@losttourist Therein lies the problem - it needed to be a profitable, or at least, sustainable business. And for that, you need customers. I think all the abuse was the main cause of the closure, but the lack of viability was the killing blow.

As mad as I get at @NPRpolitics every f-ing day, I never get mad a them for the 2 minutes of spoken ads they do every 15 minutes. They are always simple mentions of sponsors, and make large revenues for them. There is absolutely no reason why fediverse servers cannot be supported with similar models. Again, I have no problem with ads. I have a problem with ads deciding what I see in my social media streams via secretive proprietary algorithms.

It’s very interesting to see who in the fediverse is falling in line behind Silicon Valley and Big Tech and who is not.

And no, we can’t all just get along.

Big Tech is the antithesis of the cooperative and humanitarian values of federation and decentralisation. You can either be an apologist for surveillance capitalists or support the nascent ethical alternatives to their toxic business model that’s detrimental to human rights and democracy.

Pick a side. History will remember your choice.

The idea that LLM fiction could suffice for entertainment or that LLM written news articles (which would require much more guidance than the fiction, assuming we want to produce, well, mostly true news) could make do for your daily check in on what’s happening in the world— is disturbing since it assumes nothing will ever be created or happen that goes beyond the basic established categories for stories as we know them. It’s fundamentally conservative.
