for LGBTQ youth (leading to untold self-harm, suicide and destroyed lives) and ruin the open Internet with ID requirements.

Please contact your reps and demand they vote against it.

Also, fuck you, Microsoft.

1-25 writers who write outside their gender/sexuality/race etc.?

A lot of people have posted cogent and complete answers to this that I largely agree with. Authors have to, no question

There's one consideration, though, that is rattling around in my mind that I need to speak out loud:

Right now, across the globe & including the US (where I live), transgender & nonbinary people are being murdered & allowed to die thanks to misinformation and invalid stereotyping

For anyone who has read this far, and still is like: “I don't know what to do or what to say in support... I'm afraid to ask friends I know about their experiences…”

Ask me

Seriously. I train agencies how to be more gender-affirming for a living. I will be happy to talk to you about the realities of being trans if it will help you be more confident being vocal about human rights.

Feel free to DM me if you genuinely want to learn

In 2014, I made a steampunk submarine costume for my son's wheelchair. When the chair was in motion, the pinwheel twirled, the wheel's design spiraled, and the periscope was retractable. Made entirely from cardboard and random stuff, including paper tubes, pill container lids, altoids tins, wallpaper, duct tape, and a clear plastic salad bowl rescued after a catered event.

@bsmedberg @mhoye Same as how, from time to time, folks fascinated by the engineering side of cryptocurrencies would come up with some ideas that would actually do useful things... and everyone in the domain promptly ignored them because the point was never to do useful things, it was to make a facade of solving grandiose-sounding made-up problems as an excuse for scamming people.

Folks, I am DESPERATELY seeking out Saab/Orio part 5440516 - transmission rebuild KIT. This is a complete kit. Every vendor I've talked to says none left, NLA, or won't even check if they have any.

IT MUST BE THE COMPLETE KIT!! I need a number of parts that are ONLY in the kit and were never sold separately. I have experience and can arrange international shipping if needed.

Boosts appreciated. If I can't find this part, there is no possibility of getting the Viggen back on the road.

Meta’s new “consent” wall is scam that undermines the European Court of Justice’s ruling of July.
This deceptive design pushes the user to “consent” to unrestricted use of their data. That includes intimate data that Meta obtains by tracking the user on other websites and apps.

One time, in a former life as a food writer I interviewed a Nordic three Michelin star chef. I asked him whether how the food he ate growing up might have inspired his cooking. Almost all Asian and French and Italian chefs say ‘my mother’. He said, ‘we had horrible food at home and I was determined to break the cycle’

Based on my extensive research of asking one work colleague, it seems that some people are not aware of this code of practice which ColesWorth adopted many years ago when barcode scanning was first introduced.

I had an experience on the weekend when a heavily discounted item scanned at full price. The self-checkout attendant then tried to adjust it to the discounted price.

I challenged her and she eventually gave it to me for free, as required by the code of practice.

She explained that, "oh it depends on management whether we do it for free or not".

Remember, if it scans higher than the listed price, it's FREE. You'll find this Code of Practice statement at the service counter if staff don't feel like following their own rules.

Sorry for the slightly blurry photo

Just got asked (politely) to tag my "technical" posts about photography because they make the person's eyes glaze over.

I definitely don't want to harm anyone's vision, but I really can't granularly predict what topics will bother people this way. I talk about nerdy stuff. I'm a nerd. That's not for everyone, I get it.

I suggest using the unfollow button if your eyes are strained by technical discussions. But also, see a qualified ophthalmologist. It may be a sign of something more serious.

@mattblaze I think Content Warnings can play an important role in making things better for some folks, and it’s a great feature of Mastodon. But folks who demand it for frivolous reasons devalue it for others, and “I find that topic boring” is definitely a frivolous reason.

Neil Gaiman's answer on Tumblr to a fan question which character in the Good Omens series he would have wanted to play if he had gotten the chance:

"I play all of them when I write them."

For me, that is one of the treats of being a writer. 😊 You can play any character in your mind, no matter how you look like, no matter what your gender, ethnicity, social status, sexual orientation is, your personal moral compass, world views and so on.
