Avi is me in a hat and a short-sleeved flamingo-print button-up in a parking lot. I am mixed and 29 in the picture (30 now).

Background is a blooming palo verde bearing pendulous boughs laden with yellow blossoms almost completely obscuring the thin, skin-like green bark.

@Tbsa law & order in 8 steps;

Step 1: delay case with legal spam
Step 2: use the legal buildup you made to justify delaying every case (dealing with them all at once would be UNFAIR)
Step 3: run for office
Step 4: use fact you're running for office to delay.
Step 5: explain trials by saying doj politically targeting you for being "the peoples oligarch"
Step 6: say you'll pardon allies and punish anyone who "comes after" you
Step 7: say witness tampering 1st amendment
Step 8: repeat

cykonot,
@cykonot@mas.to avatar

@Tbsa Republicans make circular dialogues, where they respond to each argument with a new falsehood, the debunking of which eventually leads back to their initial lie. This creates the illusion of a reasonable disagreement, while preventing any resolution and -- critically -- allowing them to control the framing / narrative.

A gish-gallop which feeds into itself, fracturing reality and debasing objective facts as if they were simply opinions. "Race realists" "climate skeptics" etc

cykonot,
@cykonot@mas.to avatar

@Tbsa they create a sort of semantic tautology, obfuscating the internal contradictions with a bigoted flattery few can resist.

The world is complicated. Justice does not always feel good. You must break their framing in order to break the cycle. Ridicule their myopia and force the conversation back to reality. Resist capitalist morality and the prosperity gospel they inevitably return to.

    My biggest problem with #capitalism is that it forces everyone to make earning money their primary objective.

    Not to provide valuable services for society.
    Not to make sure that people don't suffer.
    Not to preserve our environment.

    All these things are just optional side effects to the main objective of making money, and will be easily discarded if doing the opposite turns out to be more lucrative.

    cykonot,
    @cykonot@mas.to avatar

    @ainmosni the belief that capitalism is fair leads to a sort of economic moralism, where people internalize the capitalist reward structure and allow it to supplant social morals / goals with personal finance. Wealthy people are revered as virtuous and assumed to work harder / be superior to those struggling proles. This is not, of course, an inevitable conclusion which people draw, but rather the result of bootstrap propaganda meant to justify inequity. Moral decay & social breakdown results.

    If you see "parental rights" or "parents' rights" in the context of the autonomy and medical and social welfare of a child within the federal jurisdiction of Canada, it may interest you to note that that concept is fairly antithetical to the established legal approach (as imperfect as it often is). According to practice here — as far as I understand it, based on conversations with lawyers and social workers — the welfare of the child comes first and foremost, and the concept of parental rights is not really a thing, but in the eyes of the courts and the law should be framed rather as parental responsibility. Parents don't have the right to do whatever they want with their children. Parents have the responsibility to the welfare and wellbeing of their children.

    "Parents rights" is a gender critical, queerphobic, and ableist dogwhistle. Be on guard when you see it.

    cykonot,
    @cykonot@mas.to avatar

    @gersande the "parents rights" movement dehumanizes actual living young persons. It treats them like dolls, to be toyed with at their parents whims. It implicitly supports ALL child abuse, but is currently focused on forced detransitioning (incidentally taking away some parents rights) and conversion therapy. Not only that, the current push to legalize child labor is intimately wrapped up in it, as they would like to be able to fully control their child-laborers finances etc

    You will get a choice between 5 universes that each have a similar collection of languages though technology & culture may be very, possibly hazardously, different.

    To make your choice you may request one (1) kind of typical artifact. This will be fetched from each universe, you may compare to make your choice.
