What will be the tangible difference between the BGS that is making for AT protocol and a really well-connected relay operated with ?

The more I think about it, the more I don’t know.

darnell,
@darnell@one.darnell.one avatar

@atomicpoet Is it me, or does appear unnecessarily complex‽ At least for the foundational aspect of what is trying to do‽ might not be advanced, but it’s simple enough for the average non-tech person to understand (even if they do not understand the “how” of the ).

https://fedidb.org is no longer including pawoo due to reports of CP.

I should clarify inclusion rules add a "News" section for situations like this, and update the stats logic to recalculate stats without the removed instances.

I feel like a resource like this should include instances regardless of reputation except in situations where they break the law.

Wdyt? How should we handle this, and what other inclusion rules would you like to see?

Boosts greatly appreciated!

darnell,
@darnell@one.darnell.one avatar

@dansup I know Pawoo does remove CP posts as compelled by law (they are hosted in 🇯🇵), but their moderation team might be overwhelmed right now.

I talked to their current owner @Sujiyan last year over Zoom: https://darnell.day/zooming-with-pawoo-net-new-owner-suji-yan

I know https://Fediverse.Observer & https://Instances.Social still list Pawoo on their stat sites.

What is needed for large & hyperactive instances is an automated tool that automatically takes CP posts down (I know https://Counter.Social has this tech).

My theory.... :donaldtrump: is upset that he wasn't invited to the Coronation. He went over there to "visit" his clubs but imo he was there hanging around to try to wrangle and invitation. He is just that tacky.
No US President have ever attended a Coronation. We did have a war to be Independent. And if we are losing support it's because of :donaldtrump: and his trash can MAGAt's. Just saying.......

is finally testing federation with "allow-listed servers".

They're finally taking the step of decentralization.

Many people will naysay this. But it's absolutely better that they move to decentralization than not do it.

@hankg @atomicpoet What shocks me most about is the fact that moderation tools were more or less an afterthought. Even the most basic social networks have moderation tools to handle spam & trolls.

atomicpoet, to fediversenews
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

Here's the problem.

Recent growth on mastodon.social is greater than the growth rate of November 2022.

But growth on other servers, like mstdn.social, has flatlined.

This has been confirmed to me by numerous Mastodon server admins.

Very concerning!

@fediversenews

Growth of mstdn.social

darnell,
@darnell@one.darnell.one avatar

@atomicpoet @oblomov One simple solution to this that maybe @Gargron could consider: have the app cycle through numerous different instances (say 100) as the default sign up instead of just @Mastodon.

This would make on boarding easy for the user as well as promo decentralization at the same time. Of course, the other admins would have to agree to receiving a lot of traffic.

Plus it would be helpful if those instances had “mastodon” in their name to avoid confusing new users.

seachanger, (edited ) to random

the content has shifted from giddy shitposting to more serious questions about moderation. Still a lot of masto ignorance. a lot of folks are thirsty for clout and some are willing to throw the fediverse under the bus to get it.
Precious little talk about Dorsey or his status as the billionaire who handed the keys to Elon. I think folks want to get those invite codes, so no one’s biting the hand that feeds them. That’s my report lol

@seachanger I do not see the appeal for as it’s functionality is lacks even the most basic functionality (like moderation for instance!).

Brydge, the once-thriving startup making excellent iPad keyboards, is ceasing operations. I spoke to nearly a dozen former Brydge employees about what happened. Many of them are still owed 6 weeks of salary.

Former Brydge employees attribute the company’s failure to mismanagement and hostile leadership by its two CEOs, high turnover rates, and a lack of financial transparency.

It's a long one, but I hope you read it and enjoy it.

@ChanceHMiller That is awful! I bought a keyboard from them & used it a lot, but I eventually switched to ’s Magic Keyboard as the trackpad felt more natural.

Nowadays, you can pick up an inexpensive iPad keyboard for under $100 so it is a shame to see them go under.

Here's a feature comparison of Calckey and Mastodon.

This handy chart not only compares Calckey with Mastodon, but all the well-known Fediverse microblogging software with each other.

But a chart can only tell you so much. If you really want to know what makes Calckey different from Mastodon, you have to try it.

If you want to know more about Calckey, visit this site:

darnell,
@darnell@one.darnell.one avatar

@atomicpoet Huh‽ & have search.

Misskey turns their off by default (you can easily turn it on within settings) & Mastodon requires you to implement the code on your instance. I use search on both of my solo instances.

Misskey does not have an official app, but replicates most (if not all) of the options on the web interface (something most official apps on other platforms can not do yet).

darnell,
@darnell@one.darnell.one avatar

@DuncanWatson @atomicpoet Yeah, you have to enable within : https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/optional/elasticsearch/

darnell,
@darnell@one.darnell.one avatar

@fediversereport Very interesting article about @owncast & @gabek!

Yeah, streaming content to the masses can be complex & costly, depending on your setup as well as your audience. I think this is where centralized services excel at compared to decentralized ones.

Even (which I am a fan of) is iffy at this. But I do believe the decentralized streaming services can reach regions that are often overlooked or restricted (like 🇨🇳) which is why they are necessary.

darnell,
@darnell@one.darnell.one avatar

@owncast @fediversereport @gabek Can Owncast handle streaming to hundreds or thousands of people simultaneously‽ Or conduct multiple people in a video streaming to thousands of viewers online‽ Or tens of thousands across multiple devices & apps‽ (web, iPhone, Android, iPad, etcetera).

I ask as there is a need for an affordable decentralized solution for this, & all of the options are pricy for most people.

This doesn't really answer the question *, sure clients will have various monetization models (though WTH is transactions). The issue is what is the server/Bluesky PBLLC business model?

If you run a fediverse instance (Mastodon, Pixelfed, Calckey and others), would you ban a Meta instance?
