I tend to caption my images, but I voted for 'Not enough time' as sometimes you just want to post something right in that moment.

Also: as stupid and non-inclusive as it is, I think some jokes are so much funnier when there is no 'bottom text' to rely on for an explanation of the joke.

the funniest thing about Apple is the last version of MacOS features "video reactions" where if your camera sees you do a thumbs up or heart symbol with your hands, stuff happens behind you like fireworks in ANY video app you are using BY DEFAULT.

A friend was in an online therapy session, describing his trauma so the therapist asked if he was alright and he did a thumbs up and then HUGE FIREWORKS BEHIND HIS HEAD.

It's so bad that online therapy sessions now start with a warning dialog!

Oh, the reason I have closed signups by default on PeerTube.TV is because PT and it's content is kinda super expensive to host :catblush:

Since videos get converted into multiple formats to support all kinds of internet speeds it does take up quite some space

Ofc I'll open signups on request so a DM or whatever will do but I wanted to clarify :ablobwink:

(Masto has a lot less space-per-user so to say so a lot cheaper to host for a larger group)

Hello I have had a week of weird disasters that make me sound like a total liar when I try to reschedule calls or ask for extensions on deadlines…

Non-exhaustive list:

  • stuck in the one lane within an entire highway that got closed in Chicago, car didn’t move an inch for 2 hours
  • lamp in living room of my mother’s house exploded in front of us the first day here
  • immediately after, got a hefty splash of dish soap straight in my eye
  • got my sister from school today and got stung by a wasp

    Right now, I am in Boston for a conference and I definitely don't feel good enough.

    I'm a speaker, and this event should be a wonderful moment of celebration. Except, I spent most of my first day here crying. I cried in the conference bathroom, I cried by the front entrance, I cried in my Lyft when leaving early, I cried in my hotel room, I cried at the Harvard Book Store, and I cried at the ramen shop a block over.

    @mariyadelano Thank you for putting pen to paper and sharing this with the outer world. It's terrifying but (in my experience) ultimately relieving to finally find the words to express what your feelings actually are when they've been buried so deep down for so long.

    I think one of life's lessons is realizing that it's okay for things to sometimes just not be okay. It's what makes us human, regardless of 'the pile of bags in the corner' as you described it. 💖

    It was a lot of work even though most of the work was already done.

    Nickelodeon US was the first to rebrand as that's what all of this was designed for in the first place. Then Nickelodeon Italy followed on July 3rd.

    I'll let you in on a little secret: Nick Italy sits one desk away from me at work.
    My colleagues there did the bulk of translating U.S. assets (60p/30i Full HD or 4K) to 'rest of the world' standards (50p/25i) and testing technical functionality on our playout systems.

    When they had successfully rebranded in early July I basically picked up their work, copied it to the UK environment and tweaked the timings of graphics to match what the UK was already doing.

    Then I built and played a 6 hour playlist on a test playout server mimicking the Nick UK playout chain to see if things worked as intended. After some more tweaking by playout software developers everything was soon ready to go on the graphics side of things.

    The bulk of the work was in updating our "navigation": the little idents between shows telling you what's coming up after the break.

    Nick UK loves them. They exist in a bunch of variations based on what's happening around a break -- is more of the same show next? Something else? Is it a premiere or a rerun? And so on.

    We don't often place these by hand, our scheduling software does it for us. But someone has to tell the software what to do. For every scenario possible.

    We use a lookup table in our scheduling software to automate navigation. The logic is something like:

    If [current show] = SpongeBob & [next show] = SpongeBob ==> place 'more SpongeBob after the break'

    If [current show] = SpongeBob & [next show] = The Thundermans ==> place 'Thundermans next'

    ...and so on for every possible form of navigation for every show we currently air on the channel.

    You can imagine: it's a pretty long table.
