Have something you’ve made in Python you want to talk about? Or something cool you’ve done that Python helped enable? Is there a feature or library that deserves a little more attention?

Then you should submit a talk about how Python intersects your world! And if you’ve never given a talk before, that’s even better! PyOhio loves welcoming first time speakers!

I'm finding it a little hard to work today with this in my head.

Antarctic ice extent is now 6.4 standard deviations below the mean. That is, I'm reliably told, a one in 13 billion year event.

We're about to see a lot of shit hit a lot of fans. And we are far from ready.

Business as usual is over. Politics as usual is over. We need to be putting our effort into building systems that can help us survive what greed and power and wilful blindness have wrought.

If you want to do your part
and take a stand against Meta’s new social media Threads coming up to connect with Mastodon possibly from July 6th :facebook::nes_fire::mastodon: :

Admins 🏠✨
If you are a Fediverse instance admin, you can:

  1. Block all instances controlled by Meta before it joins us ⛔️

  2. Sign the : https://freefediverse.org/index.php/FediPact 🖊️

  3. Make a public statement explaining that you will block Meta’s instance(s) and why 📢

Users 👤:heart_cyber:
If you are a user, you can:

  1. Pre-block instances controlled my Meta: https://infosec.exchange/@Em0nM4stodon/110634873221532366 ⛔️

  2. Make a statement about why you are blocking Meta 📢

  3. Move your account to another instance that has pledged to block Meta if you are not comfortable with your current instance:

3.1. Instances that have signed the Pact: https://kbin.social/m/FediPact/t/119000/Instances-that-have-signed-the-FediPact

3.2. How to move your account: https://controlaltdelete.technology/articles/the-mastodons-guide-to-the-fediverse.html#11-1-migrating 🚀

  1. Restrict the visibility of your account: https://controlaltdelete.technology/articles/the-mastodons-guide-to-the-fediverse.html#4-3-visibility 🔒

Be aware that blocking Threads might not alone protect your data from reaching Meta’s servers.

However, it is a great way to take a stand against surveillance capitalism, and the more people do it, the least impact Meta will have on the Fediverse :flan_sign::geodesic:

If everyone did this together,
they would have no power over us ✊🐘✨

Since I keep seeing developers use ‘pretty’ IP addresses like ’1.2.3.4’ in example configurations; a reminder that you MUST NOT use publicly routable addresses that you do not control in your code.

Instead, use one of the available 'TEST-NET' IPv4 or IPv6 ranges documented in RFC 6890;

192.0.2.0/24
198.51.100.0/24
203.0.113.0/24

❌ 1.2.3.4
✅ 192.0.2.4

and for IPv6;

✅ 2001:db8::/32

Pass it on to all of your fellow developers, documentation writers, and so forth.

Full RFC for special purpose addresses;

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/rfc6890/

Reserved for documentation, IPv4 and IPv6;

HOW TO SPOT A DEEP FAKE:

  1. You can't.

Don't think you can. You can spot clumsy ones, but you've already missed a dozen others. We're past the stage where even expert practitioners can have a 100% success rate.

Instead, think about how to avoid taking action, or trusting someone, because of who they seem to be. Holding onto the fantasy that "I can spot 'em!" is harmful, and moves the onus of responsibility from collective to personal.

This is also true for , of course.

datetime.utcnow and datetime.utcfromtimestamp will be deprecated in 3.12: https://github.com/python/cpython/issues/103857

If you maintain a package, now is probably a good time to grep your source code for utcnow and utcfromtimestamp to get out ahead of the deprecation warnings. 📅🕐

Fucking Christ the @protocol is the most obtuse crock of shit I've ever looked at. It is complex solely for the sake of being complex and still suffers from all of the same problems as Mastodon.

Your server goes down? Sorry, all of your followers are lost. Account portability is no better than Mastodon. 'DIDs' serve literally no purpose. And none of the API code that Bluesky uses in their own app validates ANY of the crypto they're doing on the server. NONE OF IT.
